As a nomad living in my truck full time, I've published five books, done book-signing tours, worked as a business consultant, traveled full-time, and even got heat stroke once. Boy did I get burnt out. But never once did I ever consider quitting nomad life. There's just no better life for me than living in my truck full time.

It's amazing hearing so many different perspectives but I have to say it, when I watched people like yourself joining vanlife, they touted this is the lifestyle they want forever. Then I listened to many say when they quit vanlife that it is not the life for anyone. The problem is I think people should just stick to their own personal reasons and not drag an entire group into thier own reason and then say it's good or bad. I got into vanlife life because I simply refused to pay high rent. But I did something different. I purchased some unrestricted land that would serve as a home base if times got tough. I slowly took my land and created a few RV and van sights because I am both an introvert and extrovert. I could have friends when I wanted and just hang out with myself. I agree with your point about the social aspect although not everyone wants to be social; they are comfortable by themself. I disagree with your point about that people are not meant to live in a van. I know so many people that are totally comfortable in van and would never return to an apartment. The realizations that you are having really are more to do with your own reasons and not anyone elses. But you made a good point about trying to capture your life for KZitem must of been very daunting; I cannot even imagine. I can understand your burnout. But most Vanlifers I've met are not bloggers or influencers. I love the simplicity after a life on the hamster wheels. I looked at opinions on both sides because I valued their experience, but ultimately I build my world according to my own specific needs. I love sharing this information with people who are just getting into vanlife. I just love flexibility of being on the road or going to my make shift homested and enjoying a life that is indeed fun, but fun according to my perspective of what is fun which is certainly different from the text book definition.

I’m in the process of downsizing so that I can move into my minivan at the end of the year. For me it’s also bc I don’t want to pay high rent but also to get out of consumer debt. I’m lucky to have my parents for a home base but the more I think abt it, especially for the state I live in, buying land and helping out ppl who are not in it for traveling but more in it for necessity would be something I have thought about doing. Even the campgrounds/RV parks prices and rules are making it harder to afford or stay there. The ppl with no choice are really being punished.

Same with the land! so excited to create a place for me and my friends can escape to and build things and live cheaply without the pressures of society whenever we want. also i've never slept better anywhere than in my Element. my first one broke the first year and I got another. at $6000 each plus repairs/gas it's like 1/2 the price of rent , even if i buy a new (used) car every single year which is hilarious. if you're on your own you really probalby don't need a van - a minivan/suv with a higher roof fits all the normal stuff plus more if you're smart about it. plus then you don't need to redo your entire house if your van breaks. it's easy to swap a less built out car setup to another car. also, get a goalzero battery or two, heated blanket for winter in Massachusetts, and a good fan for the summer. I love being in it and sleeping in it is genuinely the comfiest thing on earth for me. Even in zero degree temps, that's actually my favorite with the hEATED BLANKET why does no one use them?!?!! i work a lot then go to the southwest for a few months and I just bought land there. my quality of life would be dESTROYED if i rented an apartment or bought a house - I wouldn't be able to sleep well, or easily do or afford any of the things I love.

@@OkaayYall I have lived in my truck since July 2020, and I'm so happy I no longer have to pay for rent, utilities or for internet every month. Since moving into my truck, I have been to eight national parks, the California coast, been on several cruises, published five books, I eat at nice restaurants, and I save around 500 dollars a month. Another advantage to living in a vehicle is you can drive to warm places in the wintertime, like Arizona, and cool places in the summer like Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. If I had to give advice, I would say purchase the Haynes Repair Manual for your vehicle from an auto parts store which will cost around 30 dollars. In Chapter one you will find the periodic maintenance schedule that lists all the maintenance jobs your vehicle requires. If you choose to live in your van, you'll want to stay on top of your maintenance. I'm spending much more on maintenance living in my truck than when I lived in my apartment 3 years ago. But back then, I couldn't save any money. But now, even with higher food, gas and maintenance costs, I save around 500 dollars a month on average. Good luck with your upcoming vanlife adventures. Have you ever heard the term "start-up costs?" You'll have them when you become a nomad. So save your money now. Also, as a nomad, putting together a maintenance schedule for your vehicle is more important than putting together your monthly budget. Figure out all the maintenance your vehicle will need for the entire year, and how much each job will cost, before putting together your monthly budgets. You should make vehicle maintenance the first line item in your budgets for each month. As a nomad, no line item in your budget is more important than vehicle maintenance. So get the Haynes Repair Manual for your vehicle and make sure to follow the periodic maintenance schedule for your vehicle in Chapter one. If you choose not to do these things, you'll learn some hard lessons. Also, doing maintenance is more important than saving money.

