I bought the EVGA GTX 590 back in May of 2011 and I paid $749.99 for it. In fact, I just checked the invoice to make sure because the GTX 590 had an MSRP of either $699 or $729. I think the EVGA version had a slightly higher clock speed and they charged a little more for it. Back then, EVGA used to have a Lifetime Warranty on their cards. My GTX 590 died in July of 2016 and EVGA replaced it with a GTX 970.

Keelan try running above console frame rates at 4k, let me know how that goes on a single card... Oh, btw they have 120 Hz 4k monitors, yeah even duel Titan RTX will crap it’s pants before getting even close to that, lol, hardware won’t ever keep up, somebody will just make higher resolution or faster monitor frequencies (like my 240 Hz monitor which is freaken awesome vs 120), or they will make better visuals (like that crappy fail of ray tracing, lol, not even counting that because it’s not even realistic to run on a 2080ti even at low res, but it kinda proves the point that developers will try to use whatever they can to make that game a more mind blowing or fun experience. Kind of like 3d games opened up a whole new storytelling dimension over older 2d games which were already leaps and bounds more interactive than text based games, which yes I have played on my dads old DOS machine ;) (I may have triple 4k monitors and run quad GPU, but I can dig the old retro games, pretty fun even if you have 1 color which is based when you choose the monitor and the operating system is on the old actually physically floppy paperlike floppy disks, still fun, but man have the games changed! And they will keep changing like VR has shown (where you really want 120Hz, and that’s needing 2 screens at 120Hz, and you’d probably want 4k if you could run it... so yeah, we are still way behind on hardware at 60 Hz 4k let alone that!)

The biggest thing that i am sure holding this card back was the 1.5 of Vram. Ran everything maxed 1080p till Rise of the TR came out. Still love this card. I had bought 3 over the years used from ebay. First one i got lasted about 2 years that i got for 450 cuz it was only like 1 year old, till 1 of the gpus died . So replaced it with a pair for about 330ish cuz the 690 was still about 500 used and the 7 series wasnt out yet i think. So I ran 2 cards for Quad ! SLI ! . Sorry I still like to say it. Till about 1 1/2 years ago when I was able to get a used 1070ti for about 250. I had them paired with a new 9600k system and it was great at first. When winter came I would move them to an open case and put my monitor ontop so the exhaust would keep me warm. Let me tell you guys if never experienced hot cards like these, they really really move lots of hot air. I wonder if they still work now. Gonna have to pull them off my wall for a trail run : ) Oh one more thing. Every time I tell people I use a 1600 watt psu, and they ask why the hell you need so much, I always say, Used to have 2 GTX 590s .....

You should review two Geforce 7950 GX2 cards in quad SLI! Make sure you use driver version 285.62 (or the equivalent for the os you are using) because newer ones have major issues in source engine games. You can also add SLI profile support to the older drivers by using nvidia inspector and saving the master profile from the newer drivers and then editing the older drivers and copying the profiles to it and importing. They are a beast for older games even up to 2013's tomb raider. I recommend not using windows xp as windows 7 provides better scaling and isn't limited to 2 GB of ram

I played Fallout 4 on ultra 1440p and it ran well enough, but it was obvious that the VRAM ran out a lot. Textures were sometimes super blurry. Ended up switching to an RX580. Btw, the TDP on a GTX590 is an insane 285 Watt.

I had the EVGA GTX 590 but it died after 5 years. The earlier versions of this card have a flaw with the power deliver system that caused the card to burn up after 2-3 years. I figured the only reason my GTX 590 lasted as long as it did is because it ended up in my daughter's system and she played nothing but MMORPG games that don't use SLI. Thanks to EVGA placing a Lifetime warranty on 500-series and older cards, I got a GTX 970 in return. In other forums I saw that some people got an EVGA GTX 780ti reference card in exchanged for their dead GTX 590. On another note, with these old SLI setups it was a Rule of Thumb to run DDU (called Driver Sweeper back then) then reinstall the drivers.

