Excellent video! I must say that for 1985 the guy moved pretty easily with the bulky on-the-shoulder cam typical for back then. I remember those days and they were pretty cumbersome. The music at the end was spot-on for that era, though. Really liked the trippy wallpaper, too! Liked this very much!

Thanks for such a nice comment! I really appreciate it! Yeah, the camera movement was a little off for those old time cameras, I agree. I remember those giant contraptions. Thanks for taking the time to comment in detail. Have a great rest-of-the-day!

I really like your attention to the quality of the sound. When he says "hello", his voice echos like he's in a large indoor area like is being shown, and when he's in the crawlspace, the crawling sounds reflect like they were really recorded in a space that tight. Where did you go to record that audio? One thing that took me out of the experience a bit though is that the camera movements felt too smooth, controlled, and precise to be actually taken from a handheld camera. From what I understand, one thing that some of the other Backrooms videos creators do is take footage with a real camera and load it into a program that can model the 3D space from that video, and just save the camera motion data while replacing the modeled space with models of the Backrooms environment. I understand if you don't feel that it's worth the extra work to do that in your future videos, but I think that that might help a lot.
@Smooth_Shading
2 жыл бұрын
The vocal audio was recorded in my little home office and then I used Audacity to manipulate it. The crawling sounds, as well as the footsteps and other sound effects, were done by my good friend at MRU Studios. As far as the camera work goes, you read my mind! Throughout the creation process I kept thinking, "man, this doesn't look exactly like a handheld camera. It's not terrible, but it's a little off." I saw some videos about how to actually film a video and incorporate that into Blender using camera tracking but in the interest of time I opted for animating the camera manually. I did use a free add-on called Camera Shakify (I should add that to the description) and it works pretty well at simulating a number of different handheld camera situations but it's only as good as your use of it, which involves a little tweaking of values to get the desired effect. I'm working on a follow-up to this video and I'm trying to improve the camera work but I still haven't gotten onboard with importing actual camera tracking yet. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave such thorough feedback though. Especially letting me know the things you liked as well. Thanks again and I hope you have a great day!

@@Smooth_Shading Thanks! And no problem. I'm impressed that you can take audio that you recorded in a small room and make it so convincingly sound like it was recorded in a large room. Here's a bit more feedback about the camera movement just in case it's useful to you: • When the camera operator swings the camera around at 0:55 and 0:56, it feels like he stops at the places he points at with too much control and precision. • When he pans the camera to the right at 1:50, it feels like it's at too much of a constant speed, as if he's intentionally scanning the area between those too points, when in context it feels like he should more abruptly be switching his attention to the hallway to his right, and not caring about the space in between. • The camera operator's walking and running speeds both felt too fast to me, and when he decelerates at 1:59, it feels too abrupt, like he has no mass or momentum. • It feels like in general, there's not enough jerkiness and jolting motions to simulate the vibrations that would be transferred to the camera from the operator's footfalls and body movements. This is particularly notable when he comes to a stop after running toward the hallway that closed at 2:57. Instead of the jolts from the hard stop that one might expect, the motion felt more like a billiard ball traveling trough a viscous fluid, and then bouncing gently off of a couple soft surfaces. I like the lighting design a lot of the whole area between 1:00 and 2:00. It feels unsettling and scary. The space design of the auditorium area is great. I particularly like how the rectangular light fixtures in the ceiling extend all the way to the wall and have their corners cut off by it, and the too-short ladder hanging from the hole. Both add to the sense of the space being an attempt to copy human-built spaces by something that doesn't understand how humans actually use those spaces. ----------------- A much more subjective criticism that I'd like to offer is that story-wise, the event of the hallway to the auditorium area closing doesn't fit with my own person conception of the Backrooms. It's totally valid of course if you just have a different personal conception of it, but in my conception, a central quality of the Backrooms is that it's very alien. Like, the familiar shapes of the environment are a thin veneer over something that's incomprehensible to us. Like it contains entities that might be intelligent, but don't understand us because they're so alien, like the monster in Kane Pixel's Pitfalls video that repeats on loop the voices to the people it probably killed without seeming to understand what those voices are saying. In contrast, that wall closing seems like an intentional move by some being with god powers observing the camera operator with the intent of herding them in a certain direction, like it has a motivation we can understand to herd him in a certain direction, and understands that closing that wall will produce that effect. It feels too much like an intentional choice by a being that's understandable and relatable to us, and not in keeping with the alieness that's such a central trait of the Backrooms (in my conception). It also feels perhaps a bit too much like whatever consciousness is there is focused on the human, instead of it feeling like a wilderness where everything is doing it's own thing, and the human might happen just to run into something and get its attention. Again, that's just my conception of the Backrooms, and power to you if you'd like to express a different conception of it. ----------------- Hopefully this critique is helpful to you. Overall, your work is great, and I look forward to your next video. Have a great day!
@Smooth_Shading

