Came here after my first colony fell to ruin, I actually did pretty good for my first time and survived a whole year. Made minimal progress but stayed alive. What finally took me out was the radiation event, lasted over a week at that point I was out of food and everyone one was to irradiated to be outside much longer so I packed up and tried to move which lead to everyone going insane and attacking each other and setting everything on fire. Things smoothed out once I only had two people left and they ate the corpses of their friends but I think a fresh start would be best

Just a small piece of advice for anyone starting up: Training an animal like a monkey is basically a waste of time and resources (small amounts of food are used in animal training as treats, it can add up depending on how lush your colony is). Some animals can be extremely useful when trained (such as bears, huskies and timber wolves), while others are useless for training but good for other purposes (monkies could be raised for an adequate amount of meat, though chickens are leagues better than any other animal for meat; be very careful with chickens to restrict zoning for roosters and manage your population, a chicken population explosion has decimated many a successful colony; slaughter chickens liberally to maintain a population you can handle). All of the animals that can give milk and wool and be used as pack animals are quite useful and worth devoting resources towards building a small herd if possible. Other adequate meat sources are iguanas, cobras, pigs, boar, etc. "Wildness" basically means how hard an animal is to tame, and a 10 in animals is actually still only around average. There's some awesome potential things an animal handler can accomplish in certain situations, but for newbies I'd suggest sticking to domesticated animals and perhaps learning how animal training works with your first huskies. Another protip that I haven't finished the video to see if he mentions: If you have a grower who can plant it when you start, having a large plot of devilstrand planted during the first few days is an awesome investment in the future. It takes around three full seasons to grow, but when sewn into clothing it makes some of the best armor in the game (and sells for a lot too). Note that you might want to get your footing before doing this, because your first few colonies might not make it a full year to take advantage of such a thing.

Ive gotten extremely lucky with my second playthrough (first one died tragically and im slowly learning from my mistakes) one of my colonists doesnt do hauling but luckily the pet my team came with is a husky and can do hauling! That same villager also is good at animal handling and so it was a good trade off. Down the line of my game, Cassandra gifts me with a tamed husky of the opposite sex and now theyre making babies :Oc I love my hauling pups! Theyre esp good for when you overextend your villagers and accidently gotta haul most of them to the hospital lol

I almost bought this on sale, but after watching this I really don't think I'd have the patience to get very far in it. Problem is I'm not really a gamer, but the thing that fascinates me about software like this is the complexity, an entire system packed into a game. The thought that has to go into something like this and the sheer amount of variables for all these elements to interact has to be mind-boggling. I may end up buying it anyway just to marvel at how everything works together.
@BugPowderDust

Fair point, but although as a whole it's complex, you only take bite sized chunks at a time. You learn the intricacies and mechanics as you go. As the developers say, this is a story generator rather than a game to beat. It's quite easily the best game I've ever played, and I'm still hooked on it- and I've been playing for 7 years. I wouldn't wait for another sale on the game though, it's barely on sale, and just 10% this time (IIRC)

Good tutorial. I would like to see some later gameplay and mistakes to avoid at start. For example I now think I will have to return one game year or several hours of game back. My problem: for one year I had 3 colonists and it was somewhat hard to replace them when they went crazy (they had small rooms and many mood debuffs due to relationships and being rejected), they were wounded while hunting or during raids and I had to reload the game few times. So I was very happy when I finally got opportunity to buy a slave, capture one prisoner and when other colonist joined me. Next year I made colony nicer, I had large stockpile of food during the winter and I even have some time to do cleaning, research and everything seemed great. Despite nearly all of my fields and half of the map burned down during summer storms. But ... spring started, I noticed that I can't sustain colony as they ate literally whole freezer and because crop is not yet ready to harvest they can spend all the time hunting, butchering and cooking, collecting berries across the map and that's barely enough, animals became rare (in forest biome). So either I will get ability to get food from trading, or it's a game over. Let's blame large fires again for mass extinction. PS: characters are quite ok, asthmatic doctor with social skills, one lady with crafting and mining skills, one guy good for constructions and cooking that can't do social and healing. One new guy is good for constructions and minining, rest are nearly useless medics

@@BugPowderDust Thanks. I started new game on extreme south of temperate forest with all year growing season instead of 30/60, I've chosen tile with marble and granite and got lot of ruins to reuse walls at the start and to get steel, tables, large statue or tombstone to decorate dining room and I started with rough plan how to build the base with much larger rooms (huge workshops, central storage, larger than 3x3 bedrooms, later I added food dispenser and replaced kitchen with prison. This time I had no problems with happiness, no problem with food before I tamed too many animals (getting rid of excessive boomrats is fun) and got one useless colonist that I will try to sell to slavery and two of others are ok. This time only problem was that I had not a single opportunity to buy ranged weapon, but I researched them in a year and something. Foreseeable problem is running out of components or steel. Not soon, but in two years, it's possible.