I remember the announcement of DX12 mgpu when I had these in quad sli. I was so excited for the vram combining capabilities. 3GB of vram on these would take them much further . If look at tomshardware gpu hierarchy they were on par performance with 680 and beaten by a 770 4GB version and not by to many frames. Looking at those 2 cards, they have more vram. It took the 780 to really dominate it by at least 20fps. Now, the mistake I regret was owning these and not the GTX 690. With only 4GBs of vram was like owning 980 that only had 6GBs. Objections ?

I used GTX 580 SLI for a fair while, but at some point I upgraded to the 3GB versions which really helped. I thought at the time it was a shame that the 590 only utilised the 1.5GB configuration. 4:40 - Exactly. I loved using 580 3GB SLI because of this, it made a huge difference to playing Oblivion, FC2, Crysis, Warhead and Crysis2 (I didn't bother with Crysis3). Note that I am certain at some point something changed with NVIDIA's drivers in a way which crippled SLI in older games. I keep finding some older games with newer drivers hit a frame rate limit, producing weird results. Older drivers didn't do this. At some point I want to go through every driver to try and work out when it changed, but certainly for older games you may well find better performance and behaviour by using XP with an older driver such as 314.22, though of course for DX11 one needs something newer than XP. I should mention though that eventually upgrading to a single GTX 980 did run a lot better than 580 SLI. Numerous results here (scroll down for the older tests, ie. FC2, Stalker COP, X3TC, etc.): www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgi.html#PC

Nolan Heistad well yeah, haha, but laptops have gotten better (like my GTX1070 mobile is outbenching overclocked desktop 1070 thanks to its extra CUDA cores which is closer to 1070ti). Now they are also super thin and light (mine is in a super thin MSI GP63, so it’s like an inch thick including its 120 Hz screen, so thinner and lighter than my trusty old HP duel core i5 with integrated potato graphics). But desktop in every other case takes the win, and the 1070 is the only model Nvidia has probably ever made where the mobile is better, all other times desktop is better and usually by a LOT! The older gen they just pretty much slapped “Titan” or “xx80ti” on a 1030 and called it mobile “m” suffix, but heck even the 1070 is confusing because they have the really $hitty Max-Q (which sounds good, like maybe that’s the one you want having max performance, but no it’s really the MIN performance version with a TDP so low a hamster could push more power than it could before power throttling...) Anyways it probably helps that I tuned this ones voltage vs frequency curve myself for hours and hours (it wasn’t like the time I tuned memory for no joke 36 grueling hours before I swore I’d never do it again and then like a year later In looking at some EXOC sticks and just barely restraining saying “remember last time...” and snapping out of it). Anyways, it is just edging out what I consider a decent desktop 1070 overclock (minus circuitry mods, so it’s fair unmodded vs unmodded). Good laptop if you get them used for a deal, just swap the crappy HDD and SATA SSD and toss in a 3-3.5 GB/s M.2 NVME (~28 Gbps rated read and 24+ Gbps write speed) just so if you’ve got fast 100 Mbps or Gigabit Ethernet that it keeps up with your steam games updating (I live in the US, so most places have horrid internet like 1.5 Mbps, but McDonnalds has an insane 250 Mbps WiFi so I go there a lot and my battery wouldn’t last a weeks worth of game updates if it couldn’t keep up, lol!) I do love multi-GPU though, works great for me on my crossfire Radeon cards, love it! And duel GPU just looks so cool but I haven’t bought one as a wall decoration piece yet though I totally should because they look so cool!

The casing of the 590 looks like re-used GTX 295 single PCB casing with screws instead of those annoying clips that used to break off and cards in excess of 250w tend to cook themselves to an early grave...a lot. Since SLI on a stick has to share the pcie slot bandwidth with half the extra heat dumped inside the case and a high electricity bill of running two fermi's makes a gtx 590 little sense today and more of a fascinating ornament.

A friend of mine is still gaming on an AMD Phenom II x6 1075T with an Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 480 8GB and it has had no issues. Granted, he plays at 1920x1080 but those few times he has bumped up to 2560x1440 he still has not had any issues really to speak of. This all said, he plays mostly games from before and just after the era those components were top dog for AMD, but it is also funny to me that with those older parts he can still play games that look better than what is out on the current consoles. And does so without any on the fly changes to overall resolution like the consoles have to use to be "4k".

