I recently played an Alchemist and had fun. It was my first time playing a support role. My DM let us use "Reasonable Logic" Proficiency in Alchemist Supplies+ Brewers Supplies+ Arcana made me a scroll copying beast. So my guy knew how to make Firebolts and Flaming Sphere, reasonable logic would suggest that if I had the Scorching Ray scroll or Fireball scroll I can add those spells permanently to my Alchemist Notebook.

I love the battlesmith. I'm currently playing a battlesmith Tortle with a homonculus servant. Tortle can be a small creature so I'm using the steel defender (flavored as a galapagos tortois) as a Mount, while the Tiny (silver dollar turtle themed) Homonculus rides on my head. We are 3 turtles in a trenchcoat. Fun roleplay and very powerful combat with he extra actions and attacks from the 2 machines.

The alchemist suffers from trying to be a full support caster on half-caster chassis. They do get one extra spell slot in form of the free experimental elixir per day (if they get lucky and get something they want to use), but it's not nearly enough for what they want to do. At early levels alchemist have one niche I don't see mentioned much, that of a floating weapons platform. Concentration free flight speed, even if very slow, can make quite a few encounters trivial, as long as you have time whittle down enemy numbers with your cantrips or x-bow. As an artificer your AC is high enough that any ranged capability those early enemies have are not a significant threat to you. Oh, and you can share your elixirs with your party's ranged fighter or ranger too.

My ranking: Battlesmith - S tier Armorer and Artillerist - A tier Alchemist - F It took me a minute to really consider it, but I could be convinced to bump Artillerist to S tier. It's the best in dealing AoE damage for sure. That pairs well with their capable ranged offense, which compares well with Infiltrator armorers and ranged battlesmith. I'd prefer armorer and battlesmith, but could see playing artillerist after them.

I have a soft spot for the Armorer, which I think is commonly underrated. But there are some RAW mechanical interactions between infusions, arcane armor, and potential magic armor items that are very poorly thought out. (E.g., you can't use the Enhance Weapon and Enhance Armor infusions at the same time until level 9, since both are targeting your armor, and you only get one infusion per item. And the "have cool magic armor" subclass theoretically cannot benefit from magic armor and use its core class features, since you cant infuse a magic item.) Most DMs will probably completely miss these interactions, or rule around them, but read strictly it can be a real pain. Overall I feel like the artificer class is the hardest to evaluate, since its power is so tied to magic items, which are campaign dependent.

I frequently see points against the Alchemist that misdirect from what is actually holding the subclass back. The Boldness Elixir is actually pretty powerful and stacks with Bless -- well worth a spell slot, especially if your crew has a power attacker. You can also select the Elixir you want when creating them from Spell Slots (only your free ones are randomized), so you can load up on Boldness Elixirs for combats and Flying Elixirs when you want to solve a puzzle that requires party flight. The later features are also par with the other subclasses (5th one is on par with Arcane Firearm, and the 9th and 15th giving you extra castings of 2nd/7th level spells). The main issue with this class is that you can't apply your Elixirs to allies unless they are Incapacitated. If you can get your DM to agree that Elixirs can be applied to allies (I think most DM's will agree to this), Alchemist is probably on-par or even better than the Armorer. Just have your Homunculus Servant apply your Elixirs to allies with your BA and cast away with the Artificer's decent spell list or Alchemist's beefed-up cantrips.

I’m not sure I understand. Why can’t others drink the elixirs? “Roll on the Experimental Elixir table for the elixir’s effect, which is triggered when someone drinks the elixir.”
@drasil5242
6 ай бұрын
@@cmccbuilds8229 Other creatures can drink the Elixir with an action, but Elixirs can't be administered to creatures unless they are incapacitated. The sentence following the one you posted describes how and when you can use Elixirs: "Beginning at 3rd level, whenever you finish a long rest, you can magically produce an experimental elixir in an empty flask you touch. Roll on the Experimental Elixir table for the elixir's effect, which is triggered when someone drinks the elixir. *As an action, a creature can drink the elixir or administer it to an incapacitated creature.*" -TCE p14 Elixirs are not worth their Spell Slot if the cost is an Action. But if you can apply a d4 that stacks with bless (and 2d6+int temp later on) as a BA to an ally, I'd say that would be on par with Bard's 5th level inspiration at least, making Alchemist a decent subclass.

