My garage floor is cold. I bought several packs of halfords foam floor tiles and cut/fit them into place. Work brilliantly, not expensive at all and you can stand on them in bare feet and still have some warmth, plus they are easy to keep clean and if they get damaged can be cheaply replaced as they are click fit.

A bit late... With the roller door. Make a plywood "screen" to lay against the door when you are working in the colder months. It works like double glazing. The heat will stay in the wood rather than being absorbed by the cold metal door. Have a play with cheap ply from shipping crates. Your work bench. Source old conveyor belt. It is about 1/2 " thick. Not too hard to cut and is super tough. I actually cut it wider than the bench and made a 6" splash back as well. It is heavy enough to stay in place and tough as nails. Your cold floor. Again rubber mats. I found some woven mats made out of car tyres. But there are some others called Rhino mats. They are inexpensive and help reduce fatigue from standing on concrete. Good luck . I love your workshop.

Useful stuff! I built my dream garage last year and this would have been welcome info. I have used stainless steel food preparation tables for my work spaces, and they work really well. Also picked up some cast-off oak kitchen cabinets for cheap because oak is now so out of fashion for kitchens.

Excellent video as always Neil! Love the honesty in it, all good tips for others. My own roller garage door is single skin too, note you can get insulated roller doors too, so you won't have space reduced. I'd highly recommend the foam tiles for a cheap, comfortable option. It also helps massively with the insulation!

Frame around the garage door and sheet it with osb. Build two barn style doors that open internally. That will keep the heat in and not take up a great amount of space. Bonus of that is it will allow storage above the garage door.

You put windows in the weirdest places. Places where cabinets and storage could have gone. Would have taken the insulation money and bought a log fire place made of iron or something, put that in a corner with the small round chimney pipe coming out the roof, nothing fancy, 400 tops. Toasty af in there it would be. Anyways, what's with the window?

Why not just to something practical but perhaps not very elegant for the door and have a heavyweight "curtain". Lots cheaper. Solid wood worktops and a "splashback" that you can sand down or stainless would be far more practical for worksurfaces in a workshop. Foam granules in the concrete would have made a significant difference. No need to get a 3dr party/specialist to pour it. Garages never, never, have enough storage. What about all that space above the windows? Every wall should be covered in shelves or hook/tool boards.

Loved the series. I'm in the same boat as you, hopefully moving to a house with a huge back garden where I'm planning on building a garage and workshop. I'm also planning on a two post lift. You have answered a lot of questions I was wondering about, especially with regard to planning and cost. I've been lusting after a wooden garage, but was worried that it wouldn't be sturdy enough or that it would require too much maintenance, BUT after hearing the cost of brick I'm definitely going with wood. Thank you so much for posting all this.

@@RoadandRacetv I've seen garages have their doors open in the winter, but with a big plastic insulation sheet there instead of a door that attaches to the walls and top and bottom. Don't know how that's easier than just closing the doors, but hopefully there's something you could put behind the door to keep warm while you're working inside. Of course, that wouldn't help if you need the door open to move cars in and out...

How about an air curtain? You don’t necessarily have to heat the whole room if you heat the air immediately in front of the door. Also the floor isn’t colder than the rest of the room it just ‘sucks’ the temperature away faster. This could be reduced with some rubber matting.
