This is Leo Tolstoy's last novel before his death and one which was eagerly awaited after a long absence from writing fictional narratives. "Resurrection" by Leo Tolstoy tells the story of Dmitri Ivanovich Nekhlyudov, a nobleman who serves on a jury and encounters a prostitute, Katusha Maslova, who he realizes is a woman he once seduced and abandoned, leading to her current destitution. Overcome with guilt for his past actions and her unjust imprisonment, Nekhlyudov embarks on a journey of self-discovery and moral awakening, seeking redemption by attempting to right the wrongs he inflicted upon Katusha. As he navigates the corrupt and complex Russian penal system to save Katusha, Nekhlyudov confronts the inequities of society, the failures of justice, and the true meaning of mercy and forgiveness. Throughout the novel, Tolstoy delves into themes of social injustice, the flaws of institutionalized religion, and the possibility of spiritual rebirth.
