The 1950s box set still remains the gold standard for reissues, let alone Elvis. The original box set had bespoken stamps of Elvis in his 1950s prime. The handsome sleeve notes by Peter Guralnick, writer of the flawless Elvis "Last Train To Memphis" biography make this collection utterly indispensable. The "Big Bang" of Rock music. 10/10

MY FAVORITE ELVIS PRESLEY BOX SET

I got all three box sets, each decade seems to have the Elvis of that era represented, so to say. I like all three decades but the 50's are a special time, I was 7 years old in 1957 and saw all of Elvis's performances on beautiful Black and White TV and he was all they depicted him to be in the new movie just out. I remember watching him on TV and being mesmerized even at the rip old age of 7. You had to catch the shows when they were broadcast and if you missed it that was it. You would not be able to see videos of these performances until couple of decades later on VHS tapes and/or dvds, and then the internet made an appearance and the rest is history.

From Elvis’ later period, I highly recommend „The Memphis Record“ featuring great remixes of the late 60’s American Sound sessions and „From Elvis in Nashville“ covering an early 70‘s marathon session. Those are all the masters and many outtakes without the cheesy overdubs, just Elvis and the band in the studio.

Hi, TJR. I have all three box sets and highly recommend all of them, especially if you can get them cheap. The 60s set is every bit as good as the 50s set, since it doesn't include any of the cheesy movie songs. Although, none of the box sets were remastered, most of the songs on these releases were later remastered in the 2000s for 2 CD deluxe issues and sound a bit better. However, there is nothing wrong with the sound of the 1990s sets.

I was an anomaly in my teen 70s. Elvis was my favourite. I saw him live 3 times. I also loved most other music. The catalogue has been remastered so there are better remasters.

I would be interested in the complete 1950s only. The only other one I would be interested is Elvis' 1968 comeback TV special.

I have some Best Of CD's, and the deluxe edition of his first two albums on a 2 CD set, instead of that box set. I also have "Elvis Is Back" and "From Elvis In Memphis". I think those are his best studio albums, along with the first two, and I have the "Elvis At Sun" CD, which you have covered on the '50's box set. I also have a Best Of his Gospel recordings and the "Elvis Country" and "Elvis Now" CD's. And two FTD (Follow That Dream) label box sets. "American Sound 1969", the sessions for "From Elvis In Memphis" and his next studio album. And I got the recent "Aloha From Hawaii" CD box set. And I grabbed the "1968 Comeback Special" box set from a few years back. Plus, the "Golden Celebration" CD box set of his '50's TV appearances, the deluxe DVD sets for "Aloha" and the "1968 Comeback Special". Plus DVD's of his "Ed Sullivan Show" appearances, and the documentary, "Elvis '56". All of that is kind of important, even "Elvis Now". I love his cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain" on that album.

Hi there, TJR. Great video. Elvis is a legend:) Stating the obvious there, it' doesn't hurt to say it over and over again. Take care! PS: The 5 cd mini box set of Elvis' Golden Records covers quite a lot of the 50's, 60's and 70's stuff. Roughly 100 songs on 5 cds. Lots of amazing stuff on there.

There's about a million Elvis compilations out there, but one of the better single-disc compilations is "30 #1 Hits" as well as its followup "2nd to None." The former was a major bestseller when it was released in 2002, and as the title suggests, it covers all the hits. It also includes the remix of "A Little Less Conversation," which received a ton of airplay at the time. "2nd to None" is really just a continuation, sort of filling in the gaps left behind by the first disc. These two albums make for a pretty good introduction to Elvis' music for any new fans out there.

I would highly recommend the 3LP 45rpm vinyl collection Elvis 24 Karat Hits, issued by Analogue Productions and available through Acoustic Sounds in Salina, Kansas. At $80 it is not cheap but it is the best sounding version of these classic recordings that can be currently heard.

Yeah, I got the box set. One of the discs skipped. Amazon told me to keep it and they sent me a new box. I ended up giving the first one to a friend. This was back in the days of cassette mix tapes. I made some best of tapes for my mother and sister. I used the stickers on the cassette sleaves that I made from heavy gage paper. 50's Elvis was so cool. I was 7 when the Beatles played Sullivan so I was more of Beatles fan than an Elvis fan.

I love his 50's box. It's more evenly great than his 60's box, but I would not be without the 60's box because it has some of his greatest moments that I wouldn't want to be without: Little Sister, Suspicious Minds, Kentucky Rain, Long black Limousine, (Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame to name a few. And hey, It's Elvis, it's never less than good and more often great. There's also a 60's movie 2 disc set that has highlights from the movies. That one is his weakest set but it has, I would say, 1 good disc's worth of music cuz it does have some great/good songs also: G.I. blues, Wooden Heart, Shoppin' Around, Follow that dream, Return to Sender, Viva Las Vegas, Your time hasn't come yet, Baby.

Great boxset! I bought mine in the Nineties too. Essential purchase for any fan. I did not buy the other two when they first came out but years later I did buy them. They got reissued in a much smaller box set but same content. It is just in the smaller sets the liner notes are too small for me to read. Would need a magnifying glass!

Hey TJR , I have all three , the sixties set is very good as well , the seventies is not my favorite period of Elvis but again it is a good set. I find the sixties and seventies sets are available on Amazon at a very reasonable price. They do not sell them in the long box anymore , but the Music is all the same . Great Music. I remember picking up the 50's set back in the 90's and loving it. I was a bit weary of the sixties set when it came out , but am very happy with it. These sets collects a whole lot of Elvis in one place. I really enjoy your Videos.

Very nice set, very comprehensive, great annotations, great to have. Sound quality wise it isn't without it's critics though. Vic Anesini, a very well respected mastering engineer at Sony, did remaster a lot of Elvis material from the mid 2000s or so and to my ears these do sound better; maybe from better masters also, who knows. You could listen for a comparison to the "Elvis 75" compilation for example. Always a good excuse to listen to Hound Dog twice in a row.

I have to check out the songs on this box set. I'm definitely interested. I saw the new Elvis movie Thursday night & it was phenomenal. I watched your video about Colonel Parker & that was good too. I'll be curious about your take on the movie. I thought Tom Hanks was a bit much & they could have given more time to the women in Elvis' life like his mom & his wife.

I have the ‘50s and ‘60s sets…got ‘em when they came out. The Sun Studio recordings are great (of course) and I really like the version of Suspicious Minds minus overdubs. Re. pronunciation, I think it’s guRALnick but I’m not certain. Also, the company I worked for at the time got a stack of single-disc promos for the ‘60s set about a month before the full thing came out, so I managed to borrow one and tape it. ☺️ It had the non-overdubbed Suspicious Minds.

As my name implies, I am an Elvis obsessive, so it is difficult not to recommend everything, but in particular, from the 60s I would suggest the studio albums 'Elvis Is Back' and 'From Elvis In Memphis' as well as his gospel albums. From the 70s I would point you towards 'That's The Way It Is' 'Elvis Country' and 'Promised Land'.

Late 90's early 2000's remasters were horrible ..compressed and very loud. They probably could do a better job but not that much better than the early 90's box set.
