thank you! I thought I was going to be on this bathroom for two or three days, I got the first surface off of the wallpaper but the glue down part was really bad and just like you, I thought I was going to have to sand it. I didn’t have any 409, but I had a couple of bottles of Lysol, all purpose cleaner and it is jumping off of there after I let it soak for about 10 minutes. Awesome! Thank you!

I am a 25 year painter and I have removed ALOT of wallpaper. First I wanted to say that what you are removing is the backing off the wallpaper. The glue is the shiny gooey (when wet) stuff under the backing. This will also need to be removed. (5 gallon bucket of hot water and a large sponge) When the slimey glue dries it becomes hard again. When you start painting the walls the paint rehydrates the glue and the action of rolling smears it around and will leave a horrible texture.
@WingsWheelsChannel

Yes I was scraping the backing off, but the focus of the video is the glue left behind. Water would not remove the glue as it sometimes does. That's why I used 409.

Hi! I just got through removing wallpaper from two walls in aa bedroom with 2 layers of wallpaper and a layer of paint on top of the wallpaper. I used DIF gel and I also tried the Roman product in this video. Both generally worked great at removing the paper and glue - but it is hard work and involves a lot of patience waiting for the product to soak in. Getting the paper and adhesive off was much tougher around the edges and corners where there appeared to be some kind of tape that was thicker. The trick for all these products is a thick application, wait for at least 45 minutes and then reapply and wait again before you try to remove the paper. I will try the Formula 409 on the last wall, which is mostly taken up by closets and so not a lot of square footage covered in the paper. A reason I like the gel sprays is that they don't "soak" the wall as much. I tried using hot water with dish detergent when I first began my project and found that it was getting the walls so wet that it was harming the drywall. The thicker gel products seem to do less damage. I spent one day on each wall, though, so the time / energy / hours of scraping was hard on my body. Can't wait to see if this trick works.

@tinamcnerthney7712
3 жыл бұрын
@@dennisgarber the combination of DIF or Roman gel with multiple applications is my first step and I used the Formula 409 to get the last remaining paper off. As I noted two years ago, be careful not to get the walls too wet as it can harm the drywall. Clean your scraper often. Make sure you don't let any moisture get into outlets and obviously turn off electric when working.
@dennisgarber
3 жыл бұрын
@@tinamcnerthney7712 yep, I kill power, and I no longer take off the plates. Instead, I duct tape them up, including the perimeter. After the paper is off, the unstripped paper under the outlet usually just scrapes off because of poor glue adhesion, early drying around the cover hole. I once had a fire because too much water got into the hole. When power was restored, fire shot out of the outlet. I had a fire extinguisher a few feet away.
@tinamcnerthney9931

@@dennisgarber Good idea with the duct tape. It is really good at keeping moisture out. I had a close all with an outlet once, too. I've found that what you described is correct. If you get the paper off the area surrounding the outlet, the bits around the edge of the outlet com off pretty easily.

Is 409 good for removing wallpaper and glue ? Or just glue
@dennisgarber
3 жыл бұрын
The glue is under the decorative paper, which is on top of a glue saturated paper. Sometimes people paper over paper, even priming the paper before second wallpaper layer. People would wallpaper over cracked and rough walls rather than deal with plastering. Wallpaper also can be an excellent thermal and sound insulator. When the house shifts, drywall, even paper and mesh taped, will have cracks open up in the walls. If you paper, it hides the cracks. Many people rip off the wall paper thinking that the job is mostly done. They do not realize that they have just barely, barely begun. Often, ripping the paper off will slow down the removal process, because the paper that they ripped off was porous, meaning that the paper gladly absorbs water and holds it underneath, keeping the glue wet longer, far longer than if exposed. The longer the glue stays wet, the easier it is to remove. The problem is that it is nearly impossible to keep a vertical wall wet for more than 2 minutes. If any inch dries, you are back at square 1. The gel dries in 4 minutes, while the water dries in 2. As people adapt, evolve their wetting tempo and observation techniques, they will see improvement and think that the second, third, or sixth, stripper was the reason, when the only thing that has changed was the learning curve. Getting paper off quickly is a skill that that about a dozen tricks in concert to optimize the success and budget.