I almost bought one of these. Changed my mind and got SLI EVGA 3 GB 580s instead. Very smart move, the extra VRAM was a necessity for 3D Surround gaming R.I.P. Also, the 590 is takes a big performance hit vs two cards due to its much lower core clock and thermal limitations. Not to mention the fact I heard about a lot of failures due to over heating

I bought this card couple years back from a collector. NOS stock. Thermal paste was untouch, packaging was sealed. Damn worth the price of equivalent 140USD. Bought it just for gigs and well, collector stuff.

The small frame buffer caused this card issues when it launched so it's going to cause all matter of shit in 2020, this is why the HD6990 has aged slightly better as it has 25% more VRAM.

@@oblivionlord1242 Anectodal comment isn't proof of anything. It depends on a whole host of factors, not least the game played, detail settings, CPU, resolution, RAM, and so on. Simply saying one has X and Y which does Z is meaningless. For many games indeed that configuration indeed will be fine, but for a great many others it will absolutely stink. I'm forced to infer you didn't read my post elsewhere before replying. Even a card with 3GB suffers with numerous modern titles, it depends on many factors. www.sgidepot.co.uk/sgi.html#PC

@@mapesdhs597 I give you the necessities? Cpu and gpu... you want me to say I have 8gb / 16gb RAM like most of you? Lmao. I'm on G.Skill 2x4gb 1600mhz overclocked to 1866. The games I've recently been playing are "A plagues tale". "RESIDENT EVIL 2 REMAKE", "Fallout 4" and the new "Modern Warfare 2019." The 1st 2 mentioned are completely medium 1080p with vsyc Stable 60fps... no drops, abnormalities. Fallout 4 I run at ultra... completely smooth at 1080p vsyc off. (Because its a less cinematic game) Modern warfare I average 70fps on medium 1080p vsync off... never dip under 60 and never get stutters (even if it is a new title) Your optimization for your 580 (if you ever owned one) must've been crap, or you never updated your drivers.

my first gaming gpu was a gtx 295 which came out in january 2009 and the best money could buy, and this 590 built on the same two-gpu basis came out in march 2011 its funny how an entire generation (400 series) was squeezed in the 2 year time frame between that. talk about gpus getting obsolete quickly.. the sandwiched high performance gpus never aged well and werent good purchases. new features like direct x 12 came out and they couldnt run it, but then new features come out all the time, gimping older high end cards like dlss 3 and the 3090ti not being able to make use of it.

I'd love to display that on a shelf, but wouldn't be interested in using it today. SLI in general was always a pain, and messing with it today on an old card seems like an exercise in frustration. Still it was very interesting to see your results. The card will make a nice addition to your collection.

The problem I find with these older cards(and I literally have boxes of previous gen high end GPU's) isnt even primarily the performance. When you are marketing a system, it has to be worth a certain amount to justify certain parts. These old high end GPU's would be great in budget builds in many cases, BUT.... they very often need the high value power supply that I would put in something like a nice X99 build, which often is enough to tip the balance of numbers against them

The new 2080ti uses roughly the same power (and it’s singe GPU). Although I think the 980ti when overclocked likely holds the record, but in this instance I’m comparing stock and most modern vs these (also Vega 64 would be a good contender since overclocked it might even double what this duel GPU used). It’s kinda more how good or bad the cooling solution is** **like my Fury cards (275w TDP, single GPU) run max of 60c with silent fans (I either have to get a flashlight to see or get my fingers whacked by the blades because even with my ear pressed to the card I can’t hear it), or 52-54c max hottest temp while benchmarking overclocked fans ramped, so like those may use a lot of power but they run silly cold on all components on the air cooled Sapphire Nitro Tri-X OC+ plus cards. If you note I may have said “they” when referring to the Fury, I have 4x crossfire in my main build, I wasn’t referring to Fiji-Pro Duo (basically like the R9 295X2 it has duel AIO pumps for that ~500w TDP card but it was targeted at professional use similar to Quadro, and Nvidia has some 4x chip on a single PCB in the Tesla lineup, you can get those cheap for under $100 if you just want a card for your wall collection since they have 4x Kepler chips).
