I live in Ararat, and I have been to Araradale many times, it's sooo freaking scary!

My great aunt was institutionalised in Aradale for being "promiscuous".... The history of mental health is as fascinating as it is heartbreaking.

LB my get uncle was an inmate. I got his files. Admitted 1897 at 21, born an imbicile. Died there 1935 kidney failure. Very sad.

Doug is an amazing tour guide. We did the J Ward tour with him. I have been on quite a few ghost tours and he has been the best guide. I would love to do this tour but my current health won't allow me to do too much walking but when I am better I hope to get on one of Dougs tours as he is a story teller not overly theatric like alot of the other local tour guides.

Very interesting to watch... I'm interested in the history of the place, my parents both worked there until it closed. About 'ghosts' - I found it interesting when it was mentioned that some people experience feelings of being dragged down or pushed away from certain areas. A while back, my husband and I took our cameras to take some photos around some of the exteriors that aren't fenced off: we walked from the workshops down towards the nurses' quarters and forensics, and I decided to walk up to the front of forensics to have a closer look. I got to a certain point before the entrance where I just stopped - I had a funny feeling and I just couldn't bring myself to walk any further forward, even though it was the middle of the day and nothing to be 'afraid' of. I am normally the biggest skeptic, I'm a "believe it when I see it" kind of person, but I still can't explain why I stopped where I did. I'd like to say it was just my imagination getting the better of me, but in this case I'm not so sure...

I have been twice for tours and experiencing the township (from Melbs). Its very interesting that both your parents worked there! If you don't mind me asking what jobs were they in? And do they talk about it?

I think the guy with the tour business who says hes not interested in restoring thebuildings Is selfish and greedy worrying about his "vested interest" Hes making money out of it he should be forced to pay a tax to maintain the premise To me hes no better than the vandals who ruin it Get a real job or raise funds Its a beautiful old majestic building locked in time Dont modernise it or Change it Just restore it and re commission it Its cheaper to restore it than to Build a new hospital from scratch Which new buildings are cheap and nasty and lack the beauty Of this building Make it a university or a college Put money in my pocket Give me the contract Id love to restore and maintain it Ill make it my life living there And maintaining it Take on construction apprentices and teach Heritage restoration school Make a new generation of builders to keep our roots and history alive

Why restore it? I’ve been there.. it’s old, it’s scary and it’s beautiful as it is. The only thing I would love is for it to be preserved, not restored, but preserved and just keeping on top of the decay so it doesn’t rot into the ground.. there are so many beautifully scary buildings there and so much history, it is only original once.
