The argument boiled down to "We don't know how life began, therefore there must be an intelligent designer (ie magic fairy)". On the other hand we don't know where the magic fairy came from, therefore we'll just make up that it always existed and didn't need a designer/creator. Mmm - I wonder where the flaw in that is!

It is mind boggling how Johnathan is a teacher and seems to be smart but every point of his call is filled with nonsense. In his debate with Matt his entire case is that claims are evidence. Nothing he says can be backed up. His faith complaint was just crying. All the faith used on the show is used correctly, especially since Matt gets specific with callers. Everytime a caller says faith they use it when there is no evidence. Matt and other hosts further elaborate and talk about it with evidence. None of the hosts ever use the word. They ask for evidence. When callers don't have evidence they say they use faith at that point. On the show, the word faith is always discussed and hosts always clarify the meaning. Johnathan, like other complainers, hear the word and ignore the context in which it's being discussed. Then they call in accusing atheists of using the word wrong. It's such a shame that people in Johnathan position pick apart things like that and use such obviously flawed reasoning. Matt clarified how faith is used on the show, and showed how it's accurate to the callers point. He also agreed that Johnathan definition is also correct. And every single time he got Johnathan to agree, Johnathan just repeated his complaint even though he admits the opposite. Every time Matt points out a case that faith is used in terms of evidence Johnathan agrees then just repeats his complaint that he uses it another way. It's exactly like Orange. Callers call in talking about the color orange. Johnathan calls in to bitch that Matt is wrong to use orange as a color because Johnathan and his friends only say orange when talking about fruit. Matt says both are correct. Then says that his callers usually call in to talk about color. And when they do, Matt talks to them about other colors and why color is useful and callers compare orange to blue and sometimes how it interacts with green. Then Johnathan says that's right but all his friends talk about fruit. Matt says he is also correct but Matt confirms with his callers to make sure they mean color. But Johnathan just keeps suggesting that he means fruit and just keeps complaining that Matt doesn't force callers to talk about fruit than color.

Jonathan - Dallas. "This universe is obviously fine tuned for humans", "God is more probable than natural causes", "Information requires a creator". Just stop, you're smarter than that.... I can remember making similar assertions when I was defending my inherited religion as a 12 year old creationist. It took only a few moments after my first discussion/debate with a non-believer to realise how flimsy these arguments were, it made me feel embarrassed and dishonest. This pushed me to evaluate what actual evidence I had to believe, which quickly lead to non-belief... People like Johnathan need to be honest with themselves. Stop grasping at straws to rationalise your beliefs and just admit you have no good reason. You can't prove God by constructing a valid argument or defining it into existence. Either you have direct evidence your God exist or you just have faith. Everything else is you lying to yourself.

Jonathan. Concern troll? Atheists use faith differently than theists? Um...duh? You think it's a virtue. Sufficient. Somehow "evidence" or as good as / better than evidence. Your go to quote: things wished for; evidence of things unseen. So...wishes. And invisible evidence.

Jonathan, like most religious apologists, wants to waste everybody’s time talking about what faith means because he realizes he can’t prove any god exists and he wants to distract attention from that uncomfortable fact. Children often do that when they want to avoid facts they don’t like.🙈

It’s so frustrating that theist can’t understand such basic principles like an analogy does NOT mean equivalency and they seem to fail to appreciate difference between observing something occurring in nature and observing something we have knowledge of being created by humans. They confuse order and patterns seen in nature via the evolutionary drive and desire we have to see pattern and order.

when theists stop behaving stupidly, the rest of us will stop calling them stupid. As Matt said, "we are all stupid about something", but in the context of an atheist program, where theists are repeatedly showing their a) inability or unwillingness to think logically for themselves or b) verbally condemning anyone who does not fall into line with their ideologies.

The thing with molecular biology stuff like protein folding and DNA sequence composition is, people always seem to suggest that there is only this one feasible state and everything else doesn't work, so it's super unlikely that it just entered that state naturally, but that's simply not true. Evolution, including molecular evolution, largely is a trial and error process where many things work but are constantly superceded by the more economic and more feasible alternatives arising as a consequence of recombination and mutation. We even know that, typically, many amino acids within a protein can be switched and the protein still remains functional. Also, protein folding is determined by the primary sequence and it's interaction with the external milieu, so there aren't endless possible folding states for that specific protein that can be realized within the cell.

Jonathan: wants to discuss how atheists use the "faith" differently than theists do Also Jonathan: equivocates 2 very different usages of the word. "faith" in your wife. Faith in God. So theist...using the term differently than he did himself, moments before. Sounds the same. But one relates to its existence at all. And the other to whether a person who exists is sexually exclusive. And, if he had specified what the husband was having faith in ...he'd call that exclusivity "being faithful". Yet a third usage.

My ears perked up with the caller Kay who was former international church of Christ (ICOC). I have been with the ICOC for the past 8 years and previously was a moderate cultural christian from a Methodist/Baptist background. The ICOC is more radical than the traditional church of Christ and has a focus on discipleship as modeled by Christ in the bible. I'm now making my way out of church leadership because of my unbelief. I still attend because of my believing wife and some great friendships. I'm now having discussions with peers and some leaders, but so far nobody has provided anything helpful for the case of God.

You actually get smarter when you make the progress from theist to atheist. Like any other knowledge brings you closer to better understanding, thus you get wiser. Many theists are smart. No doubt. And then they get even smarter when they realize they are now atheists. Whatever their path was. Why should we deny that?

When someone bases their beliefs on faith, it’s easy to find evidence that supports their beliefs. Observe reality. Make reasonable conclusions to the best of your ability.
