Wally, I can't say enough about the support you have built up. It is clear that you have helped a lot of people with their craft. Playing the saxophone "perfectly" is a quest that none of us will achieve, but none the less you are making the journey so much more enjoyable. A very wise man once told me that if I am having a bad day, go try to find someone to help. Then he went on to say that if you help out people before you have a bad day, your bad days will start to disappear. You clearly are living that nugget of wisdom. Well done.

Hello Dr. Wally, after a 7 weeks odyssey from the US to Germany via Qatar and Greece I now have it finally in my hands. I am playing a Vandoren V16 A7 with 2.5 reeds and I was very happy with this setup. I ordered the WCW without really needing it nor with too high expectations. But as a fan of your videos (which I consider as remarkable treasures - I appreciate your sense of humor) you made me curious. And I am more than surprised. I can confirm what most of the other customers said, it plays well in all registers. But what it makes it even more interesting is a much better dynamic play. Even with soft and quiet blowing, I can produce a much clearer and stable tone compared to my other mouthpieces. I am still a beginner, a pro would maybe not consider this as important, but for me it increases joy and motivation a lot. Thanks for all. I can’t wait to showing it to my teacher. Regards, Norbert
@drwallysax
3 жыл бұрын
That's fantastic Norbert!! What you're experiencing, even as a beginner is the "ease" of play. The design balances resistance. Far too many modern pieces aim for "free blowing" which just doesn't feel great to me (preferring warmer, mid-century jazz). I'm so glad you're pleased! It's not a beginner, or pro mouthpiece - it's just a great mouthpiece. I'm so thrilled we were able to create something at such a great price. Thanks for the update, and happy practicing!

Dr. Wally, I met up with a friend yesterday who just purchased one of these mouthpieces. He let me take it for a test drive and I must say, I was very blown away by the quality of this mouthpiece and the incredible flexibility of it. I too love the west coast sound, Art Pepper and Bud Shank have been big influences on my playing. So this morning I ordered one of these mouthpieces for alto and I’m excited. Been playing on a long shank soloist the last couple of years and an old Meyer before that. This mouthpiece blows them out of the water! Cheers!

I received my 56 Mk II yesterday, and played it tonight for the first time. So far I'm loving it. You were on the money about the reed strength . . . a Boston Sax Shop 3 gave me a dry martini, and a Hemke 2.5 gave me something with a bit more punch. I'm not crazy about the WCW ring ligature (it doesn't slide down far enough past the shoulder for my preference), but a Vandoren MO worked well. Looking forward to getting to know it better!

Hey Dr Wally! My “56” arrived this morning - it is quite excellent. I’ve just finished playing for nearly 2 hours - normally my lip gives out after about 45 minutes. It really is quite amazing. I was a little unsure about ordering one from here in England because, as a relative beginner, my mouthpieces have a much smaller tip opening. However, it plays beautifully from top to bottom and much better than any of my other pieces - including a few vintage Brilharts. And such a lovely tone too. Just wanted to send a big Thank You Dr. Wally!!! I just received my 56 in the mail late last week, and couldn't be happier. I love the tone, which seems to easily play a mix of both louder/brighter, or darker/mellow depending on reed, breath and embouchure. But my favorite thing aside from the tone is that, I'm quite sure is due to the hand facing, that reeds that wouldn't seal/play well on my Claude Lakey sound fantastic on this piece, so I have a lot of experimenting to do. At this stage, all I'm hoping for is that the tenor version is coming sooner than later. :o)

I just received my mouthpiece, so I thought I’d give my opinion…….WOW!!!!!! I took it out the box, table was like glass, smooth and there were no imperfections. I put it on the horn and gave it a blow and I was AMAZED. The sound was incredible, full with a hint or dark (not at all bright or shrill). Plays great in all registers too. I had to compare it next to my JJ DV NY (I appreciate one is metal and the other is not), but I have to say, it played better! £80 vs £415 and the WCW won hands down! I take my hat off to you, I was very sceptical buying a cheaper 3D printer mouthpiece but you proved me wrong, truly is one of the best mouthpieces I have played. I just received the 56 alto Mk II in the mail today (.70 tip opening). I played it right away and... before I say anything else, a bit of context. I'm in my mid-50s and just picked up the saxophone about 9 months ago. After starting on a Yamaha 4C, I switched to a Vandoren AP3 mouthpiece and I've been using it for the last six months (playing about an hour a day). The AP3 is terrific, especially for a beginner, but it is definitely designed for classical playing. As much as I like the AP3, I'm at the point where I want to find a mouthpiece that will let me start me to explore a broader sound pallet and play with a bit more "oomph." I'm looking for a focused and somewhat dark sound but also want to be able to project when needed. At the same time, I need something that is easy for a newbie to play. Over the last few weeks, I've tried about 10 different mouthpieces. While they were all excellent products, none of them felt quite right. Many were too bright. Others were just too hard to play (even those in a size 5 tip opening). I was about to give up, but decided to give the 56 a try. It was literally the last one I was going to test drive. And now for the good news: I LOVE IT! It was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much for creating such an excellent mouthpiece--and one that is affordable. I look forward to many hours of playing on the Mk II and maybe one day giving the Select a try. 😁

