Before the AFL, there was the VFL, and by the mid-1980s it was almost completely bankrupt. Seven of the league's twelve teams were bankrupt, millions of dollars in debt, and the creditors were about to be called in. These teams were faced with three paths to go down - win, merge, or die.
In this 9-part series, the GAZ-man explores the full history of how the AFL came to be the massive empire it is today. Part 7 covers the time period from 1983 to 1996 - how the VFL found itself in debt, and how the VFL clubs held discussions with basically everyone to huddle together in the cold, trying desperately to survive.