If anything, I’d guess more and more are becoming vanlifers/nomads/whatever term you choose, primarily for economic reasons. This is particularly true for senior women, many of whom don’t receive sufficient social security or other income to pay for rent in most parts of the country. Homelessness is rising across the country, as are rents. I am one of them, and will be starting full time in 10 days. Could I find senior housing, after years of applying unsuccessfully for affordable housing? Possibly, if I wanted to be stuck there, without the resources to eat decently or maintain a car. Will I get sick of van life at times? Certainly! Will I miss apartment dwelling at times? Of course! But probably a lot less than I am sick of urban living and cheap apartments.

@Chelsea so true. These kind of vanlifers who create content and making a living off of youtube lack self awareness. I mean you chose to live the van life, but when things got hard they will blame everybody but themselves. Grown men and women whining that it’s hot in the summer, well you yourself should have put an ac into the van. The hassle of finding shower, well, should have put a recirculating shower. Toilet for no.2, well you should have put an incinerating toilet instead of having the hassle of finding toilets or where to throw your waste. You would say, oh that’s expensive. Then you should have waited/worked more to afford it. But no, you bought the van, built it with the minimum requirements “you” thought you need, created a youtube channel so you can make content hoping maybe you’ll make a living out of it and when things got hard/not profitable you quit. I mean you built the van yourself, you had time to try things out what works. No, you pulled the trigger too early, you only have yourself to blame. There are a lot of vanlifers who have “less” and not complaining/whining.

Very true what you said about ACTUAL NOMADS being a community traveling together. This community created systems within itself to sustain itself long-term. Which is why these nomadic communities have lasted thousands of years. KZitem van lifers calling themselves nomads, are lying to their viewers and appropriating a culture they're not a part of.

I would add that van life is different at different stages in life. You, like many KZitem folks in the vanlife community, are still young. For you, this is a lark for awhile and it let's you save up a down payment. Yes, you're right, what we are meant to do is live in a family: buy property, own a home, grow a garden, be married and raise kids. Those of us who are older, don't have families and at this point aren't going to have any, really aren't part of society to begin with. We do not have a place in regular society, and if we don't have the means to own a house, van life beats the sidewalk, and we're societal flotsam anyway.

You kind of sound like Fern in Nomadland, but it is so true. Right now, Spouse and I live in a condo in Tennessee. We chose this because it is (air quotes) a cheaper place to live. And it is cheaper than our previous home state (NC). We are also childfree and not particularly attached to our families. We're not church folk (something people in our retirement community depend on), we are liberal and progressive. That doesn't go over well in Tennessee, lemme tellya. We're also major introverts. Honestly? We are bored out of our gourds, sitting at home 😴 We have an RV but haven't taken it out in 3 years because: #1 COVID hit. #2 - the &%#$(^ people who vandalized it, stole the catalytic convertor (STILL trying to get that replaced), broke into it and thoroughly trashed the rig. 30 years living in NC and never a problem. Four years in Tennessee and we are out almost 20K because of property crime. In 2025, we plan to sell up and buy something smaller to travel in. Probably a van and tiny trailer. Another reason for dropping the stix 'n brix? As a woman, I've seen my future if it happens according the scale of most women. Several women in the community are widows. Life pretty much ended for them when their husbands died. We drove past the rows of dwellings one day and noted at each one, there was a widow, sitting on her porch, alone and reading. Their kids/grandkids don't visit that often, they don't have many activities except church. I started crying and told Spouse "that will be me if we don't shake up our lives. I won't survive that kind of life, I just won't." If a lot of life lays before you, as it does for TS, I can understand why she'd be ready to bail. For those of us with 10-15 years of productive life left (less for my spouse, considering that he is 10 years older than me), it's now or never. We've been travelers on motorcycles, spent a lot of time on the road in an RV, and intend to embrace a nomad life for the rest of our good years. I'm worried we won't have ENOUGH time to see all the things we want.

