Always been the guy to do diving, climbing, paragliding.and canoepolo as a hobby. In the end, i just want something between a naked bike and a cruiser for fun trips with friends who also started lessons / have their license recently. Maybe i just have my first bike tuned down till i can handle it fully unlocked (lessons on a yamaha XJ6). Love the triumph street triple & speed triple, phantom black shadow and vulcan s like bikes. Should probably just walk into a dealorship and get a sit or you guys (internet always has more suggestions then 1.. in the end to start riding 1 (2nd hand) bike is all you need (ok incl fuel and preferably ABS )

Overall, I am 110% glad I didn't start on a 250 or 300.
@evanfinch4987

One reason a higher-strung 600 like a CBR is a good first bike is you can yank the throttle back at low revs and you won't get huge power. It's a pretty deliberate decision to get the most out of the bike. I think if you've slid around in a few high-power (especially RWD) cars you have already been taught proper throttle management that translates easily to fast motorcycles.

Paulo Remigio In Germany you have to start on a 125cc with a restriction to 11kW or 15HP. This is the A1 License. A2 License allows you to ride bikes up to 48HP, which can almost be any bike with a CDI or throttle that doesn‘t let you go above that power. This doesn‘t apply on bikes that have more than 0,2kW per kilogram of bike weight. The A license is pure freedom.

I was the 650 starter guy. I bought a used Suzuki SV650 because it had more torque (hahaha), was faster off the line and had more top end than any 250 or 300 or even 500. It also looked like a real full sized motorcycle. It was hella fun to ride too. Then one day near the end of the first season with it, I passed a car and realized that I had the throttle pinned and for like 5 seconds. Now I'm not saying that I was going slow because I wasn't but clearly I found the limits of the bike and my fear and ability had a higher ceiling. Sooooo.... After just 4 months with the bike I traded it for.....a brand spanking new white Triumph Street Triple! That was in 2012 and I still love it! In all honesty going with the Suzuki was a good move. The Street Trip whispers in your ear like a devious mistress telling you to do crazy things your wife or girlfriend would never let you do. You need to have discretion when you pull the trigger. In all honesty I have managed to pin the throttle on the Triumph but only for an instant and doing so results in speeds 50 mph over the speed limit.

I got my permit and bought an '06 R6 the next day. One dealer told me "Im reluctant to sell this to you, if you were asking for the R1 then i would definitely not sell to you." Long story short, i dropped in once at low speeds in my first couple weeks of owning but loved that thing for almost 10 years. my skills increased as time went on and that bike felt like an extension of me. I started with a Scooter because it a cheap way to start in the Biker community, also because since I am living in a city with high traffic jam, a Scooter is really nice to commute with under these conditions, sure that the 125cc scooter I have isn't a power house, but its enough for commuting. I would love one day to have a Sportsbike or a Cruiser, but know I am saving money to later start with a 300-400cc bike.

Probably something like ... Raspberry Pi powered alarm clock sends the first inital wakeup to the bike-computer, which starts the engine and revs it higher and louder until Yammie has stood up. He then proceeds to jump on the bike, drive around, film, get home, record an additional 3 seconds funny endcard joke and goes straight back to bed, goodbye.

Its true that if you don't have self control, or the patience to learn the bike, you can have a really fucked up day. You have to know your limits, take it easy and slow, don't let others goad you into anything outside your skill level.

I bought my first motorcycle on a whim, a 1982 Maxim 1100. Not having the internet back then, I didn't know it was the fastest bike made that year. 4 cylinder monster. I loved it! I wore it out for 60k miles, and sold it. Bought another just like it and did it again. And again. You could pick them up for under a grand back then. Rule of thumb was never pay more than one dollar per CC. Then I went big, and got a Yamaha Road Star, 1600 CC's. Rode it all over the place... east coast, the Rockies, Maine, everywhere I could. Lesson- never listen to people who tell you not to do something you're drawn to do, just use your head. That's what it's there for.

