Hats off to the designers of the Assassin's Creed Origins game. They got down every detail of an era that's only found in scriptures and books. This game was so immersive!

Very happy to see Cyrene...the region of Cyrenaika was one of the most important Greek regions in the Mediterranean but is almost always forgotten. 💙
@Nonamearisto

It had one important city and some much smaller ones. Given that there were at least a dozen Greek or Greek-run areas in the Mediterranean alone, it's hard to say it was one of the "most important."

Cyrene is a hidden gem where I grown up and had my childhood; undeniably the most charming city during that era. It has rich history of science and politics in the Greek history and mythology. Unfortunately, the ruin city now is totally neglected and forgotten.. How I wish, one day this beautiful and romantic city reveals its beauty to the world 👍😍

Bravo! Such a great documentary. And props to Ubisoft Montreal they made an absolutely beautiful game that depicted Egypt and the Greco-Roman influence throughout the eras. AC Origins is indeed a masterpiece so is AC Odyssey. Haven't got the chance to sink into Valhalla yet but, I'm sure its just as magical.

Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment i am glad you enjoyed the video. Indeed all credit goes to Ubisoft and the team I simply spliced and edited the discovery tours together. I enjoyed Origins and Odyssey but Valhalla not as much as previous entries. They also changed the format of the discovery tours for Valhalla so no DT documentaries on Viking Britain unfortunately.

At 9:43, the narrator refers to the columns in the temple to Apollo as “Doric.” Watching the video reconstruction, I thought that couldn’t be right because the columns were too tall and thin to be Doric. I rewound the video. On second viewing, the columns all have Ionic capitals! So which is true, the narrative or the video?
@LordJagd

Probably the narrator. The games take a lot of liberties and I’m guessing this was due to reusing assets.

Thank you I am glad you enjoyed the video. The clips I use however are not my own I have only edited them together into a documentary style format from the discovery tour mode of the game Assassin's Creed Origins. I confess I knew little of Silphium until I came across this segment during the discovery tour but I have done a bit of Google searching to try and answer your question. As far as I can tell the common theory is that the plant became extinct In the wild around the 2nd or 3rd century BC. Although this is only an estimate as it could have been later but apprently no later than the 4th century BC. I guess the real answer is nobody is really sure exactly when the plant died out.
@NMMD1531
3 жыл бұрын
@@LookHereMars Thanks, in the numismatic literature they report the plant was harvested to extinction because they could not cultivate it. This apparently occurred in the third to second centuries BCE and opium poppies replaced it as the cash crop of Cyrene by the late first century BCE. The coinage tells the story, even with Silphium countermarks on the coins of Ptolemaic Egypt when they took over Cyrene.

The simulation is excellent and I understand it was done for gaming purposes rather than academic ones. However, I would like to know the reasons for the discrepancies with the known archaeology namely: 1) No temples have been discovered on the Acropolis (not counting the Serapis/Isis shrine) 2) The mausoleum of Battus was not a grand building but a small monument under the east portico in the Agora. I don’t think anything has been found where the huge mausoleum is shown. 3) There was no coliseum in Cyrene only another amphitheater where the coliseum is shown standing. 4) I don’t think Cyrene had all that immaculate stone work - I think the city walls and houses would have been built out of the local material mud-brick with local limestone used for temples. 5) I struggle to believe that Cyrene had all those marble statues shown everywhere - surely that’s over the top 6) The temple of Demeter shown in the Agora was in reality another temple to Apollo. Demeter’s Agora temple was a small circular shrine located next to it with a human sized statues. 7) The monumental altars in the Agora are missing as is the second Agora and the Gymnasium complex

A couple of points: I believe your pronunciation of Cyrene is incorrect. In ancient Greek times Cyrene was spelled with a 'k' and was pronounced hard instead of soft. Also the 'e' on the end was not pronounced hence Cyrene would sound more like 'kyreen'. Also your information about the public baths is incorrect. The warm bath was taken first, then on to the hot, and finished with the cold. Otherwise an interesting video.

@@chadapplin9215 While Christians make up a very large chunk of the world's population, they are no where near the majority. Most organizations and political entities, for the sake of convenience, have adopted the Western calendar, but "Anno Domini"/"Before Christ" are meaningless terms. Replacing it with "Common Era"/"Before Common Era" reinforces the notion of a global, common epoch starting at the height of the Roman Empire. When "Christian Era" is used, it's still clear what epoch is being referred to (i.e. the Western one) without having to have some special knowledge about what "anno domini" means or who Christ is. english.stackexchange.com/questions/32953/why-use-bce-ce-instead-of-bc-ad#:~:text=BCE%2FCE%20usually%20refers%20to,same%20as%20AD%2FBC).&text=The%20simplest%20reason%20for%20using,the%20year%20of%20our%20Lord).

@@chadapplin9215 Take it up with the people who came up with the BCE/CE distinction. @@georgem3270 I believe these conflicts are understood in very wrong ways. Look up the words bei Heinz von Foerster, he was a Constructivist and Cybernetic but no where an enemy to God. I adopted his ways of reasoning. It is a fact that the monotheist religions and especially Christianity have shaped the whole evolution of the Western world, and consequently, the West has shaped the biggest part of the world as a whole, in terms of technological, political, and economical structures. Still, many regions stayed sovereign and independent for the bigger time of their exiestence, e.g. China and big parts of Africa. We must make a strong distinction between these material and physical structures and achievements, and the crimes of colonization, by religious-fundamentalist monarchies, and by their corrupt high priests. Religious people did horrible things to others, in utter arrogance and hybris. But Christian religion as such is telling them the opposite to do. It is not guilty of the crimes by those who corrupted it. Today, even about very different sociopolitic structures, still the evil particular person is deliberately mixed up with the idea and the formula. This may not end well...