Dr. Wally, love your KZitem channel, your master class and informative videos have helped me a lot.. I've already ordered my 56/0.80 Alto MP. If I like it, I'll ordered the other three... baritone, tenor, and soprano... What's attractive in these promotions, is the price. I'm very leery about what these modern mouth piece are going for. I've been playing the sax for over 50 years, on and off and remember paying under a hundred dollars for a good mouth piece in the 70's, now... 200.00 and better... some vintage going for over 500.00, and you don't even know if it's going to be right for you, and sold most of the time as a no return, so you'll need to pass it on, and sometimes at a lost... This mission Dr. Wally is on, could help many of the beginners and seasoned players like me, who don't gig anymore, who are living on a fix or budgeted income, and now will be able to afford a good playing, free blowing mouth piece at a price that will not break the bank... My concern now, is what opening to chose for my Mark VI Tenor MP, my baritone and Soprano... Yep, I play them all... and it ran me over 1,600.00 from another brand, with these MP's it's be under 500.00. Well, we'll see how well the MP will perform for me... Thanks Dr. Wally... Now to wait for the 2-3 weeks to receive the MP's.

I'm always pretty cautious on the topic on food safety in combination with 3D printing. The problem is not necessarily the material of the mouthpiece, but due to the nature of FDM printing little crevices form between the layers, giving bacteria a really good environment to grow. That's why I sold my Syos mouthpiece. The problem is, that there is no (at least I couldn't find any) specific research about the dangers regarding prolonged "in-mouth"-contact with such objects, although several articles advise against using 3d-printed objects for food related stuff. Edit: For the last point: A lot of articles talk about food contact, whereas we are dealing with direct mouth contact, hence I think it is reasonable to apply the same concerns.
@drwallysax
3 жыл бұрын
1st: There are not any "crevices" between the layers - it's a high resolution print. There are actually larger grooves in my hard rubber "hand made" mouthpieces where someone has filed the chamber and sidewalls. 2nd. The Canadian PLA they use is graded "food safe." I'm actually not sure, but is there a recommendation for the Hard Rubber, Tonalin or Ebolin to be used with food related stuff?

Hi Dr. Wally. This mouthpiece looks awesome, but it brings up a question, that I'm hoping you can answer... About 2 months ago i bought a beautiful, dent and ding free 1929 Conn new wonder II alto. Silver plated with gold plating in bell. Before buying it, i had no idea what a new wonder II (or chu-berry) even was. And now i own one.! And to make things even better, i got it for $100.!! It's in the shop currently getting a complete overhaul, and I'm excited to get it back and start playing it. But I've had a couple people tell me that those vintage horns need "large chamber" mouthpieces. And that they weren't designed to play with modern mouthpieces. Something about not being free- blowing like a modern horn, or something like that... So... is there any truth to this? And when i saw this video, i immediately thought that maybe this mouthpiece would be a good match for a 1929 Conn. Is this mouthpiece large chamber enough? I'll shut up now... but please, when you get a minute, let me know what you think about this mouthpiece you designed possibly being a good for my new-old sax. Thanks.

Hi Dr Wally, very nice mouthpiece, it's definitely going to be on my radar. I currently play a Vandoren AL4 (it's a little weird but I like it). I'm having trouble on my alto and I'm hoping you maybe can point me at the best place to fix it, I think it's my technique. On soprano, I can start on low Bb no issue, playing a 2.5 strength reed. On alto, regardless of the mouthpiece, even with a 2.0 reed I can barely hit low D and anything below that is iffy, B and Bb are basically impossible. I took the horn to get it looked at, and the tech made some adjustments and seemed to be able to play it well enough, but while it seemed better, I'm still struggling on the low end. It's almost as if I'm holding the octave key, but once I get above G everything seems happy again. Given all that, what am I doing wrong?
@drwallysax
3 жыл бұрын
Hi John! Sorry you're having alto problems! I hate to say it, but without being able to test your horn myself or see you play in person, I can't accurately say what the issue is! Embouchure tension is the usual culprit - but if you're having no problem on soprano - I'm assuming you are doing ok on alto? I'm sorry to not be more help, but I don't want to give you bad information having not actually seen you or your instrument! Good luck and please do keep me posted!

Do you still use the WCW 56 as your primary tenor mpc? I bought one and, whether me, the reed or the mpc, I couldn't get enough projection (power) out of it to be heard during un-mic'd big band solos, enough to overcome brass blaring behind me. I play in three local bands populated mostly by weekend warriors with music performance as a hobby. On a more positive note, I don't have this problem with the WCW 56 alto mouthpiece when playing lead alto in one of those three bands, nor do I have a problem being heard with the WCW soprano (no 56 available) mouthpiece. I even purchased a WCW clarinet mouthpiece with an 0.050 tip opening.