I gotta say, I'm a lot higher on Alchemist now that I've played a GWM martial... that Boldness elixir is pretty amazing as it stacks with Bless, and you can have a homonculus use its Action to apply it (or familiar with dip or Strixhaven Primer). I may work it into a build to play on a WM, at some point... maybe combo it with Barbarian since elixirs aren't casting.

From my very limited experience, I played artificer only 2 times (one actually by accident) and it was essentially a very similar character. Essentially both very 1shots at level 10/11. (long story short, they are both the same build). Anyway, it was an armorer and it felt amazing. From my very limited understanding of the class for the armorer in particular, the class ends up starting very average but really picks up at the end of T2. Flash of genius, magic item adept, spell storing item, the armorer level 9 feature, scaling infusions getting a buff at level 10 (getting +2 armor is insane), as well as the 3rd level spells and level 10 infusions to replicate magic items which are insane. We had 1 magic item, and I managed to get my DM to let me get a ring of protection. I know I was missing the shield spell (why doesn't armorer have it :( ), but with flash of genius, mind sharpener, proficiency in con saves, +1 shield, +2 armor, +2 weapon, winged boots, cloak of protection, ring of protection and being a gnome (adv saves vs magic) and casting haste on myself made me crazy tanky, fast, flying, and with a soft taunt to protect my party. You also have proficiency bonus times your level in temp hp as a bonus action. Which ends up being a ton of hp. At level 8, this character would have felt very very weak since the subclass seems to really pick up pace at that point. Not saying it is better than a wizard, but it feels really good and you have tons of different resources to use in all situations. So I fully agree with the A armorer.
@benw7616

For me Armourer is S class, take duel weilder and you can use a light crossbow and still get 2 attacks off with your lighting launcher. The lightning launcher doesn't need to be in your hand, your armour is your focuse, you can hold onto the crossbow with 1 hand should you need a free hand for a spell, otherwise you get 1d8+3d6+(int*2) damage a round not counting the infusions you can place ontop of your weapons. Then if you attacked 2 different creatures with your lighting launcher thats 2 monsters with advantage on them. That advantage doesnt end untill they are attacked while also buffing the damage by 1d6 should they be hit, then if that attack crits its 2d6. And thats all without casting a single spell or using a magic item

I agree that armorer is frequently underrated, but I have one correction. Two weapon fighting only works with melee weapons. Hand crossbows having the light property is an oversight. As written, the only way it's benefit could be applied is if you beat people with the crossbow Two-Weapon Fighting: When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you’re holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you’re holding in the other hand. Dual Wielder: You can use two-weapon fighting even when the one-handed melee weapons you are wielding aren't light.

Alchemist F; Armorer A; Artillerist B; Battlesmith A Alchemist- An explanation seems unneeded. Spamming the alter self potion could be kind of neat for a specific kind of build though. It's too bad that the potions can't be consumed as a bonus action or object interaction. 3 levels Could be ok for a wizard that wants healing access and/or pseudo-bless. Could be thematic for a transmutation wizard. Artillerist- For me the Artillierist spell list is disappointing by the time that you get it, and the damage contributions of their features seem like they would fail to keep up/justify their status as a half caster. Armorer- The extra infusions you can apply is basically my favorite artificer subclass feature. I dislike how specific the subclass features are [not everyone wants to play Iron Man...] and the Int attacks being limited to the subclass weapons is kind of unfortunate [Lightning resistance/immunity w/ no means of bypassing is a big liability, there's basically no situation where lightning weapon damage would be superior to magical piercing aside from a hypothetical piercing immune creature. Also how do you describe a punch that deals thunder damage?...] And the subclass's 5th level spell selections don't make much sense. Banishing smite would have been thematic. Shield should be there too. Honestly, Shield should just be an artificer spell. Battlesmith- Mechanically solid, I just hate that the best martial artificer also has a robot pet that they have to justify. The great weapon wielder and the pet archetype seem like they should have been 2 different subclasses. I'm always bending over backwards to find interesting justifications for the steel defenders existence, when all I really wanted was an Int based weapon wielder. That said, it can be a solid minion and brings great value for a level 1 spell slot the higher that you go in the class. Spell storing item-Warding bond lets you use it as a HP battery for you or an ally as well

