This is what I find hilarious about parts of the USA. Here in the UK, technically we’re a “Christian nation” with our monarch defending the faith and all that, while the US was founded as a secular nation. Despite this, if anyone tried to have creationism taught as a scientific theory in schools, they’d get shot down instantly (maybe not in faith schools, but that’s what you get for sending your kids to one!), while in the US these bills are passing on a fairly regular basis. If this particular bill passes, I’d happily help fund a legal challenge to have the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and the Congregation of Follows of the Universe-Farting Pixies be taught as a theory towards the formation of our present universe and the diversity of life as we find today.

I also read my comments back and I should have worded it more along the lines of “these bills passing too often”. I’m talking about various bills including the well noted new Texas bill which we all know is heavily motivated by religion. I don’t need to live in the US to know that. I also know that the overwhelming majority of bills do fail, but it’s sad to see now many do still get through in various states. From New Zealand. I have been an atheist since school (1970's). I used to engage with street corner evangelists but my knowledge was limited to what I had learnt at Sunday school. My objection to religion has hardened in recent years having seen the damage done to friends and their families by religion. Today I got a cold call on my landline from someone I assume was Mormon but she identified herself as being from an organisation that sounded a lot like a government department. Wish I had recorded it. She then eased in to God and belief and I went gentle with her. Gradually upping the ante as opportunity arises. When pressured on slavery she went in to full apologist mode saying there were good slave owners but my knowledge of the details had her stumbling. I asked her directly whether she would have been happy being a slave and she admitted to not wanting that. I was able to take control of the conversation in that we then discussed what I wanted. Eg Genocide. Apparently that was ok because the others worshipped false Gods. So then pressure went on as to what made her god more believable. A curious explanation was that now we have Government. So I asked her if the Romans and Greeks did not have government. They had graven images therefore not real. I suggested they just representations of their gods but she didn't accept that. I moved on to pressuring her on the morals of her God and she made it obvious she wanted to back out of the call so I guess I did her a favour and hung up on her. I want to thank you guys for giving me the knowledge to challenge these people.

I don't really see any fault with this (other than lack of definitions). It seems to be a great explanation for the observed fact that there's a significant number of people who just never die. What's this?! there are religions which believe in rebirth. The thing is that nobody ever remembers past lives so whats the point in believing in this stuff when you always start from zero subjectively? You are unable to profit or even learn from past mistakes
@galacticbob1
3 жыл бұрын
@@fritzhaselnuss7852 adherents of those same religions would see your question as being like, "why would you even play a game at all, if it's possible for you to lose?" Imagine you are a divine immortal being, and you wanted to experience what existence would be like if you and beings around you were constantly changing instead of being the same all the time. One thing that you could do is to put on the divine equivalent of a puppet theater, with yourself playing as the audience but also all of the actors. However, you really want to get into character, so you play each part as if that individual actor has no knowledge of the overarching plot, the other characters' motivations, or even the fact that it's all a play. As a divine being, you can both play all of those parts at once while also having them seem completely separated from you. Generally, this "puppet show" concept of God is how I understand most of the religions that incorporate the idea of multiple lives operate. Of course, it's overly general; like saying that Christians believe in just one God - but that neglects things like the trinity, beatification of the saints, etc. My point is that the reason why the idea of reincarnation (even if you don't remember your past lives) has a practical religious impact is that it does actually provide a motivation for following that religion. Even if your current earthly incarnation doesn't have direct knowledge of your past lives, the eternal part of yourself accumulates those experiences over it's multiple lifetimes. For Hindus, that means doing good things so that you attain progressively better lives. For some buddhists, it means accumulating the knowledge necessary to free yourself from that cycle. For Jains, it's a sort of combination of the above two. But it does have a very practical impact on the daily life of the believer in reincarnation. Just to note, I don't believe any of that (so I probably made a mistake somewhere), I just thought I'd give a point of view as to why someone would care about past or future lives that they don't remember, if they believed in that.

It’s my contention that the advent of Christianity and Islam when the Roman Empire collapsed, did delay the advancement of human knowledge and living conditions for more than 1000 years. From the 5th century CE until the 17th century of Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo, nothing significant was contributed to human knowledge. Neil DeGrasse Tyson has a favourite recount of the Arabic culture which during Europe dark ages, that was keeping the ball rolling in astronomy until an influential cleric defined the dealing with numbers as “of the devil”, thereafter condemning Arabic country to the back seat of progress. The real deal breaker came from Florence where the Renaissance started from art and spread to science. Progress came, in spite of religion, not because of it.

Jules needs to find out more about all the changes to the earth's land masses that have occurred since Pangea broke up. Roughly speaking, Australia was still connected to south east Asia (called Sahul I think around 50,000-ish years ago?) when people first migrated there, and similarly North America was connected via the Beringia land bridge which is now the Bering Strait. This person still insisted that I was not an atheist unless I willfully would never accept god. I pointed out that being an atheist has nothing to do with what I MIGHT believe in the future, just simply that currently I am not convinced. Also pointed out that I am a lot more "gnostic" about certain religious claims. , and also I really don't give a shit what he calls me, but what really pisses me off is being told what I should call myself. I wouldn't tell somebody who is a christian that they think that comunion bread actually turns into the body of christ, and if they don't they are not a christian because they may not be catholic. @@michaelmay5453 I know you just explained that, which is why I responded. I was stating that I thought you may be wrong. I was not aware that Neanderthals and denisovans were considered homo sapiens. I knew they were considered homo species, but not homosapiens. You may be correct, in which case I appreciate the correction.
