Amazing that everything that's embedded in digital workspaces now started as physical knobs/levers! So cool!

In 1999, I tracked three singles in NY on an 8078 to take home and complete with my Pro Tools room. There was a bit of a learning curve compared with later Neves to use the preamps as the gain steps are fairly large and the onset of distortion is immediately noticeable. When I say noticeable, I mean I hear the softening of bottom end and with accurate meters I saw my 5dB gain steps yielding less than 5dB of gain. I was surprised how profound that compression was. That compression means there is room for error if using the pre for its sonics. During check and rehearsal, I got a grasp on the change I was hearing with each step and ended up giving back much if not all of the compression I was hearing. The combination of purely class A gain and transformers is not subtle. An easy choice on ek guitars but questionable elsewhere. Back home I was happy with the result but always wondered what I might have done differently. That after the fact thinking is pretty much a non-issue with newer consoles. Living with those preamps daily would no doubt let me make confident use of their low order distortion.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. But did you purposefully not show the console phase screen when he was explaining what it looked like when you cut one side or had bass build up? That was pretty frustrating and unsatisfying. The one thing everyone “wants to see in Instagram “ you cut right out when he was pointing to the screen and explaining what it looked like.

Very interesting interview! And big amazing technology, wow! I don't think I'll ever get this in my living room hahaha! Loving the advice at the end too! Practicing / working / learning everyday, I believe him, we have to be kind of "crazy workaholic" to do this, it's part of the game! Maybe people in our surrounding simply think that we are crazy haha! Best Regards from your friend François in Montreal, Canada! 🎼🃏🎶🎵🙏👍👌😁

Goddamn. If someone is showing you something, point the video camera to the thing he is showing you. Nobody cares how their face looks in that situation.

This was a cute video. I like NRG. I'm so glad I have almost the identical control room. Yeah. It's going to sound real nice. And what I lack in Neve. I make up with API installed also. So I cover all the food groups necessary. I am not wild about the 8078. I am more in favor of the, 8058 or 8068. Mine is kind of like, the 8028. Only better. Because Rupert Neve told me so. Mine is not pure Class-A. It's the better sounding, more aggressive, faster, 1081 style, Class-A/B. I don't need muddy sounding Neve. Class-A/B is, where it's at. Just like, API. And it's fast and aggressive sounding. Just my cup of tea. Maximum punch. Ultimate sound. And with a super sweet zippy high-end. That's smooth, smooth, smooth. So only people that know where it's at have 1970 vintage Neve consoles. I used mine for 12 years before I purchased it. From NBC-TV. No crappy Austrian TV there. And Rupert told me he had to make mine, so much better. Now the difference with me. Virtually that same, NRG, audio console. Along with all of those other peripheral goodies. All resides inside my 25,000 pound, three room, centrally heated and air-conditioned, diesel box truck. And I really, deliver. This is NRG. Delivered to your home in a truck. This otherwise does not exist in real life for others. I'm only one or two I know of throughout the entire USA equipped like this. It's a rolling Control Room On Wheels a.k.a. the CROW. And I will be, flying the coop From Austin, Texas. For greener pastures. In Los Angeles. And because Quincy Jones and I hit it off.. When I worked with him for an entire television season about 20 years ago. And he told me to come out to LA. Yeah I work with people like him. Good ones. Real ones. And your every day run-of-the-mill, garage bands. And I elevate them to a higher level of professionalism. Like this: soundcloud.com/user-135130368/sets/live-at-electric-church-fm-sessions-vol-1 See, wasn't that easy. Those are all cheap microphones. Some are actually, 36-year-old, Taiwanese maid, battery-operated, Radio Shaft microphones. For room and drum overheads.. Sometimes for a kick. On the entire band. Will be on nothing more than those $30 each, Radio Shaft PZM microphones. Bet you can't eat just one. That's why I have over 10 PZM microphones. Because nobody knows how to use these suckers. I sure do. I love them. They are not like anything else. They don't work like anything else. They don't sound like anything else. And they use a, $ $0.98 capsule. It's a great joke. A really fabulous joke. I like to make people laugh. Nobody realizes how good these are. These are not precision recordings. These are 100% technically compromised, haphazard recordings. The way I do them. I mean right now. I can hardly believe. I am smoking 2 cigarette simultaneously. Stereo cigarettes. I just threw the left channel out. I've got a couple of puffs yet on the right channel cigarette. This is how one make superbly superfluous recordings with all its grandeur. I did not know a single one of these bands. I had never heard them before. This is just what I came up with as my live FM mix. Whether it goes on air or not. I spend at least a whopping 5 or 10 seconds carefully throwing microphones on stuff. As in throwing microphones on stuff. With no real concern. As the microphone is placed. As long as they are near the instrument or amplifier. That's all that matters. The rest is up to the songs. And whether they are worthy or not. As a live performance with Performance Value. And not studio trickery. So enjoy these tracks. That represent only 14 of the over 350 bands I recorded in, 2017/2018. The first 14. The worst sounding tracks. The second through 30th has yet to be released. Of these compilation albums. So just like the young engineer said. You want to record and mix, every day. Whether it's for money or for free. This is how you work out your chops. When it's for free. And no one's on the clock. And you get to experiment. Because it doesn't matter if you screw up. It's only practicing. And that's why these sound the way they do. This is the first pass live, rough, FM mix. While these were also tracked to 24 track digital. These are not the remixes. That's the redundant safety backup And was never used. Just archived. So this is live, rough, fly by the seat of your pants, live band engineering for recording and broadcast And was really nothing more than an experiment. To prove, proof of concept. Which I did. Very effectively. This should be the new paradigm for recording studios. In combination as partners. With live performance venue, rock 'n' roll nightclubs. And be recording studios during the day. During their dark hours. This, will be the future of,, recording studios. So we don't have to pay for empty square footage rental.. And you build your recording studio into a 20-24 foot shipping container. Anyway you want to. Because you will not be required to follow any required procedures or inspections. Because it's in a truck. And you can work around so many rules and laws, in that manner. This is the new way to go. As I have always been the forefront and the cusp. Of what's happening, technically. As we all go hybrid. So enjoy these tracks. I sure do. Except for the second cut. That guy, threw me, quite a curve. When he plugged in his own digital vocal effects processor. And turned it all the way up. Oh my God! What the FUCK Is with that? He's singing underwater. I had to technically change how I was doing those recordings after that bozo. Now the lead vocal MIC. Then gets printed to, 2 simultaneous tracks. One completely dry. The other with their affect. To be mixed together, sparingly. These were all a terrible technical and sonic Compromise. Only some came out real good. The others not so much. But are still completely 100%, listenable. Even though they did not live up to my standards and expectations. Making great recordings is easy. Once you get the proper recipe under your belt. RemyRAD
