It's actually really cool the video doesn't touch on Floyd or 2112 at all. It shows that his tastes are not only completely different but has grown up with a different musical foundation. Now I'm going to have some cool albums to check out. (Incoming Rant) Also in terms of PF; I don't know what qualifies someone as an expert in their music, but I've listened to every album between DSotM -> Division Bell start to finish at least 200 times apiece and in the thousands for some. I would absolutely say that The Wall was their most "conceptual" of the albums in that span, although personally it and WYWH are my least favorites due to radio overplay. My Dad and I've talked about it many, many, MANY times. He stands by that Echos is his favorite and I will forever die on the hill that Division Bell is the best album Floyd ever made. (For those who don't know it's an extremely unpopular opinion because Waters wasn't on it, and most of the lyrics were written with the help of Gilmore's wife). After DB comes Radio Kaos (Written by Waters after he left the band). Those are the 2 albums that imo show best who: Richard Wright, Roger Waters, David Gilmore, and Nick Mason were as artists. Also, fuck radio stations that play Wish You Were Here. That song contains too much of the Æther to be played nonchillantly during a workday. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Damn, this comment made me nostalgic. When I was a kid I was groomed online by this man in his 30’s. He listened to a lot of Genesis, their work was something he was obsessed with. He made me listen to a lot of their stuff. (I wanted his attention so I complied. I wasn’t mature enough to appreciate any of their music at the time.) I’m okay now of course, but reading that title brought back so many details. So many memories. Any time Genesis in general is mentioned I just get sad. I know their work is considered amazing by many and I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to separate them from him in my brain. I’m afraid to listen.

Green Day also have 21st Century Breakdown and their trilogy (editing the latter into a double album gives you a 4, close to a five - you have a pretty strong narrative). You expressed your views very well, but it's worth mentioning that a story needn't always be told in a linear or chronological fashion, nor do it's "chapters" need to flow perfectly one into the other. I would argue that the future of the concept album lies in allowing instinct to dictate where certain "chapters" lie within the overarching story, even if it doesn't make logical narrative sense at the time. Life doesn't always seem logical, even if a certain degree of logic reveals itself in retrospect. Kid A is a great template for what the concept album can be: a speculative fiction with allegorical undertones told via a series of perfectly executed musical vignettes that stand both on their own as individual pieces as well as fragments of a larger idea.

Alright now here’s my important question to you: Does a concept need to be communicated through lyrics? I’ve heard many albums that tell a story independent from the lyrics of the song, due to the production of it throughout. I’ve also heard albums with 0 lyrics throughout, but they still tell a story if you pay enough attention. Do they count as concept albums? Edit: I know you can’t go too in depth with communication through non-lyrical music, but could it at least get a 2 on the scale do you think? Like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons takes you through the different aspects and emotions of the different seasons. What would you think about that?

One concept album you might like is Deloused in the Comatorium by The Mars Volta. It tells the story of a man named Cerpin Taxt as he try’s to commit suicide with rat poison and fails and he suddenly transports into this alternate dream reality because of the coma he’s in. It explores themes of depression and suicide and it was actually based on a friend that Cedric and Omar, the singer and guitarist of the band, knew who committed suicide. The lyrics are a bit cryptic, but the music is seriously some of the best stuff with Rick Rubin as producer and Flea of RHCP playing bass on the album. Seriously tho, I only heard this album last year and it instantly became one of my favorite albums of all time, that’s how good this is.

My top pick for a 5 is an album called ''Everywhere At The End Of Time'' by the caretaker. Without the rest of the album some tracks just sound like a garbled mess of distorted oldies music but when you take all six and a half hours of the album and put it together you get a story like no other. The album is a story about someone with dementia as he progresses through the disease until he meets his fate. All the tracks line up and lead perfectly into the other to create the journey, and the last track, those last 6 minutes are extremely emotional when you get the context and listen to the whole thing.

I know this is 5 years old now, but I just found it and please, please, please tell me you have at least tried The Wall...even if Pink Floyd ain't your jam it is as perfect a 5 as I've ever heard. For one of my favorite bands, Jethro Tull, I'd put Aqualung in the 2nd tier as it's basically a collection of songs about the underpriviledged and then a collection of songs about religion. Thick As A Brick is probably a 3rd tier because it has a "concept" (being a poem written by an 8 year old boy and set to music by the band) but doesn't tell a story. Passion Play is at least a 4, maybe even 5, since it was designed to function like a play with characters and a story with beginning middle and end, even committing to the "play" narrative with a silly "intermission" piece (the hare who lost his spectacles) so you can go pee and get more popcorn.

Tool - Lateralus, Porcupine Tree - In Absentia and Karnivool - Sound Awake (double concept really as it's a continuation of Themata which came a few years before it) are the greatest examples of concept albums in modern prog metal. It's amazing.

Fear Factory - Obsolete. It’s a concept album with written scenes for each song that tell a story. Whats even cooler is it’s a concept album that’s part of even a larger concept story with two other albums.

Funny idea I had while watching is that Let It Be could technically be a stage 4 concept album. It could definitely be argued against due to the Beatles making the songs in its 'movie,' but I think the songs are what make the Let It Be film and Get Back documentary.