Joshuafree321 i would say cc's is what sells. Honestly i dont think people look at HP when buying a bike, cause in the bike world (for someone new) they look at a 170hp sport bike and they think, ohh thats it. But if you get around to know bikes you would know that 170hp below your crotch is a ton of power, so people get to think of as "the more cc i get the faster i will go" cause technically in the car world the more cylinders you get the faster you go

Ha, I'm a combination of a bunch of these! Was looking at getting a little scooter, did a bunch of research online, then realized something more substantial would be better (and I should ride in full gear, unlike most scooter riders), so bought a BMW C600 Sport (650cc maxi scooter). Learned to ride it and got my license within about a month and now have been riding it quite a bit for the past few months. Recently, strapped a GoPro to my helmet because it's fun to watch videos of my rides, but haven't posted anything (yet). Eventually will probably upgrade to a "real" bike, but I'm good for now with the big scooter.

In Sweden you gotta be 24 to ride over 35kW (A license) if you have no previous experiences with motorcycles. When you are 18 you can take the A2 license which is up to 35kW and not more than 650cc. When you are 16 you can take the A1 license, which allows riding motorcycles up to 125cc's and with a max hp of 15. When you are 15 you can take your AM license, which allows riding mopeds up to 50cc with a max hp of 5. Annoying and long path but saves lives.

Works the same way here in Belgium. So i bought a 35kW 600cc on paper since it's stupid to buy a higher cc bike after a few years with a2 permit

>but saves lives definitely not. got a a2 license at 18, which is automatically "upgraded" to a non-restricted a3 after 2 years. i never touched a motorcycle in those 2 years and immediately got my hands on a suzi 1200 the day i hit 20. completely bullshit, this legislation doesn't affect anything except it's a license to print money (for driving schools and the government)

b0wmz There is no such thing as an A3 license? I don't know if you actually have a clue what you are talking about. And the restrictions do save lives.

Automatically upgraded? What's the point in that if you never had to test your skills on a heavier bike. They might aswell just put you on a bigger bike from the start

Heres how you learn to ride. 1st bike: Get a 50cc moped and FUCK IT UP! (Should take no longer than 1 month) 2nd bike: get a 125cc and FUCK IT UP! (Should take no longer than 2 weeks) You are now ready for that Busa or H2 you been dreaming about!

I know someone who started on a 600, then moved to a new 'blade. The thing is, he didn't test ride the 'blade, he just sat on it for 1/2 hr in the showroom, even though the salesman offered a test ride. Several weeks later, he came a cropper in the Royal National Park (Aus), after hitting a deer (and not a little piddly 2 foot high one either). He was choppered to hospital. I didn't believe him about the deer until I mentioned it at the dealer where I'd bought one of my previous bikes. Sure enough, they had his 'blade in for repair / insurance claim , and yes, it did have deer hair throughout the front wheel :-)

I got a limited scooter license because I had a scooter. I rode a 150cc vespa for 4 years then bought a 450cc naked motorcycle once I had my full licence. Learned how to shift gears properly by myself. It's not that hard.

I'm one of those just wanted to ride one day and bought a 600 guys, right off craigslist too, nailed it. But then again its beat up and from the early 80s and not that fast. Knew I'd drop it so I bought one that'd seen it all already. Its quite the hobby to get into.

Official Zephyr how's it feel to be a slave to the system and be free of personal choice? It's a good thing to live under the nanny state & do only as you are told? Ummmmm.......nope.

In Australia you have a Learner's license for a period of 3-12 months (depending on if you pass the provisional test or not), and you can only ride up to a 250cc during that time. It's a good lesson, I think, and it helps with understanding the bike from the ground up. Some people may see it as a "nanny state" thing, but at least when we are off our learner's we are able to lane-split/weave through traffic.

Just started riding. I'm a scooter dude. Not because I'm afraid to commit... But because I wanted to ride a scooter. It's stupid. It's slow. It gets all the gas mileage. Chinese Scooters for the win!
