I love the way they did it in this movie but I wish they went full on with it. For those that don't know, in the comic Green Goblin throws Gwen off a bridge, Peter webs her feet in order to stop her and pulls her up only to realize that she's dead from the whiplash effect of her momentum being stopped so suddenly. They've tried rolling it back by saying Norman killed her before throwing her off the bridge or that she died during the fall but it's a hugely significant part of who Peter Parker is. Also fun fact: The aftermath of Gwen's death is used in the first Tobey movie, when Peter beats Norman and he accidentally impales himself.

It raised the stakes and suddenly, for the first time, characters had a REAL vulnerability to them. We knew that at any time, one could be taken from us. In the comics, after Gwen died, they spent the next few decades developing Peter Parker and Mary Jane into the absolute most relatable, cutest couple in all of comic-dom. Then, in a story where the Scarlet Witch rewrites reality to grant everyone’s deepest desires, Peter wakes up married to… Gwen Stacy. Because she really was always the love of his life. 😭😭😭 (Oh, and after he figured out what had happened, the “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” swore he was going to kill Wanda Maximoff with his bare hands. I'm sure everyone in the comments mentioned it, but the Death of Gwen Stacy is not something this movies writers came up with, it's something directly from the comics and is very closely replicated in this movie. Shailene Woodley was supposed to be MJ in this movie, she even filmed scenes as the character, however they decided to take her out of the movie as they felt it lessened the impact of Gwen and her death IIRC. Felicity Jones's character Felicia is supposed to be the character Black Cat, a villain and love interest of Spider-Man. the Smythe character is also a comic character who uses the villain name Spider-Slayer. This movies goal was to set up the Sinister Six, a group of six Spider-Man villains from the comics that team up to fight Spidey because they each failed to defeat him on their own. the illustrations in the end credits of this movie even tease who they intended to be in their version of the Sinister Six: Vulture, Doc Ock, Kraven, Mysterio or Chameleon (there's some debate about which one it is), Goblin, and Rhino, all of which are characters we have or in Kraven's case will see in live-action Spider-Man/Spider-Man adjacent films. Unfortunately their Sinister Six film never ended up happening.

Zimmer killed it with one of the most unique and fitting soundtracks ever (Not my genera but the Electro theme slaps like none other - it's on more than a few of my regular playlists & usually the only "Electronica" stuff), the cinematography is top-tier, the chemistry with both pairings of Garfield & Stone and Garfield & Field are absolute treasures, and even though it drags in the 2nd act a bit the writing and dialogue hit soooo good. It's so interesting to see new people react to the most iconic deaths in comics, people who's deaths to you are simply a fact of life long before these movies came out, with total shock and surprise. It's always fun, great reaction. As for writers to blame that'd be Gerry Conway who killed Gwen Stacy via Peter catching her with a Web by the ankle to save her from falling, only for the sudden jolt of being caught to snap her neck in The Amazing Spider-Man #121 in 1973.

Thank you for your reaction! In the comics Harry Osborn, along with Gwen Stacy, met in college. Initially, both Gwen and Harry disliked Peter because they thought he was aloof and self-centered; however, both grew to like him (Gwen grew to love him) and Harry became Peter's roommate. Peter opted for Gwen (she dated Harry for a bit) over Mary Jane and remained together off and on until her untimely demise at the hands of the Green Goblin. Even though Peter had dated Betty Brandt while in high school and had some feelings for Liz Allen, Gwen Stacy was Peter's first true love. Edit: Emma Stone's rendition of Gwen Stacy was such a masterclass... she and Andrew's on-screen chemistry made these 2 films worth watching.

