Excavating clay kicks off the brickmaking journey, unearthing the earth's building blocks. A piece of land is carefully picked with either loam or clay soil. The soil is then dug up, mixed with water and then covered with dry grass for fermentation a process that takes roughly a fortnight to a month. Once fermentation is done, the soil is mixed with water to achieve the desired texture and later moulded into blocks of the desired measurements. The newly shaped blocks are arranged horizontally in a dry place and covered with dry grass to prevent direct sunlight. Two weeks later, the bricks have partly dried and are arranged vertically and covered with grass again for them to completely dry. Once they are perfectly dried, they are arranged in columns as they await to be burned. The fully dried bricks are stored in a shade to protect them against rain, they can also be covered with a nylon cover.
