“The Ash-tree” is a short story by M.R. James, published in his 1904 collection “Ghost Stories of an Antiquary”. The story takes place in the late 17th century and the mid-18th century. The main character is Sir Matthew Fell, a wealthy landowner in Castringham, Suffolk. The story revolves around a cursed ash tree that grows outside his bedroom window. The tree is believed to be the haunt of a witch named Mrs. Mothersole, who was hanged for witchcraft. After Sir Matthew dies, his grandson, Sir Richard Fell, inherits the estate and enters the same bedroom. He, too, is tormented by the tree and eventually dies from a mysterious illness.
The story is a classic example of James’s writing style, characterised by a slow build-up of tension and a focus on the supernatural. It has been praised for its use of imagery and its ability to create a sense of unease in the reader.