@@RobinClaassen This is probably the single most helpful comment I've ever received. I'm impressed with how detailed and spot-on your critique is. And you delivered it with grace and diplomacy and still complimented on aspects you liked. And I really liked the analogy of a billiard ball moving through a viscous fluid. Thanks for taking the time to be so pleasant and thorough. I hope to improve my camera work as much as possible in the next video (I still might not get it perfect but hopefully some improvement) and your insights gave me a wealth of crucial info for doing that. I also really like your conception of the backrooms. As soon as I learned about the idea of the backrooms, it resonated with me as a space reminiscent of a dream or a nightmare, or a mixture of the two. Sometimes calming, sometimes unsettling, sometimes threatening. I liked the thought that the environment itself was the antagonist and messed with a person the way our own subconscious does in our nightmares. A feeling that the place itself was toying with you, trying to break you, and the manifestations of that threat were largely tied to your own fears, or based on dreams/nightmares you may have already had. The environments would look like places you'd been as a child or at some point in life when you were impacted by the strangeness of a particular space. I really liked the idea that the backrooms can mean slightly different things to different people. I also knew that there was a general established lore to it all and that if I took too much creative freedom it might not work within the version of the backrooms that the fans in general agree with. Setting out to make some backrooms content now, I often think, "What are other peoples expectations of the backrooms and should I play to those expectations or surprise them?" Hearing your thoughts on what the backrooms is to you is incredibly helpful and insightful. It gives me great ideas and a better understanding of other conceptions of it. Thanks again for taking the time to elaborate on that. Overall, thanks for everything. I really appreciate the critique and the compliments, and most of all your time. Have a great day my friend.

WhiIe I do like your video. My only issue would be that I (me personally) picture the Backrooms as the kind of place where you turn your back and find that the place you were from is not the place you were from. I can't remember where I saw the video of the person who ran into a dead-end, turned around, ran into another dead end, and then proceeded in the direction of the first dead-end, but that is what I picture: a path that changes behind you as if the geometry of reality is of a higher dimension than you are accustomed to. It doesn't change belligerently, but it changes as if the geometry is incomprehensible. But that's me, and I've had a lot of vodka. What do you think?
@Smooth_Shading
2 жыл бұрын
I like that idea, that you don't actually see the geometry in motion. You just turn around and discover that something has changed. It seems like it might be stranger and cooler that way. In retrospect, I kind of think I should've done it like that. And I'm working on Part 2 and it has some more of that moving walls stuff in it but I'm too far along in the process to change it now. Originally, I liked the idea that the Backrooms themselves seemed malicious and perhaps the geometry could shift and change before your eyes but it might be more cerebral if happened when you weren't looking. Nevertheless, thanks very much for taking the time to watch the video and then leave a nice and detailed comment, sharing your thoughts and ideas. I really appreciate that. It helps me to consider what other people think of the Backrooms. Well, have a great day my friend.

I don't know. Maybe the dog would instinctively avoid that area, sensing the tear in reality's fabric with his keen K9 senses. Maybe only people can end up glitching into the backrooms and not animals. Or maybe the instant after the dude clipped through the ground, the rift closed and no one could ever clip through that area again. It's hard to say exactly how The Backrooms works. We'll have to do more research.
