"The Drapes of Roth", one of the greatest puns in history, brings the song to a halt for an ovation.

Absolutely. Mount Rushmore material. I love the way he pauses to emphasize it. He knows its coming and can't wait to deliver it. Crowd has no idea. They go wild.

The song contains many plays on words. "Harry Lewis" is a play on "Hallelujah" and "The Drapes of Roth" is a play on "The Grapes of Wrath." The whole song is sung to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." The refrain "Glory, glory Harry Lewis" puns "Glory, glory hallelujah." And since Harry Lewis worked as a velvet cutter working for Irving Roth, one could assume he made drapes (curtains). Therefore their warehouse would store "the drapes of Roth." And The Battle Hymn of the Republic contains "the grapes of wrath." There may be other puns as well. The song is pure genius! Hope this helps!

Always loved this song! Taught it many years ago to my then grammar-school aged step-daughter. Went to 1 of her Catholic school functions where 'Battle Hymn of the Republic' was sung. Could not find a hole small enough to hide in when she sang "Glory, glory Harry Lewis" at the top of her lungs! Am STILL reminded of it to this day!

Ahh, but you must have made the day for some ardent Allen Sherman fans in the audience, who probably recall that concert with glee, while everyone else has forgotten it.

As a kid, we used to listen to the album My Son the Folk Singer. I can still remember the words to most of the songs. My fave has to be Sir Greenbaum’s Madrigal. One Xmas eve service the organist was playing Greensleeves and my whole family start quietly singing that song. I have the album in my iTunes music. Will always love it.

I'm singing you the ballad Of a great man of the cloth His name was Harry Lewis And he worked for Irving Roth He died while cutting velvet On a hot July the 4th But his cloth goes shining on Glory, glory Harry Lewis Glory, glory Harry Lewis Glory, glory Harry Lewis His cloth goes shining on Oh Harry Lewis perished In the service of his Lord He was trampling through the warehouse Where the drapes of Roth are stored He had the finest funeral The union could afford And his cloth goes shining on Glory, glory Harry Lewis Glory, glory Harry Lewis Glory, glory Harry Lewis His cloth goes shining on Although a fire was raging Harry stood by his machine And when the firemen broke in They discovered him between A pile of roasted Dacron And some french fried gabardine His cloth goes shining on Glory, glory Harry Lewis Glory, glory Harry Lewis Glory, glory Harry Lewis His cloth goes shining on

Loved Allan Sherman--my parents had his three hit albums (folk singer, celebrity, nut) and I would play them over and over. At age 6 or 7, I didn't understand the real humor in most of these parodies as this was the first time I was hearing the songs. As so many others have mentioned, it was later in life when I discovered the original songs that I laughed because the parodies then made sense and were hilarious.

This great parody, that was taken from the original great song "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". shows that he was a master of parodies. and how great Allen Sherman was for sure. however I could be a little biased because of my namesake.

For those of us who are younger and/or fashion-unconscious... who or what was Irving Roth? Something in the fabrics line, I gather, but my search engine keeps turning up references to someone who doesn't seem connected to this story.