So i have include Keith Baker's other subclasses in my ranking that he released in his book in the DM's Guild called Exploring Eberron. Also, i rank the subcleasses on flavor, on flexibility, adapability, and verstility (basically meaning having more options and being able to switch options when needed.) I also rank the subclasses based on how they affect the base class chassis. Do they help uplift a poor chassis, don't really do anything for it, take a great chassis and go above and beyond, or take a good chassis and drag it down into the dirt. To help me with this i first give each class a base rank. Artificers, because of their spells and their ability to prepare spells (even though they are a half caster) and the infusions they get to take, they have a lot of flexibility, and versatility. So the base Artificer chassis gets an A minus. (minus because being a half caster does drag it down just a bit.) So that A- is what i measure the subclasses against. Any subclass that doesn’t really add anything to class will also be around an A-. So here are my rankings of the subclasses and reasonsings: Alchemist: D There are some cool thing about the Alchemist, but everything else kind of drags the entire class into the mud. Cool concept, poorly executed. Armorer:: S.+ Not only does it have versatility in the choices of armor models, each with it’s own unique ability, and the flexibility to change it when needed, and top of being able to fully utilize the thing that makes Artificers so great, their Artificer Infusions; The Armorer can’t be beat. Artillierist: B- Very cool subclass, and could be very fun to build around, but fact that it deosn’t get extra attack really hammers i down. Like if it got all that it got and got extra attack, it could A+, not yet S tier, but still close. Battle Smith: A The Battlesmith is great, but not excellent. It ihas everything that you would want for an arcane techno focused beast master ranger, and it does get a lot of good stuff, making it truthfully the better beast master ranger than the ranger’s own beast master subclass. The Steel defender, still doesn’t scale that well as far as survivability goes, so in the late game the Battle Smith will have to be very careful in how they deploy their defender if they wish it to stay alive. Forge Adept (from Exploring Eberron) A+ This is better than the Battle Smith.. It is a weapons focused Artificer. It’s almost like the Hexblade of the Artificer class. They get battle ready like the Battle Smith, but they also get an ability to make their weapon special. I have much more interest in building Forge Adepts than Battle Smiths. Maverick: C The Maverick is trying to be the major spellcasting subclass of the Artificer, giving extra cantrips and spells, but i don’t think it is enough to make it even close to a full caster. It doesn’t drag the class chassis down, but it tries to make the chassis into something that it’s not, which is why it falters.

You should also take a look at the Mastermaker subclass from the Dread Metrol book, also from Keith’s crew. It’s focused around a battlefist prosthetic that has a handful (ha) of customization options and gets bonus infusions like the Armorer. It also gets damage scaling that makes it hit like a truck. I’ve been playing with one in my party from 1-17, he’s a beast.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Dungeon Dudes rank a subclass below a B. In one of their recent videos they realized mid-analysis a subclass was fundamentally broken in ways that meant for most fights you effectively have no subclass, and they still gave it a B. So if you see them rank something a B, just consider it to be an F. For Battlesmith, I’m not sure I heard you mention that Arcane Jolt has a healing option. Thats what I mostly used it for when I played a high level Battlesmith - like a Celestial Warlock, except the heal was part of the action I was already going to do anyway. Efficient way to get people off the floor.

