For the record, this pilot, and in general all air ambulance pilots in the UK, have dazzling skills in where they can just slip in to land the aircraft. I am a retired US Navy Fighter Pilot (Capt.; CVW-7; NAS Oceana) and now a Nurse Practitioner Trauma/Critical Care working as a part-time Air Ambulance Flight Nurse and as a part-time Associate Professor in an Ivy League nursing school (RN, MSN, Ed.D, CRNP, CEN, CFRN, CNA). Can anyone out there tell me why the co-pilot door (it's on the LEFT in a helo) stayed open from take-off (3:56) until transition to forward flight (4:10) ?? Did they 1) Plan to go quickly out-of-belt and jump for it if the helicopter goes from IGE to OGE and uncontrolably looses lift and is going to crash; 2) Have a new Agusta/Westland option that was never mentioned for the AW-109 Power to add a modified Martin-Baker ejection seat with rocket motors that blow left and clear the main rotor; 3) Need to cool off the interior quickly or use the 100mph downwash to blow dry their hair; 4) Try to kill the patient by using the downwash to blow all dust, leaves and debris into the patient's airway; 5) Have a brain injury to the crew member in that seat or early Dementia and they JUST FORGOT to close the door ??

unknown privatarium. co pilot door. they are watching all around for any obstructions, hazards. particularly to the rear of the helicopter. it allows the pilot to concentrate on the building/trees forward and not look or worry about whats behind him. copilot will be talking to him the whole time. keeping the door open and leaning out gives the best view once enough height is gained to safely transition the door closes. take note of the control corrections when landing, wind turbulance etc because if the buildings and down draft. to land they qre looking for street lights, power cables and all sorts of things. team effort from all on board to get into such a confined landing site.
@kylegordon

Just a safety precaution so that the co-pilot can keep a look out while lifting off. You'll notice that just before he gets in he casts a MK II Eyeball on the people behind the helo and he's thinking "why would they bring out a Pram".. ?? lol Always keep a close observation on the proximity of obstacles to the Tail Rotor..!!! That's a confined landing and take-off. Kudos to the Pilots and Med Staff... Nice work.!!!

In the UK, they are actually 100% funded by charitable donations. Each air ambulance has it's own charitable trust which operates it. There was nothing 'stupid' about it at all. If there was insufficient room to safely land and take off then the pilot would have found an alternative site. There was additional assistance from the paramedic observer in the left seat and the helicopter-aware helper on the ground. In addition, the camera position does not show the full site and the lens tends to shorten distances, giving a false impression. It's fine not to understand things, helicopter operations are complicated (I'm a commercial helicopter pilot) but don't use that as justification to declare others as 'stupid'. They are anything but.
