Bosnia was at the time inhabitated over 90% by Serbs as it was since the medeival ages, Austria Hungary proclaimed the anexy of Bosnia and appointed the tyrant Oscar Pocorek, the army general who’ ass Serbs kicked in the first allied victory against the forces of axis the Battle of Cer, to govern it. To add to the provocation they’ve organized military manouvers (which is what Ferdinand was there for) on the 28th June thr anniversary of Battle of Kosovo in 1389- the most sacred date and event in Serbian history. Austro-Hungarians and the aforementioned Pocorek have personally ordered for innocent civilians mostly children and the elderly to be hanged in Macva and the City if Sabac region. Their doctrine of how to disciplin the locals was 30 years after adopted by the nazis who used to kill 100 Serbian civilians for a single german soldier killed in battle by the Serbian guerrila after Yugoslavian army collapsed in 1941.

Dont forget the sad irony that Franz Ferdinand was sympathetic toward Serbia and often was at odds against Conrad von Hötzendorf who repeatedly called for harsher treatment and war. I was thinking the same exact thing. If this assassination had never taken place it's interesting to speculate what might/would have happened. If a time machine were ever invented and these events could be stopped who knows what the consequences might be? Chances are some of us might never have been born or might be living in a different country. World history might have been better or maybe even worse than what happened since that day. No way to tell but it's intriguing to speculate. I'm sure our lives would have taken quite different paths.

4:06 That was misleading, Gavrilo was a member of an organisation called "Young Bosnia" that was supported by "Black hand" organization.

The name if the organization was Unity or Death ( unity of all southern slavs in one country) it was later known as the black hand (black hand was one if their founding symbols including a handgun and a bayonette) this was the organization that plotted the assasination of Serbian king Aleksandar Obrenovic in 1903.

This isn't funny; I didn't laugh. The joke arrived amid the conversation like a well-packaged surprise, teased by a build-up that promised comedic gold. Yet, as the narrative unfolded and reached its climax, it felt akin to expecting a grand finale but getting a deflated balloon instead. The room, filled with eager anticipation, became an arena of awkwardness as the punchline fell flat, hitting the floor with a resounding thud that echoed in the ensuing silence. It wasn't merely the absence of laughter that lingered but the collective pause of disbelief. It was as if the joke took a detour from humor and ventured into a territory unknown, leaving us stranded without a map. The hopeful expectation melted into a concoction of puzzled expressions and uneasy glances, each person grappling to salvage something from the wreckage of this failed attempt at humor. The echo of an anticipated roar of laughter was replaced by an uncomfortable quiet, a vacuum where amusement should have thrived. The joke, a beacon of anticipated mirth, became a testament to the enigmatic nature of humor-a precarious tightrope walk where balance determines success. In this instance, the equilibrium tipped, leaving us suspended in the aftermath of a joke gone awry. Despite the well-intentioned setup and the promising beginning, it culminated in a void, a black hole of sorts that swallowed the laughter whole. Yet, within this vacuum of amusement, lay the curious aftermath-a bonding experience born not from shared hilarity, but from the collective acknowledgment of an awkward moment. It became a catalyst for an unexpected camaraderie, uniting us in a silent understanding of the unspoken truth: not every attempt at humor hits the mark, but sometimes the miss becomes the anecdote, creating a memory that surpasses the fleeting amusement of a successful joke.

In the aftermath of the assassination AH demanded a long list of concessions from Serbia to avoid war - all of which Serbia unexpectedly granted. The Austrians declared war anyway.

I find it a bit silly how so many people think that just this one gunshot resulted in millions of wasted lives. You can tell the situation back then was grim and unstable, something would've snapped eventually.

The gunshot had a domino effect because the crime committed by the gunshot was a very serious one. It gave the Austro-Hungarian empire a justifiable reason for declaring war on Serbia. The domino effect then took over.

Franz Ferdinand had a fondness for trophy hunting that was excessive even by the standards of European nobility of this time. In his diaries he kept track of an estimated 300,000 game kills, 5,000 of which were deer. About 100,000 trophies were on exhibit at his Bohemian castle at Konopiště which he also stuffed with various antiquities, his other great passion.