My Homebrew Artificer subclass ranking [because offical Artificer subclasses are out-a-whack and boring in comparison to the Alt. Artificer made by Laserllama over on GMBinder] S. Tier: • Alchemist: By far the best remake of the alchemist. You get a couple of extra Infusions you can use to create Elixers that copy spells, which can be drunk, administered, or thrown. And each of these Elixer Infusion spells can be changed upon a long rest, meaning you essentially are getting a wizard's spellbook amount of extra spells. Oh also you get a little Alchemical Homunculus pet. • Armorer: Slightly upgraded version of the offical subclass, so its good+good=great. • Battle Smith: If the official Battle Smith was great, imagine it even better! Now you can modify your Steel Defender so no two are the same. It can cast spells and even gain Infusions. • Wandslinger [Alternate Artilierist]: Whereas the Gunsmith focuses on the firearms side of the official Artillerist, this subclass focuses on the magic side. And though it's called the Wandslinger, you can still flavor your Arcane Firearm as an Eldritch Cannon/Gun. A. Tier: • Gunsmith [Patreon]: Alternate version of the Artillerist that's more focused on building firearms than magic. As you gain levels you modify your gun, from having elemental shots to it becoming an automated turret. • Forge Knight: Forge/enchant your very own magic melee weapons. B. Tier: • Agent [Patreon, but free]: Live out your fantasy of playing as a 007/Mission Impossible secret agent. Get good spy-themed spells, a pair of enchanted glasses/goggles/etc. that help you track down targets and exploit their weaknesses, and restrain targets easily. Pair this up with Ranger or Rogue, and your'e a badass. On it's own, its good still. • Biomancer: Learn the Find Familiar spell to create a little golem creature and modify your own body in twisted ways. • Chronotheif: Become a manipulator of time. Essentially become Tracer from Overwatch with a few extra abilities, plus access to time Dunamancy spells. • Composer: Craft an enchanted musical Instrument to bash your enemies heads in with a lute dealing Thunder DMG or send out a sonic blast with your violin. Pairs up really well with Bard. • Enhanced: Wanna be a cyborg or put mechanical gear over your limbs? Well now you can with this Unearthed Arcana based subclass. • Mechanic [Patreon, but free]: Create your own magical vehicles that you can cast spells through, starting off with a magical motorcycle and building up to the batmobile. And to compensate for the limitations of the vehicles size (ex. bringing it into narrow dungeons), you get the Machanic's Jacket which gives ya some good abilities while off your vehicle. • Puppeteer: Create enchanted strings to manipulate your allies or enemies like puppets, such as casting your spells through your allies or giving disadvantage to your enemeis. C. Tier • Aeronaut: Craft a flying machine (either wings or hover board) to fly around the battlefield. Flight is good but not any unique abilities with the flying machine itself, and can't put Infusions into it. • Archivist: Based on the Unearthed Arcana subclass; really good if ya wanna play as an Artificer with the almighty power of Caligraphy but don't wanna build anything. • Dungeneer: Set up traps and create dungeons of your own. Draw back is this subclass is about setting up your ataccks so not really good in surprise attacks. • Machinist: The Battle Smith, but with tiny robots, each with their own module - ex. Armor: your little robot forms around your body to create a suit of armor. Draw back is that it'd be much better if the little robots used the options of the Find Familiar spell so they'd have more versatility. • Pilot [Patreon, but free]: Create a suit of armor that you can enlarge to either play as a Giant-Man character or roleplay as you piloting a giant mecha. Needs more versatility though. • Reanimator [Patreon, but free]: Its Alive!!! Play as frankenstein to bring to life your own reanimated corpses, whether they be Beasts, Monstrosities, Abberations, or even Dragons and Giants. Only draw back, which is severe, is ya don't start with your own reanimated corpse like a Battle Smith's Steel Defender and ya gotta finish your first fight without one to then get a slain enemy reanimated, and ya can't reanimate Humanoids. But once ya get going it snowballs into being good. • Poisoner [Patreon, but free]: Similar to the Alchemist, but ya craft poisons. Needs some updating to be better. D. Tier: • - F. Tier • -

I’m gonna say it, the Dungeon Dudes are just flat out wrong with their Artificer rankings. The Armorer only really looks good when you read all of its features at the same time. The Armorer gets its best spells and abilities at levels 9 and up meaning most of the game you’ll be a mediocre character with a really cool aesthetic.