I want to share my examples of two concept albums: Crybaby by Melanie Martinez and A Thousand Suns by Linkin Park, probably not on 3, but I think close to 5 on the spectrum. Also there is a whole Russian folk-punk rock band whose most songs tell a medieval story, but I didn't listen to them in order, so not quite sure(Korol I Shut)

Susurjbfuf I went into this wondering if you’d ever heard of Mariana’s Trench and then when they eventually pop up had me smiling so much!! They’re my favorite as well and all of their discography means so much to me, and I most admire the artistry and heart they absolutely put into all of it. Astoria has been where I’ve spent most of my recent time, but I always nerd out about how they approached ever after and its listening experience. And also how listening to the entire discography beginning to end is the absolute most amazing experience.

I love Damn. By Kendrick Lamar As a concept album because it tells a completely different story when you reverse the track order but the whole concept of wickedness or weakness flows perfectly in the album

Level 6: it's a concept album that tells a perfect level 5. But. If you listen to the songs in reverse order, they also tell a cohesive story that is different. the next album is a continuation of the first album, and listening to those songs backwards gives yet another story. Listening to both albums in reverse order together gives another story, and listening to album 2 in normal order then album 1 in normal order gives yet. Another. story. Bonus points if there are multiple interpretations for each story. Anyway, have you figured out which albums I'm talking about yet? I won't spoil it so good luck 🫡

If you like concept albums, you NEED, I repeat, NEED to check out the band Coheed and Cambria if you haven't already. Not only are they the millennial version of RUSH, 9 of their albums 10 are CONNECTED sci-fi stories. If you talked about any of those, you'd have to talk about them as a whole, so on the spectrum, they would be a 7. The consept is so ingrained in the band that they have comics for the orginal story, and Coheed and Cambria are literally the name of the original main characters. The first 4 albums are literally one big story, the 5th is a prequel of that original story, the 6th and 7th are a double album and are another prequel but WAY before the rest happen The 8th is the one without the consept but there's a little sprinkle of consept in the middle And the 9th and 10th are a sequel way after everything else happens, and its a confirmed pentalogy, so we still got at least 3 more amazing albums left. This band is literally incapable of making bad music, and their discography is so broad that there's something for everyone with any good taste in music. This band mean the world to me, so I try to get as many people as I can to acknowledge them because they are the most underrated band EVER. (I've accidentally spent half an hour writing and editing this comment because this band has changed my life for the better)

This was a kid trying to cover adult subjects. He had a narrow selection of music relevant to a time period when concept albums aren't really used and didnt even touch music from when the concept album was at its prime. The approach was well meaning but I think you need to spend time listening to music, get outside your box explore some other peoples lists and listen to that music.....Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Moody Blues, Rush, Yes, King Crimson, Smashing Pumpkins, Genesis.... and show tunes and soundtracks is not concept album material either so I wouldnt include it, it's a different style of writing.

The Decemberists Picaresque album is a good 3. Each song is kind of as if its part of “some” theatrical piece. Not really connected but a great “hey what if we did this concept”. The album covers adds a lot to this, IMO. Their album The Hazards of Love is a full story throughout the music, Id say 4.5.

Good Kid, Maad City by Kendrick is a movie. It’s gotta be up there for one of the best of all time. Solid list though. I lived in Portland and went to Astoria often. It’s ironic they filmed that music video for “Astoria” at Cannon Beach (not in Astoria) because in The Goonies (set and filmed in Astoria) they used that Haystack Rock from Cann Beach in their film, too which is also ironic cuz again- not in Astoria lmao.

Ever since I heard the term concept album I've been obsessed with them. Now I'm really exited to apply this concept spectrum to my favourite albums! I'm pretty sure most of the albums I listen to would be in the 2-3 range but I'm certain of one album that's definitely a 5, that being Dead Beat by Rufus Rex. Without spoiling too much, It's about someone who tries to bring back the dead. Rex also plays with the POV a fair bit, with my favourite song being from the perspective of who is dead being resurrected and its horrifying if you think about the lyrics for too long. If you've heard of Creature Feature's music, Rufus Rex is literally just Creature Feature but a bit more rock to it (also cooler imo) Shame the only Rex album done (so far) was this one.

Surprised to see no mention of Muse in the comments here, all of their albums are concepts, although whether they're 3s or 5s really varies from album to album. If you're into heavier stuff, Mastodon albums are pretty much all 5s!

i have a concept album idea based around my personal experiences: namely all of the crushes i've had on celebrities and fictional characters and the ways each are unique. it's chronological, starting from the intense feelings of my first crush and following me throughout, ending on me coming down to reality and realizing my loneliness. i thought it was a 3 at first, but i think it's more of a 5 now...

I'll give some of these a listen, apart from The Dear Hunter, which I would give like a 4.8 because I don't know how many points to dock for spreading it out like they do (I almost put it the vid, because I love that series, but thought it might further complicate things), I don't think I've listened to any of these front to back-- some of them I haven't even heard of, but I'll report back! thanks for the suggestion!
