Just from the rule overview it seems like a lot of the mechanics are chance mitigation. You build buildings to role more dice. You do objectives to have a better chance at the end. It seems like so much of this revolves around dice rolling. It doesn’t take much skill to say, “o there’s 4 cards here. Better go there next.” I do love the story aspect and art, but think I would be board with this as I don’t feel like I would have much control over the results of each game.
@Flangad

the game run very fast, you have very few turns to reach your objectives.... so yes, there is a significant part of luck, because it's a familly game, not expert, but choosing the right actions that will allow you to win the chronicle seams to be a real challenge... and this is just about thinking/optimize/anticipae!

I got into a game and I felt it took a very long time to complete a tutorial 4 player chronicle for what it offers. I had similar thoughts to Zee where turns didn't feel like you were doing much because if you move at all, your turn is literally just to move. I'm actually quite surprised by the high ratings despite those concerns.

listening Antoine Bauza (the author), the game is designed mainly as a puzzle, suported by the narative items.... not a narrative game suported by a puzzle mecanism. But there will be many narrative addons in the future (new chronicles...). Maybe if you place only 2 incident card per village (instead of 3) at the begining of the game, the puzzle can become much easier, so you can feel free to play "as you wish", and less "as the game want you to play", so you feel more like in an RPG, and can focus on the narrative or building aspects of the game...but this is clearly not the way the game was made for.
@Ariranhaa

I played this game at Essen Spiel and it got me intrigued as it does look pretty. The player turns are very quick and I liked this fast paced dynamism, although I felt this was always interrupted by the constant dice throwing (throw dice to see how the story advance, throw dice to see where each card (problem, event, ..) are placed, ...). This felt to me as more burdensome than anything else while I really only wanted to jump on to the next action and keep the momentum of the players turn and the resolve of our actions to a maximum. Because of this I felt the action was interrupted and although your turn plays fast, the game probably lasts too long in general. The components are nice and I do understand that the Fire tokens represent fuel but I thought this was really mismatched as you're trying to fight against unrest and stuff like that, and the fire tokens always made me think everything was on fire! So yeah, I would have chosen another iconography for this.There were some other small things like that that I found strange and diminished the entire game in my opinion. Also, as mentioned in your review I'm really scared for replayability (especially at the price that it's coming out and not clear to me how much and at what cost other stories will be injected for this game). I do think this game had some good potential but something is amiss. This being said, different gamers like different games. Maybe you'll like it but for me it was an easy pass.
@Ariranhaa
5 ай бұрын
I've been playing it and liking it a lot! However, I also do think that our turns end very fast, our actions happen very fast, we don't have time to "savor" them because it's time to roll the main die again. I wish the adventures were longer, for example with resisted tests and more steps to be solved, and we could actually take our time to do more stuff. The provisions actually help a little (one free action), but i still think we do too little at a time.

The “puzzle” aspect has sold me. There are other game like Wonderbook and Tales Of Evil that look awesome but, imho, also look even more story driven, read&react, and pretty much NO puzzle aspect. All that said, how does this game compare to those 2 games? I passed on both, despite how cool they “look”. Oltree looks waaay more like a “game” than those others, with a puzzley vibe completely missing in those other 2 I mentioned.

I think folks need to start considering doing the Radho thing. Stop looking for a score here. Listen to what the folks have to say and then make your own decision if it helps you. Scores are irrelevant and I seldom agree. Folks complaining of scores need to watch more DT content. Chris and his wife have done numerous reviews and are pretty strict with their scoring. Even if I don't like a game Chris likes, I know he scores them for what they are, not what he wants them to be.

Worried that the game will feel like Elditch Horrory running out of story content and starting to repeat way too fast without some mandatory expansion. This is like Ghost Stories / Last Bastion with a more friendly look and light RPG feel. "I'm barely doung anything if I move" is true to both, but that's what make your decision meaningful, while you present it as if your action feels nonimportant. Would've loved to hear your thoughts comparing Oltréé to both because it feels like Bauza keeps remaking the "same" game, but always evolved, upgraded, twisted in a new smart way, and would've been nice if you guys approach this from that perspective.
@Ariranhaa

If you think of it more like a puzzle supported by narrative (as someone here pointed out), the lack of story arcs end up being not that important. Nonetheless, an expansion was already made and another one is in the oven, both with more chronicles and adventures.

Man, the name of this is driving me insane. In French, words with "ee" have ONE accent - musée, matinée, soirée - so what's going on with that nonsensical extra accent?