I've been watching nomadic KZitemrs for years with dreams of hitting the road someday. I figured I could do it when my kids got older and when my husband was on board with the idea. Our 27-year-old daughter died 2 years ago from heart transplant complications. My husband retired at 62-years-old last year. We have a 23-year-old son with high-functioning autism that would travel with us unless he found a long-term job. We have a small townhouse in the city and an off-the-grid cabin in the woods. We've been seasonal homesteaders since 2010. I suppose we are doing things backwards by going from a homestead with farmer's gardens and chickens to #vanlife. We spent a combined total of 7 weeks traveling central Florida in 2023 and hoped to travel Florida for 6 months this winter. We are Canadians and can only stay in the USA for 6 out of 12 months. My brother-in-law retired in Florida so we are able to stay there occasionally. We don't want to out stay our welcome. We are huge Disney fans and spent time at Disney World during our 2023 travels. We love the ocean and stayed there as well. We are at the homestead until September 2023. I'm looking to buy a pop-up camper as a travel option. I've been looking at State Parks for camping but the places where I want to stay are completely booked up. As much as I wanted a #vanlife or RV life, I might change my mind and opt for cheaper hotels and long-term condos. Lots of thinking to do! Be well. Bless. S

i have high functioning autism and moving into my car literally saved me. i was so depressed trying to figure out how live in society. I still participate in society but i work for a couple months at a time living behind work, then head out and it’s only me time for a few months running/hiking/rollerblading/ being alone in the desert and visiting friends in the west. I had so much trouble with trying and failing to be stable enough to hold a job for more than 3 months and pay rent, plus i didn’t even want to live anywhere for a full year at once. knowing everything i need is with me at all times has helped with the inertia of transitioning tasks throughout the day and i am able to get everything i want done by living in my car! before in houses (or backyard tent😂) i could not deal and would get easily overwhelmed by noise/smells/people wanting to interact with me too much and i have meltdowns+ migraines that took the whole rest of the day to recover from. most of my 20’s in houses i just lay paralyzed with depression and it took all my energy to do basic things but i felt that i had no purpose there. also my car is the comfiest place on earth and it’s the only place i can get good sleep which has been life changing too. i use bose noise cancelling headphones so even if there’s noise from construction or traffic or birds i can block it out wherever i’m parked!

Let's be real, it has nothing to do with those 3 topics. The reason people are leaving is because people used #vanlife as a way to get fame in social media. These people never cared about the lifestyle, they just used it as a means to grow an income through social media. Once their channels got big enough then they don't need the vanlife gimmick anymore because their fans will stay with them regardless. So now they get to enjoy the money while doing things they actually care/want to do.

“We’re not meant to live in cars” Yeah, um, we weren’t meant to live in air conditioned houses either. You’ve got a case of the “grass is greener on the other side (in a home)”. Theres lots of downsides to being confined to living in a house/apartment: 1) Literally it’s what 99.9% of people do. If you live in a house or apartment, you pretty much live the same life as everyone else; go to work, come home, eat dinner, watch a movie/Netflix, clean up a bit, go to bed. Maybe once a week you go out to dinner with a friend. 2) houses are nothing but storage for all the crap you don’t need. No matter the size of the house everyone seems to want to fill it up. They’re necessary for kids but other than that we really don’t need all that space. It’s just more to clean, more to air condition, etc. 3) houses are expensive. Even rent is crazy high in most places. Think about how many hours the average person works per week JUST to pay their rent and utilities. That’s a lot of time and effort you don’t have while overlanding. Note: I’m speaking in terms of Over Landing…traveling and camping while seeing new places, etc.

Hey Allison! I am fairly new to your channel but I am Really enjoying the content you have been posting. - I have been living in my minivan full time for two and half years now. I really resonated with your video about why you needed a break from van life. I moved into my van because I lost my apartment during covid in 2021. I really enjoy traveling and being able to afford higher quality healthier foods among many other aspects of van life. However, the past couple months I have been feeling really burned out. Small things like you mentioned, like not having a kitchen, or a bathroom, having to constantly find parking, organizational hassles, etc have started to really effect my mental health. I started a KZitem channel a few months ago and it did really good but I found that it also took a tole on my mental health so I am on break at the moment. I am trying to figure out a way I can take a break from van life maybe for a few months then resume and maybe make that I thing where I can take breaks. I can no longer afford the rent prices so renting a apartment is out of the question and I don’t really want roommates after bad experiences in the past. So it’s a tough situation to be in. I’d love to hear your ideas on unique ways to take breaks from van life without paying crazy rent prices or risking living with crazy roommates!😅😅

I think what is most important is to find balance. Being extreme in any situation is not healthy, sometimes we can get out of a situation quickly, and other times not so quickly, but while in the journey, it's important to be progressive. I know truck drivers experience a nomad life, then there are those who travel every day as a nomad, and others who do it sparingly to frequently. I think what's important is to learn about the area you visit more thoroughly, understand it's history, the fun places to visit, what they're known for, and to show the world what you like to do, why you chose to go to these places, and what you think is important. I know it is challenging to find parking spots, waiting in line, working in small spaces, needing more, needing less, experiencing loneliness, or needing more time to yourself. When a person makes something about money, without goals, or losses sight of why this journey was taken, then it is time to step back a little or a lot to figure out what it is you are trying to fulfill. Oftentimes a bit of tweeking is all that is needed.