I LOVE this film! It's so underrated. There are a couple of things I would change (like following through on Electro's sympathetic arc as the film basically ignores it after they're taken prisoner, but I find them to be a really interesting character; and slowing down Harry's transition from good to evil as the one scene of Spider-Man refusing to give Harry their blood rushes that point). But I think it's otherwise really well made. It's ambitious - few family blockbusters have the guts to actually kill a character, and if they do, it's in a vague "kind of but not really" way. The chemistry between Harry and Gwen, which was already strong in the first film, soars in this one. I think there's something to be said for the clever action choreography when Peter isn't even in Spider-Man mode, which again, we saw a little of in the first film; plus that's just a neat, funny idea, giving the character these faux-bumbling action moments. The slow-mos too; it feels so fresh and creative in our era of generic superhero films. And the soundtrack... Oh my gosh, the soundtrack. 👌I think that, at least, is getting some recognition years later as it was slated at the time (with the attitude, "it's just trying to appeal to kids with dubstep"). I am highly nostalgic towards the main theme of the Sam Raimi trilogy (including its transition into Sandman and Venom themes in the third film), and I like the subtler theme in Marc Webb's first film. This soundtrack though, knocks it out of the park with every piece. The story told just within Electro Suite, and the way electronic music is incorporated to build tension in the rest of the soundtrack; the sudden dread to high-octane nature of I'm Goblin; the pure fanfare of I'm Spider-Man; the suspense and mystery of There He Is and Special Project; the slower, emotional moments in You Need Me, I'm Moving to England, and Let Her Go. And lastly, the visual effects and special effects departments are on point throughout; it's something I feel like we take for granted nowadays and moan when it's slightly rough, but props to the teams when they do it well. Oh, also, probably my favourite Spider-Man costume; and again, that's counting for my nostalgia towards Raimi's. The way Spider-Man inspires kids in these films is just precious. ❤ In fact, I think that's what makes these films. It's not the big action plots (though I do enjoy those too), it's the small, real moments between all of the characters; the scenes between Peter and Gwen, Peter and May, Peter and various kids.. hell, Peter by themselves - It all feels so raw and sweet, in a different way to the sweet moments of Raimi's films. Aunt May was lovely in those, and shared some very sweet scenes with Peter, but this relationship feels very grounded (which doesn't make it better necessarily, but it's commendable and appropriately different as a new take on the world. And actually, it's an example of how I find the MCU lacking. Not to focus on the negative-I like Peter, Ned and M.J. and the relationships they share-but nothing in those films comes close to either of these previous iterations, certainly not the portrayal of May whose worth in the story rides solely on the joke that she's hot. That's partly why I was personally disappointed when Spider-Man was taken from Sony. I'm sure if we got The Amazing Spider-Man 3 now, it would be something very different to what it would have been at the time, but it's nice to imagine). I haven't personally read the comics, and can't answer your question on how Harry is received by audiences in different runs, but I can speak to the typical dynamics of a Spider-Man story if you're interested: Peter and Harry are usually best friends, and Norman is there as the disapproving father who gives more praise to Peter (similar to what we saw in Raimi's first film). As for the role of love interest, Peter and Gwen were the original couple, but Gwen was killed off (falling to her death in a fight on a bridge with Green Goblin, similar to the situation Mary Jane was in at the climax of Raimi's first film), before Mary Jane comes in as the new leading lady. At this point though, there's a lot of variety within various Spider-Man media (comic and otherwise), so that's just the "traditional" take if you like. To answer your other question on the plan for these films, it was meant to be a trilogy, and there were ideas in the works for spin-offs. It's hard to know the full extent as there were obviously a lot of ideas being thrown around as you can see vague set-up between these two films (I won't give you all of the Easter Eggs and rumoured concepts in case it inadvertently spoils any future Spider-Man stories you react to). Plus, a lot of what we think we know is speculation as little was officially announced. Thanks for going through this journey. It's been lovely to experience it with you.

the main downfall of this film was definitely the way they tried to cram in SO many sub stories and setting up other films - it would have been perfect without the faff in between. but that’s a certain someone’s fault… there was A LOT of criticism and studio problems at the time (and the sony leaks etc) regardless of the studio issues this film is my favourite spider-man film purely because of the heart and soul the actors put in. i’ve never gotten over gwen’s death, going back over that scene still crushes me as much as it did 15 year old me. i could go on forever but i loved your reaction so much and i’m so glad you felt this film as deeply as you did

Andrew Garfield’s Spider-man is the only one that whistled the original animated series’ theme song; there was even a short violin solo of it playing in the background. That was my childhood cartoon Spidey and then we had Spidey show up live action on the Electric Company without ever saying lines. We then had the first live action Spider-man starring Nicholas Hammond which aired on CBS shortly after the live action Incredible Hulk starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. Back then they were adapting their version of the MCU which wasn’t at all accurate but it was all we had. Harry was Peter’s best friend in the comics similar to the Toby McGuire version. He suffered mental illness which Norman did have treated. After the death of his father he did become the Green Goblin after discovering his secret lair very much like Sam Raimi’s film. The way Harry is portrayed in the two Andrew Garfield led movies, he was not as close to Peter as he should have been and wanting Spider-man’s blood to cure some weird illness throws me off. Gwen’s death really messed up Peter in the comics and it was not Harry’s Green Goblin that dropped Gwen off the bridge in the comics it was Norman. I enjoyed this movie but there were parts that were not to my taste and I still can’t understand why the film is rated so low. This version of Electro was terrible but second chances are a great thing. The Rhino suit was plain dumb but I don’t know how you could bring the character into live action any other way, the comic version’s suit was fused to his body and couldn’t be removed. That would have looked terrible. As always, it was a treat watching your reaction Sesska.

You can look up “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” and read about it. One of the major events in comic book history, and considered the end of the Silver Age of Comics and the start of the Bronze (which went on until ~DC’s Crisis on Infinite Earths, Watchmen, and The Dark Knight Returns). Iirc, Harry’s portrayal in the comics was the start of them addressing Real Life issues with Harry becoming a drug addict and descending into a kind of tormented madness. Don’t think there was much drug abuse/addiction for Harry in these films-they substituted some amount of drinking/alcohol abuse-and that makes some sense, since it had declined from the huge social issue it was in the ‘70s and ‘’80s.

My problem with this film was that it tried to ride four horses. Electro, Peter/Gwen, Peter’s parents, Harry/Goblin. I wanted to see far more of Electro vs Spider-Man.

