Please pardon the audio. We ad to do most of this outside and the weather was crazy. The wind was bad and then it was raining later on.
This is a long video, but I tried to cover everything, and demo as much as I thought was necessary to get my point across. I have heard an argument for which form of training karate is better for combat, self derfense, development, etc. Is it the old school methodology of kata, bunkai, and hojo undo? Or is it the more contemporary 3-K karate, Kihon, Kata, and Kumite? Because both of these training modalities have Kata as one of their focal points, I think that the karate student would benefit from using both of them, but with the kata really being the main focal point. It is the kata that dictates every other element of the training. Instead of drilling a whole host of basic techniques long before learning kata, the techniques that are drilled are learned in the kata. So the kata is the first thing that is learned. Following the kata, the kata is broken down into individual techniques and very short combinations or sequences with can be drilled. This is done in a effort to deeply ingrain the techniques. After the techniques from the kata are learned and those neural connections have been strengthened, then the bunkai can be drawn out and drilled. This is really where the real learning starts. After the bunaki has been drilled then the student moves on to kumite, or live drills with varying levels of resistance. This is where the student actually learns how they can use the form. This is where they build their personal style and figure out what techniques suit them best. Finally, the student will train in the hojo undo that strengthens them to be more effective at applying the techniques of the form. This is where weaknesses get strong and strengths get stronger. Once a student reaches this point then they should keep training in this fashion, keep the cycle going. A training session can be set up any way they see fit as long at they are spending time on each subject. Warm-ups and cool-downs are a must so I am not really focusing on those. I would expect those to be done at every training. The session should include kata, kihon, bunkai, kumite, and hojo undo. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