My husband and I did van life when Van Life wasn't cool. :) Were homeless off and on (mostly on) for about a decade because of financial struggles. We started out in a '72 Toyota station wagon, later acquired a tent and then a van and finally a 16' vintage travel trailer. Even though the nomad life suited us--mostly-- we left it in 1994 when we rented a small mobile home in Northeastern Washington where rent was still cheap; there I prayed that we would never be homeless again. And I haven't. In 2001 we bought our first home--ever--and after Hub moved on to Heaven, I sold that house in 2015 purchased a modest place in a decent neighborhood and I have been happy here. I found your channel when I went through a phase of watching van life videos and I have enjoyed it. Here's what my story has taught me: Life is a journey with many legs, tourist stops and detours--some not so pleasant--but nothing is ever chiseled in granite. Ever. If you want to move on to something different, you don't have to apologize or explain, just go with it. It's a big world out there I and will say a prayer that God will lead you and your channel into the next adventure. One more thing, I have volunteered with the homeless over the years and the housing situation today is critical and is likely to get worse, so keep your van. You--and I--know how to live in a vehicle if we have to. God bless you on your next journey leg. Love Maxie facebook.com/artofmaxielee

I want to do van life, but I would do it differently than most. I would take my time, and stay in the same place for at least a week or so; and then I would move only three or so hours down the road to the next place. I would buy a State Park pass in one State, and see everything I want to see in that State before moving on to the next. Hike the trails; explore the towns via bike. I wouldn’t want to go, go, go, to where I would be forced to make decisions all the time. That would be exhausting. Staying a week or two at a time would reduce the need to continually make decisions. Anyway; that would be my strategy. Wouldn’t sell my home to do it. Would have to have a base, at least to try it to see if I would enjoy it long term.

Reasons people are leaving van life: 1. it's not that fun full-time year round. 2. We're not meant to live in cars for the long-term. They aren't homes. Short-term it may be okay. 3. Not every one is leaving. There are tons of van life KZitemrs. The issue is creator burnout. It's too heavy on one's mental health. For me, it's because I never felt "at home." In part, this was because I had a small rig and could only sleep at the back, not much more. And sitting in my driver's seat doesn't feel like home.

I was in a bad place several years ago when I came across Bob Wells Cheap RV living and he got me out of my depression. He offered an alternative that I could do to get out of the high cost of living. Briefly I lived in a tent and found a better living situation and had a car that I was going to convert into a nomad vehicle. Unfortunately the cost of fixing it was to much as well as getting the parts for it. Today I have an art studio and focusing on what I love. I'm also facing a serious issue with my eye sight that I'm getting help for. Had I become a full time nomad I wouldn't be able to drive because of my eye sight. There are so many things that can happen but one thing I have learned is to be proactive instead of reactive in your life. I plan on saving enough with my art and new business that I started to buy land and live off-grid. I have a friend that is interested in doing the same and the both of us are going to find others that want to do the same so we can create our own community. Don't give up people as none of us are alone. Never forget that you are the captain of your ship and it's your job to find happiness.

I am about to retire and about to do vanlife. But I like the idea of podcasting too so I see what works better for me. Good luck on your new adventure. We all have to try new things or start new chapters in our lives even though it may be a little scary at first. I’ll stay tuned either way..😊

Your hair is getting darker and darker. I liked your blonde hair. Or brunette but softer brown. The black is harsh. Just my opinion. I think youre making this video too soon. Youre in a shiny new situation that you may feel is perfect now but get back to us 9 months to a year down the road about how you feel ..

At 69 I’m finding it difficult to maintain a single family home by myself. It’s a lot of work. Van life is a good idea for older people. (I think). Rents and mortgages are so high.

Having to create videos to make money to afford to live how you want to live is then a job. What about if you have plenty of money and are just continually traveling around? Would it be better if it was a choice instead of the only viable option? I think community would be important and helpful and I certainly think stealth “camping” would get tiring. Seems like being somewhere you’re allowed to be would be more enjoyable for sure. Just some thoughts from a future traveler. Best of luck with the new content Allison!

I save 700 to 1,000 dollars a month living in my vehicle. When I lived in my apartment, I had no savings.

I could never tire of seeing the mountains and beach. Yes, normalcy in life next to these areas.