@@pavelperina7629 Nice work :) learning the mechanics is critical to the game. I would say focus on happiness and armour- one will keep you safe when you're not fighting, and the other will increase your chances in battle. 1- no reason, if this was a proper base, it would be 2- you could. Just bear in mind, if it gets hot, you can't just turn off the cooler that is pumping heat into the living quarters (well, you can, but then your fridge isn't a fridge anymore). So, you vent it to the outside, and just use a heater to heat when you need it, as the temp can be easily controlled

34 hours in and i just learned about how caravans work xD. i would also recommond going for ''Marble and Granite'' maps i try to go for ''marble / limestone and granite'' i mainly use limestone for roads and marble for walls / floors. and try to tame a few muffalo's aswell for the milk and wool. my only problem is is with the raids. i currently have 6 colonists ( raiders keep dying no idea how to capture them efficient ) but they come in groups of +8 now and mostly 1 of them has grenades or molotovs. i have no idea how to deal with them since they just overwhelm my colonists :/
@BugPowderDust
5 жыл бұрын
I have found with the release version, raiders are either alive or dead, it is much harder to incapacitate them. With grenade raiders, spread your guys out- when they throw a grenade, pause and move your colonists immediately if they are in the path of the grenade. Set up a killbox if you don't have one (search on YT for this)

No, you can get more colonists in a variety of ways- rescue missions, capture and recruit, rescue from crashed space pods, buy from slavers, to name a few. No need to be overwhelmed, just play on the relaxed story mode until you get the hang of it.

so one of the changes is that they build the roof by themselves ? i knew that before this, you had to build it manually, and if you had more than 6 tiles between walls the roof would collapse. is it different now ?
@BugPowderDust
3 жыл бұрын
They do build it for themselves, as soon as a room becomes 'indoors'. And yes, the roof won't be built if there is more than 6 squares from that point to a wall. So, you can have a room which is 12 wide, and it will all be roofed. 13 wide, and the middle wont be

@BugPowderDust

At first look, that would seem like a good idea, but what if it got too hot? There is no easy way to regulate it. So, by using an individual heater, you can set the temp and turn it off completely when it's naturally warmer outside. Does that help?

First colony: Have three settlers, they built a nice little home for themselves, their leader (in my headcannon he was) was an ex mob with pretty good fighting and construction skills. Well, a heat wave came and my base was not cooled, he goes unconscious, no one cares for him during the night and he died. His lover, a non violent non hauling pyromaniac doesn't carry them to their grave and instead goes crazy and burns the whole base down

@KeyWiteWolf

@@BugPowderDust What is it with Squirrels anyway? Is there a hidden stat for them to be more likely to go mad than other animals, and just no one knows about it? I have played Rimworld basically since it entered early access, I've had a lot of worlds, and I have seen at least one mad squirrel in EVERY SINGLE ONE at some point. How does that even work? On some of those games, I only ever saw one or two other mad animals at all, and some had tons (especially longer games, obviously). But always, _always_ a mad squirrel. ... That's it, I now am adopting the head-canon that the devs had some kind of traumatizing event in their lives involving squirrels, and now at least one squirrel must go mad in each playthrough. >_< (Also, thanks for making this cool video. Even if I'm not a beginner, I still always can use advice, and I like seeing different ways people start out and how they prioritize. Everyone has little tricks they know that I might not have ever seen. So guides like this can still help more veteran players as well.)

All storytellers base the strength of raids, etc on the wealth of your colony. What Cassandra does is ramps up the intensity and frequency of random events in a dramatic way. So low intensity followed by medium intensity followed by the high intensity climax (everything going wrong at once) and then a recovery period where the intensity is nearly zero. Then ramp up and repeat the pattern again, and so on. Randy Random is different in that there is no pattern. You could have half a dozen negative events immediately or you could have a long period of tranquility, or any combination in between at any time. A Randy Random game will feel less like a classic story with acts and climaxes and more like gritty reality.
@BugPowderDust

Thanks for clarifying that, much appreciated
@ZigealFaust
4 жыл бұрын
IMO, Randy is the best way to play. Cassie gets you used to being safe then bam, base gets wiped out in one raid. The other chick is so jank and junk I can't even remember her name. And Randy throws both good and bad at you and you never really feel unprepared for it though. All his BS is fair and evens itself out compared to the other two being able to fuck your whole run in one in game day.
@bitbucketcynic
4 жыл бұрын
Cassandra goes easy on you at first, then escalates until she breaks you. Phoebe is Cassandra but slower. Randy can suckerpunch you with a haymaker right out of the gate, but he never ups his game, so if anything, he gets less dangerous over time as your colony becomes more adaptable and better able to handle his shenanigans.
