Hey, there’s more to your Comment than merely a humorous one-liner……it reminds me of what I like to call ‘2,000 years of Jesus spin’ by which I mean generations have become unconsciously indoctrinated and influenced by Christian imagery, iconography, and its day-to-day presence in civil society and everyday language. It’s what makes it SO difficult to get people to see how they have been persuaded to believe and accept something that logically they really should be questioning or rejecting altogether. Part of my stepping back from religion was frustration at how every church decision, no matter how innocuous, always managed to deeply offend someone in the congregation (of all churches I've ever been in), and the realization that "Oh! I'm all good with trans people or whoever they identify as. Clearly the more science discovers, the further theist claims recede. These days Dads are loved by their children. Not feared. Clearly their claimed God had very old fashioned outdated traits, ironically. He came with a sword? My dad has become much more rational with time and now is a freethinker. That side of the family is still highly religious, so you can imagine it is very awkward at family functions with me and my cousin who is also openly gay. We happen to be double first cousins. I think Matt missed his own analogy with Joel at the end. When he said, "Do you believe the same song can play on two different radios?" the obvious rebuttal would be: We have evidence that the song exists separate from the radios, do you have evidence that your "basic awareness" (or whatever nonsense he said, I've already forgotten) exists outside yourself?

It sometimes pisses them of 'cause I somewhat accused them of witch-craft, or... at least stops them from making such suggestions that they know what I think or what I understand or don't understand. I’m the caller Anthony from this show. Some of the comments I’ve read about my call illustrate that most of you don’t understand how indoctrination works and how much stronger indoctrination becomes when family bonds are utilized by religion to reinforce the beliefs. My story isn’t unique, and part of the reason I shared what I did is so that other people in similar situations can see they aren’t alone. The comments saying I was ‘annoying’ and that I should ‘just get over it’ don’t encourage anyone that is trying to fully escape and detach from religion find an accepting community that is able to exercise a bit of understanding and compassion. The toxicity levels here are through the roof and only hinder the atheist movement. Thanks.

While I understand your frustration, please keep in mind this is a social media platform. Social media (particularly anonymous ones like this) are going to have a toxic tendency. You're right, indoctrination can lay deep roots, and most people are not aware of the philosophical fallacies and psychological biases involved. It takes hard work to get past our intuitions, and this is the case for everyone not just theists. Try not to be too discouraged by the trolls.

Yes. Many of us totally understand the trials of breaking from indoctrination. I think calling and laying it out for comment shows strength. Some people want to tear down those who make them feel weak by comparison. It's not personal. But it's also, yes, toxic and undesirable. And a shame. If you'd like to ask questions in the comments, you'll likely find several honest and compassionate folk to engage with. The others will go quiet when left unaddressed.

You're right, I don't understand indoctrination, much less how it interacts with "family bonds". But plenty of people do, and I'm sure you will find them if you keep looking. Your story can help people, and I encourage you to keep sharing it, but I would remind you that plenty of us are tired of the deconversion stories, tired of waiting for the world to acknowledge the obvious, tired of coddling those who whine about how terrible religion has been to them. Because, yeah, we know. I'm not trying to justify anyone being mean to you, but people get frustrated and let it out sometimes. Luckily you don't need validation from anyone. Good luck to you.

Oh this was the one about what to do with religious family members. I mean help them recover using baby steps, but if they aren't open to questions (Plus I notice you haven't raised any more here) then I'd probably lessen the times with them. You need to be fully aware. They believe you are demonized or going to Christain Hell for their claimed Jesus sins! Or annihilation or basically not allowed in their claimed heaven! This is their beliefs of you. It's not warm loving family atmosphere when the proposed demon possessed person walks in. Lol. Yes help them in all manner of different styles. But eventually I can't see such a relationship being close with such horrific beliefs of them. My in laws were very wealthy. They said: We'll give you a house (wow) but I had to rent it at a cheap rate. IF you bring your 2 young kids to church each week. I did actually t think about it overnight. I mean we really needed a house, and this one was even near the beach! They owned 5 houses! The next day I came back with my answer. NO, I cannot sell off my kids minds to own (kinda) a house. I decline your offer. My little kids are now adults. One has a Bachelor of Psychology and is finally getting a government job with mental health work. My son is a Manager in charge of a logistics warehouse. Both are openly atheist. They did fine. Mind you not me, but that's because I became a fulltime single parent and lost my career and any finance or ironically stable housing but that's irrelevant.

