After all the speculation by common folk, and abstract mathematicians Douglas Adams told why he chose 42. He got to the point of the ultimate answer. Looking over the top of the typewriter, the number 42 came to him. It was so nonsensical, enigmatic, and meaningless that it was perfect.

The quote "all you need to do now is find out what the ultimate question is" makes you realise that it's hard to make a question but easy to make an answer. It tells you that you should first find out the question instead of the answer because the question is the key.

A sign that someone hasn't actually read the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is when they claim that it claimed that the meaning of life was 42. The whole joke of this scene is that the computer dosen't know what the question actually is, and the question they ask isnt even " what is the meaning of life." But "What is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything?" The whole joke is that the question is so vague it may as well be "what is 6x7?" Claiming that the book claimed that the meaning of life is 42 is not just a misunderstanding, but incorrect.

I know the real reason the answer is 42, but my head cannon is that Deep Thought realized it would be destroid if it either gave the ultimat answer or gave its creators enough time to create a faster computer, so it bought itself several million years of free updates and resources to do no work and give a random answer.