The funny thing is loved the music in this movie. The dubstep with electro, and I remember the bitter people complaining about it so much lol.

I'm sure many have mentioned that this is how Gwen dies in the comic's. This moment in comics history has been praised as ending the silver age of comic's where the stories became less kid friendly and more mature.

Its weird though that she snapped her neck inside a clock tower instead of the ground part of one of the bridges like how she died in the comics

Even though The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is still my least favourite Spider-Man movie to date, the whole Death of Gwen Stacy sequence is still powerful to this day. A truly great moment in a not-so-great film

I thought I was gonna be jaded because I knew what was gonna happen through comic books but holy shit... I mean we havent seen a scene where Gwen dies in any Spiderman movie, but, this will always be the best. Imo OC

In the comics Peters Parents were both Agents working in the C.I.A and were recruited by Nick Fury who would later be the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Peter's Parents were killed in a plane crash by Albert Malik, who was one of Johann Schmidt's successors to the persona of Red Skull. So there death and life are more connected to the greater Marvel universe featuring characters like Nick Fury and of course linking to Red Skull. On the topic of the Greater Marvel Universe, Marvel Studios actually came to Sony when they were working on the visual effects for Amazing Spider-Man 2 and requested that Avengers Tower was added to the background of a few scenes, Just on top of the MetLife Building connecting The Amazing Spider-Man to the MCU. But they were near finished with the visual effects so it never happened, if it did Andrew would've been the MCU Spider-Man and these films would've been MCU canon. The death of Gwen was a massive event in the comics that stayed with Peter forever. The biggest change was the setting and the fact Harry is the Green Goblin. In the comics the Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) discovered Spider-Man's identity, Goblin abducts Gwen Stacy taking her to the top of Brooklyn Bridge. It's up for debate which bridge he took her to as the comics depicts Brooklyn Bridge but the text states it as the George Washington Bridge. But anyways Goblin takes Gwen to the top of a famous New York City bridge only for her to fall while Spider-Man webs her but it's too late. If you recall back to Spider-Man 1 they kind of pulled from this aspect only instead of Gwen it was MJ. Norman discovers that Peter is Spider-Man at the Thanksgiving Dinner and then abducts Mary Jane taking her to the top of the Roosevelt Island Tramway holding her over the edge while also holding a tram filled with kids on a school trip. Both are dropped and Peter saves both so it's heavily inspired by the comic in how it's frame etc. Gwen in the comics came first though and then Peter got with MJ. At this time in comics (June 1973) it was unthinkable to kill off such an important character, since the 1950s and the start of the Silver Age of comics with the creation of the Comics Code. It was created in response to a widespread public concern over graphic violence and horror imagery in comic books. So the Silver Age of comics from 1950s to about 1975 were much more tame compared to the darker and more mature Golden Age. So Dark Stories in DC and Marvel were very rare so events like the Death of Gwen really came as a shock. This movie for me is mostly remembered for the death of Gwen. I loved the Spider-Man suit in this one but I was never big on the story or the introduction of Harry who kind of just showed up and we the viewer just have to assume that Peter and Harry are great friends. Electro was interesting even if I wasn't a fan of his whole blue look going on which seems to be inspired by his Ultimate universe look. Harry as the new Goblin felt out of nowhere and I never really cared for him in the role at least in this film. We got a shot of Doc Ocks Tentacles, Vulture wings, and a Rhino suit in the lab below Oscorp so they were clearly setting up a sinister six film with those characters, Not a big fan of Rhinos design. Doc Ock in the Ultimate Universe did work with Oscorp and his tentacles were created by the company so Imagine they were pulling from that take of the character. So yeah one of my least favourite Spider-Man movies, would be very forgettable if it wasn't for Gwens death but at least we got a cool Spider-Man suit and a few good moments.

The first Spiderman film with Toby Mcguire and Dafoe as green goblin payed an homage to Gwens death by having Mary Jane fall and take the place of Gwen Stacy as Spidey was faced with "the impossible choice". some of the shot references were direct parallels to the comic panels leading to her death. Every death, has a significance for Peter. Uncle Ben, destroyed him, but nailed in the iconic with great responsibility lesson. Gwen, tempered in his hubris and cocky side that he could do it all and save everyone. It taught him to be careful with his powers, because even though he was trying to save her, it was ultimately his sudden rescue that snapped her neck, not the fall. It might seem heartless to attribute death and blame to Peter, but it was the intentional brooding writing of his character that wanted to give him reasons to blame himself. He internalizes his faults and blame, and drives his obsession to keep helping, not only because he has great responsibility, but also because he has to pay a penance for those moments of joy between tragedy.

I think what we have here is the Star Wars prequel effect. Where the bitter adults were complaining about the movies but the teens and kids watching it loved it. Then when they grew up they can now clap or cheer for their loved character. Same thing happened to Haden in Star Wars and Obiwan, etc and now with Andrew.

I think the movie is a bit of a mixed bag myself (showing the final scene in the trailer didn't help) but I give credit where credit is due.. killing Gwen was a shocking move.. yes she's dies in the comics (which im aware not everyone is aware of) but never thought they'd do it in film.
