The internals of the engine, what happened outside of it was another case. The Mazda was hopelessly unreliable as a complete package, mainly due to excessive exhaust temperatures due to the nature of the engine. They de-tuned it by well over 200hp by the time the 787b revision had arrived and it was hopelessly under-powered BEFORE that compromise. Ironically the only time the car got close to matching the economy of a by then ancient old Porsche flat 6 turbo was under WOT conditions. Porsche had pulled factory support and Merc's Turbo v8 was making so much power that the then very dated privateer Porches were becoming grenades in an attempt to match the raw speed of the Merc's. It's nothing more than luck that the Merc's retired and the privateers racing among themselves were soon to follow and so allowing Mazda to take their only win (and podium) by default.

We commonly think the rotaries no longer ran at Le Mans after 1991, but that isn't true. Fuel usage regulations, and banning of parts like telescoping intake trumpets relegated it's power to more of an LMP2 contender, which it still ran at Le Mans until the late 90's (including a LMP2 class win in 1996 from team Kudzu) It was really a perfect storm for the 787B that year. It was supposed to have class handicaps placed on it like the rest of the Group c's, but they were never a threat all the years ran since the early 80's (though it was only the previous few years they used a 4 rotor), and weren't turbocharged, so it entered lighter then it should of been. A combination of attrition from the top manufacturers, and team orders to go all out, allowed it to be written in the history books as the first ( and imo, still the only true win since there was competition) Japanese automaker to win overall.

I would have loved if you talked a little bit more about the reliability of the Wankel engine in the 787B. I remember that I heard once that the engine was taken apart after the race, and with the amount of wear, it was calculated/estimated that the engine could have done another whole 24h Le Mans race, without rebuilding it. But still an awesome video, and such an icon of a car.

Most people think that Rotaries were banned because the 787B won, which is wrong. They were banned because they didn't comply with the new regulations that were to be implemented the following year. Mazda knew this well in advance of the Le Mans race. So although it was effectively banned from Le Mans after '91 it was allowed to finish racing for the remainder of the '91 season. A few years later Rotaries were reinstated and allowed to race again but not in 4 rotor configuration as far as I'm aware.

Its not the same apex seals that you would find on a rx7/rx8 , its Ceramic Apex seals , which coast about $695 a unit and also the internals were coated with ceramic , these are the main reason for its durability. Having 3 spark plugs per rotor helped increase efficiency and lower consumption. I guess these mods were too expensive to include on Rx7/RX8 engines. But yes , you absolutely right , people do exaggerate on how bad the rotary engines are.
