This was the second highest grossing film of 1979, right behind the top grossing film of the year - Kramer vs Kramer. Because that’s how we rolled back then. 😄

"i dont care that is haunted if it is a good price and this location" well, there goes Alexa. we'll make you a nice funereal, i guess XDDDDD alexa: aww a raggedi ann doll me: aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh why is she also heeeereeeee *thinks of mr bobbly to erase her from my brain* i know there is a modern version with Ryan Reynolds...thats the one i saw but it was years ago, so i dont remember it...i wouldnt be surprised if that one actually explained why everything was happening and had a less abrupt ending. Criticts said it was bad...i dont remember it being bad, but who knows oh, the owners changed the windows that look like eyes...i think they made a huge window that ruined the look. now it doesnt even look like this house unless you know it's amityville

Based on a book, purportedly a true story. There's been lots of people who have cried foul, but the family, those who survive, maintain most of it is true. One of the scariest books I ever read. Just kind of a classic haunted house story but more menacing; no "friendly" ghosts who just need to go to the light. These things/demons/spirits/whatever meant you harm. Well, most of them.

There were two sequel books by John G. Jones that tried to suggest further ordeals of the Lutzes after they moved from their haunted house in Long Island, but those books were not used for the follow-ups to this film. Instead, Amityville II: The Possession was adapted from Murder in Amityville by ghost hunter Hans Holzer (based on the original DeFeo murders), Amityville: The Evil Escapes was based on a novel of the same name by John G. Jones (which went on to inspire three later sequels: Amityville: It's About Time, Amityville: A New Generation, and Amityville Dollhouse), and The Amityville Curse was based on a novel of the same name by Hans Holzer (who just made up the story from whole cloth this time).

I'm a new subscriber, the algorithm found me because I was searching around Buckaroo Bonsai stuff. Anyway watched a few of your reactions now and you're very good. Not a big horror guy but I'd have to say one of the best I've seen is 1963's The Haunting. Have you seen it? The Haunting 1963 not the 90's one.

Superb shout, another outstanding performance from Rod Steiger in that one. A film well ahead of its time, settles my plans for this evening. Cheers Nhz.....

1:13 Good to know, because the real house is still around. I don't know if it's on the market, but I'm sure the price would be low because of the history. Plus, it would be nice to have you living on the East Coast, Alexa. 😊❤

Even though the story was from a book it remains a fact that five people were murdered in that house and it could very well be haunted...i like to keep an open mind. Thanks Alexa👍❤🇬🇧

Funny you think V2 didn't go far enough, since in this film, these skeptical modernist clerics easily play into the devil/Jody's hands. Too bad poor Father Delaney didn't cross Lankester Merrin's path... I agree about the ending, though for many years I had no idea of it since right after the flies scene, my mom would send me right away to bed 😄

I saw this film once and am never seeing it again. To me this wasn't a good movie and looking online it turns out there is dozens of films with the name Amityville to them which I guess is a public domain name like Witch Hazel.

Great reaction to a classic! Do yourself a favour and read Jay Ansons' novel of the same name..good as the movie was, the book was so much better, and it was what started it all😉

Sorry, I had vaguely heard the name, but that’s all. I grew up in a super conservative home - all horror films were considered evil and never discussed.

I dunno how the upside-down cross became a Satanic symbol. Wasn't Saint Peter nailed up upside down? He didn't become Satanic.

Long story that goes into how you feel about gnosticism, but the short answer is due to infighting about doctrine, it became associated with an “unpopular” “heretic” group in the 19th century. As a result, the general populace stopped using it as a traditional Christian symbol. Between movies and music groups, by the 1960s, it was seen as edgy and Satanic. That latter meaning has stuck, although I think the Pope still uses the symbol in its original context.

Having read the book of the "true story" I was looking forward to seeing this immensely. What a disappointment. This film is leaden and entirely derivative in its TV movie-like staging. Sorry, but I really hate this missed opportunity of a film. Even if the book was a work of fiction.

Possibly, but the mediums I have talked with also pointed out that hauntings like this can move ie when someone went and tested out the house, it might have simply no longer been in use by those particular spirits/beings.