Before getting into the weeds with reincarnation, I'd need a simple bit of arithmetic explained first. There are some 7 billion people on this planet. Only a few centuries back, there wasn't even 1 billion people. Hopefully, you can immediately see the arithmetical problem here. If "souls" (or "most basic awareness", if you prefer, but I'll just use "soul" as a catch-all term for whatever it is that's being reincarnated) are re-used, then where did the extra 6 billion "souls" come from? And if new "souls" can, in fact, be created - to make up those numbers - then what's to say that a new "soul" isn't created each and every time, and therefore there is, in fact, no re-use of "souls" at all? More over, there have been points in history - and there could be again - where the numbers actually reduce. There have been population bottlenecks. So we can imagine that, say, an asteroid strikes the Earth and kills off many people - both directly from the impact and also from the subsequent climatic change - so that there's now, again, only some 1 billion people on the planet. But, at one point, there were 7 billion "souls" and now there's only 1 billion of them. So where did the other 6 billion go? Are they sitting in "soul storage" somewhere, just waiting for there to be enough physical bodies for them to inhabit? That is, it works both ways. We not only have to arithmetically consider "souls" being created - for numbers to go up - but we also have to consider the notion of "souls" being destroyed - for the numbers to potentially go down again (which might not have happened at any time during our lives, as population has been rising, but there have historically been points in time where it went down too). And if creation of new souls is possible (and maybe the destruction of old souls too) then, besides asking where the evidence for any of this is, what would be the functional purpose of the "soul re-use" of reincarnation anyhow? It's not, we know, the retention of memories or anything like that, as every human baby has to always re-learn how to speak their native language, re-learn how to walk, how to control their bodily functions even. We can see, with every new baby, that nothing functionally useful is ever retained from one "run" at life to the next, so if "soul re-use" is going on, then to what purpose? How could we tell the difference? And, by Occam's Razor, the simplest way to do the accounting here is to imagine that "souls" - or consciousness - is created as an emergent property of a physical brain and that when that physical brain stops functioning, the "souls" / consciousness is destroyed. Then we have no accounting problems whatsoever. No problems in explaining how 1 billion souls could become 7 billion souls - they are created new every time - and no problems explaining how 7 billion souls could potentially go back to only being 1 billion souls, without having to invent any form of "soul storage" for the extraneous souls to potter about in, waiting for a new physical body to inhabit. And that second one could prove a big problem, if "souls" cannot be destroyed either. As we can imagine that humanity spreads out to new planets and then there's, say, 24 billion people, spread out across various star systems. But then, in time, these "colonies" meet tragedy and humanity is reduced to a single planet again, with only 2 billion people. Where are the other 22 billion souls exactly? And what if this never restores ever again? That, in fact, in the course of time, humanity goes extinct. That there are zero people left. Then we've got 24 billion "souls" with absolutely nowhere for them to go. Okay, maybe a human "soul" doesn't have to come back as a human "soul" the next time. Maybe you reincarnate as a cockroach or a stag or a dog. But, hey, in this mechanism, why would there be a locality of reference? Maybe when I come back, I come back as an alien from the planet Splogg in the Andromeda galaxy. Like, can a "most basic consciousness" come back in any form of life whatsoever? Implicitly, there's some kind of "soul transport" going on, as babies are not born at the exact same location that someone died. If there is such a transport, then what's its extents? Like, could my "soul" reincarnate in the body of some alien lifeform way out there, beyond the whole observable universe? What's the distance of this transport? What's the mechanism of this transport? Is it bounded or not? So perhaps a solution to the accounting problem is to suggest that, in the whole overall universe, there is, in fact, always a set amount of life in the universe. That it's somehow "zero sum". If humanity is wiped out on planet Earth, then there's somewhere else, somewhere in the wide universe, where there's 7 billion alien babies about to be born. But perhaps you're beginning to see the theme running through this. To deal with the accounting problem, we've necessarily had to invent a transport of potentially infinite distance, we've now got to introduce a new "zero sum" mechanism that forever keeps the overall numbers exactly the same. And that bites into things like "free will" or the chaotic nature of natural disasters as, in this model, there could not be anything random about any of it. Deaths and births would have to exactly coordinate perfectly, everywhere throughout the whole universe. And we have to start admitting ideas like the fact that you don't come back as a human or a horse or a rabbit or any earthly creature, you come back as a Sploggenite from the planet Splogg in some galaxy on the other side of the universe. Because why would this "soul" mechanism only stick to our planet? There'd be no reason given for that. And then, finally, all this immense complication apparently serves no purpose anyway. As nothing tangible seems to be retained from one "run" to the next. If I die and end up in some baby, then that baby won't have any recollection of any of my memories or anything. So we've gone through all this immense complication for, apparently, no reason whatsoever - as the end result is indistinguishable from the notion that, you know, "souls" / consciousness is just created afresh each time and then perishes each time as well. Nothing is gained by this. If I retain absolutely nothing from the innumerable "past lives" I supposedly once lived, then what was the point of recycling my "soul"? It's all extremely complicated and then results in absolutely no difference whatsoever to either the religious "Afterlife" model - souls are created, but cannot be destroyed - or, even more simply, a consciousness is an emergent property of the physical brain, so it's both created and destroyed along with the physical mechanism that houses it, with there being neither an "afterlife" nor any "reincarnation". But that latter one requires no additional mechanisms. No need for any "transport" for the soul. No accounting problems, where the numbers of souls rise or fall. No need for any "soul storage" in an afterlife or some kind of "limbo" where you await to be re-inserted into some new physical body. These claims not only require evidence. They require evidence of a whole raft of additional mechanisms. They depend on a whole system of mechanisms to operate. When a physical body is gone, then how does the "soul" get to a new body? If there are no available physical bodies at that moment in time, where do these "souls" hang out in the meantime? If souls cannot be destroyed, then where does this seemingly infinite "soul storage" exist? And what would be the point of that? And what are souls made of, because we'd require an infinite source of that resource to keep creating them and never giving back to the pile. This is really not solving nor explaining anything. It's trying to dodge the inevitability of death, with layers upon layers of complication, in an attempt to bury the inconvenience. If we pile enough dirt onto the problem, then we won't have to see that it exists anymore. But the thing is, though "out of sight" might mean "out of mind", it doesn't mean "out of existence". The problem is still there under that pile of dirt, even if we've hidden it, so we don't have to think about its inconvenience anymore.
