Ancient Athens, in the Classical age of Greece, came up with a democratic experiment, led by the reforms of Solon and Cleisthenes. But, a closer look would reveal that this democracy wasn't simply a gift from two great personalities, but a result of a long-term societal event. In many ways, ancient Greece was the birthplace of many ideas that found place in modern society, including a large part of modern Western philosophy. Ancient Athens, seen through the lens of class analysis (historical materialism), went through a complex chain of events (both in terms of politics and artistry) before coming up with its 200-year-long democracy.
