Definitely! Another one I would recommend is lava rock. It has a porous texture that allows beneficial bacteria to grow, which helps to keep the water in your tank clean and healthy for your fish.

Living in the 'Granite State' there's no shortage of rocks. The whole rear of my 15 G. nano tank is a granite, quartz, wall with spaces for fish to hide and swim though. Plants attached in places.

I go to a creek to get my rocks. First tip, if you add lime juice to the rock and it bubbles, it means it is acidic, so it will raise your ph, which may kill or mess up your tank. Always add it in dif areas to see if the rocks has parts that may be acidic, some rocks idk the name but the linear sharp one that looks like slate, sometimes has parts that is ready to be severed off. If you pull them apart the loose already divided piece will separate, revealing all sorts of debries and dirt. So always make sure the rocks dont have a crack that can lead to separation, nothing dangeorus, but you wanna make sure you clean all the debries you dont want that mixing in your tank. i scrub the stones with white vinegar and depending on how dirty they are i may use dish soap first then remove all soap with vinegar scrub and finally dechlorinator. Lastly, boil the rocks to kill microorganisms. Then let it be sumerged in water and watch it for 24 hours to see if it releases tannins, or discoloration showing there may be soemthing else in there. Also test the water in the bucket wen u submerge the rock and check it 24 hours later. I recomend 3 days. 24 hours if your in a rush but the longer the observation the beter, remeber anything that goes into your tank should have a 2 week quaratine time atleast.

Lime juice is acidic/low pH. If it bubbles it means the rock is basic/alkaline/high pH. Just mixing them up is all

I wanted lava rocks but couldn't get any , so I got some pumice stone and put them above my sponge filter , they made excellent base for my Amazon sword as these are known to spread huge amount of roots . It served both biological filter media and plant base . And seriously I had no idea about aquarium rocks , I've only seen lime stone and granite in fish stores . Very informative indeed.

Will chicken bone stones change water quality in aquariums?

I just ordered a 20 pound box of pink granite for my 55g and smaller pieces for my 15g. Are there any special preparations before using pink granite in the aquarium. It seems pretty much plug-n-play. I'll eventually attach some plants to it, but I just planted a lot recently and need to let things settle, after I plant 1 more red crypt coming around Christmas
@AquariumStoreDepot

I would just wash them, but otherwise they are plug and play.

@AquariumStoreDepot perfect...thanks so much. Hey do you know if the RGB LED lights on the 15g fluval flex are strong enough to turn the crypt red. It's a red crypt that's coming, but some people are saying if you don't have strong lights or co2 injections, then they'll just stay green and never turn red/brown/rust color. Any ideas?
@AquariumStoreDepot
9 ай бұрын
@@FishRfun It may not. Iron and CO2 are other factors to consider with Red Plants. I have a red plant video upcoming. I keep getting the release pushed back because of other videos in my queue - but it's coming for sure!

I never heard of that being used as a substrate. If it’s designed for aquariums I would say yes. If it’s from a hardware store I would be cautious

low tech rock to counter amonia in aquarium?

For a saltwater tank that would be porous dry rock or live rock. For a freshwater tank you will want porous rocks like lava rock or consider adding more biological media in the tank, do water changes, and add beneficial bacteria.
