I understand the reason to edit this from the theatrical cut (jarring interruption from the claustrophobic ambiance of the film). But from a storytelling perspective (cf. Orson Scott Card's *MARVELOUS* novelization), it does pack *quite* the punch! (This is one of my favorite movies ever, despite its flaws)
@cubdukat
3 ай бұрын
Actually it was taken out for a much simpler reason; they couldn't get it right. ILM's original version of the tsunami was done with a vinyl wave as a practical effect. James Cameron wasn't satisfied with the end result and ILM was already maxed out creating the CGI water tentacle, so he left it out, but when he was putting together the Special Edition, he gave it back to ILM and they created the CGI wave seen here.

The part where it shows the navy sailors running from the wave is interesting to me because in these types of disasters in media you never see the navy being affected (2012 doesn’t count because you only briefly see the ship getting tossed around). The impact of a large asteroid in the Pacific, Atlantic, or Indian oceans could actually cause a tsunami like that. Not unrealistic, it's a scientific fact.

There's a large crack in the La Palma volcano in the Canary Islands. If that crack widens and there is a large landslide on that volcano, the tsunami that his the US east coast and other parts of both North and South America will be hundreds of feet tall.

Imagine this, everyone was standing in front of the green screen pretending to see a monster wave about to kill them, then one of the extras yanked down another extra's pants, and Cameron thought, excellent, let's leave that in, it'll be a giggle 0:58

Probably the scariest part of this movie was how small the CGI budget was...
@DomWeasel

CGI back then get cost an insane amount. The morphing sequences of the T-1000 in Judgement Day were the most expensive parts of the film. Blowing up cop cars and rolling tankers was much cheaper.
