The Angel of The North appears slightly incongruous when you drive passed it on the A1. Also the locals were very dubious of its purpose prior to it being erected. In fact most of the commentaries were disingenuous and very negative.
However, once you actually stand beside it, or nearby, one gets a sense of gravitas, power, serenity, beauty and elegance, all rolled together. Sir Antony Gormley is a clear perfectionist and the quality of the finish of this sculpture is exquisite.
It has been up there almost 26 years now, and one of the most bizarre things is that there are no birds nests on it and nor is there any bird pooh! Might this be because birds see it as a giant scarecrow, or do even the birds appreciate the art therein and respect it in a similar manner in which the locals now love it?
