The Apollo (Parnassius apollo) belonging to the family of Papilionidae and to the subfamily of Parnassiinae, is a large butterfly with a wingspan of 6 to 9 cm. In the hills of the South of France, it flies in one generation from mid-June to late July. The species overwinters as eggs which hatch in early spring (March). The Apollo lays its eggs individually on de Stonecrop, Sedum or Houseleek. Once mature, the caterpillar pupates, lightly buried or placed under dry mosses or a stone. After about ten days, or even several weeks, depending on weather conditions and altitude, the butterfly appears.
