I cannot believe that they played Pat Metheny's "San Lorenzo" over the PA when the band took their encore break. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, since they were into all sorts of jazz (and Jai was a jazz drummer), but I did a double take when I heard that. Probably the most beautiful tune I've ever heard. I wonder whose idea that was.

John M: Dickie Betts - such a fantastic technical guitarist. But with so much feeling that is unmistakable. And great licks and superb timing. Plus his singing! It's hard to believe he was eventually fired, this iconic Brother who carried the group after Duane died. ABB would not have a top 10 hit with Ramblin Man. Not to mention Blue Sky, Liz Reed, High Falls, Southbound . . . What a freakin tragedy! And though Great Southern lasted some 10 years, it never equaled his success with ABB.

Lucky you. I didn’t get to see The Allman Brothers live until 1992 (twice), & 1994. By 1980 I had already seen Black Sabbath, Yes, Jethro Tull, Kansas, & Rush. It took me 12 years to catch on. Once I did they became one of my all time favorites. When Gov’t Mule formed, I’d catch them live whenever I could. Then after Dickey was fired I would see him & Great Southern live whenever they played annually from 2006-2014! Dickey is such an amazing guitarist, song writer & musician!!!

historic music I will allways consider ABB the greatest Southern Rock band of all time and Dicky as one of the most talanted and underrated guitarist of his time. With that said however, in my humble opnion, they just never got the spine tingling sound back on Whipping Post and Dreams that they had with Duane and Dickey together. I think Gregg even eluded to that in an interview. This is not to say ABB went on to create historic music that has and will stand the test of time. At 62, revisiting the old ABB has sparked the passion in me to pick up my guitar and bluers harp and get back at it.

You're partly right about losing that magic when it comes to the loss of the leader, Duane,, but that's how it is with everything that's artistically intended to touch our emotions/senses! But like most things in life, they're sort of ~Seasonal~ and we have to grow and adapt to differences how or what they may be! This is life my friend!!!! God bless!!!
@jaykay6387

No artist or band can keep the "urgency and fire" of youth alive forever, it's simply impossible. Even if Duane had lived, they would not have sounded the same in 1980 as they did in 1971, which was their absolute apex. And IMO that was the best that any band ever was playing that particular style of blues rock, it was transcendent.
@allanbriggs9007

Just a little note. The Allman Bros was not a Southern rock band and Duane indicated he disliked that label. They were essentially a blues based rock band. I accept that Dickey would sometimes move in that direction.

First heard the Allman Brothers in the late 60s/early 70's Ramblin Man. Got to see them numerous times, one time in Lenox MA in 1981, got there of Friday afternoon with three friends in my 69 Mustang, we just left from class in high school and headed to Lenox. There was an open field where everyone Parked. For three nights we slept in the field in or on my car. More friends from my hometown showed up with food.....Mind candy was a constant and when Sunday afternoon came around at 3 PM Eddie money played for three hours as the back up band and then the Allman Brothers came on around 6 pm and played until midnight, best I ever saw them, just like this. we got pulled over by the police on the way home, empty beers all over the back seat floor, the cops looked at my friend chuck and said "You look like you had a rough weekend" gave me a 25 dollar ticket for speeding and sent us on our way. Those were the days. God Bless Greg Allman, may he rest in peace and he is with his brother now

It bummed me out because there was a curfew and because Belushi comes out and does his song… Dickey didn’t do the les brer thing during whipping post as he had done the night before which was my highlight of the previous night. Belushi did a flip what you call it cheerleader tumble and Toler was like “what the ****?”. That was a bummer and the jerk playing keyboards played a ketar wit as like mannnnn get my shotgun!

@@skydogstudio I feel ya but in hindsight it is a funny story, imo of course. Im sure u feel differently. Maybe it was this show that Im referring to and not GD. Like I said I don't remember the particulars. Reason I say its funny is because u know Belushi was thinking the crowd is gonna love this! Then promptly overstaying his welcome lol, sounds like Belushi. 🤣

@@skydogstudio and whats with the keytar? This was a touring member of the band? Did he play it the entire show, or just when Belushi was out there? So many?s lol.🤣 Edit-ABB musta been feeling pretty good that night to let these shenanigans go down, that band was about their business. 👍
