Everyone praises Lost Together // Lost Forever and All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us, but the real break through for them was Daybreaker. When These Colours Don’t Run came out, they really started gaining traction. I see the following two albums as just continuing Daybreaker’s momentum. the people calling this "butt rock" really don't understand what made butt rock what it was. butt rock was an edgy guitar version of what pop music was already doing, maybe with moodier themes in the lyrics, with macho bros as the frontmen. it filled a niche of people who wanted to be a little edgy but still have something that wasn't too offensive. that said, this isn't to denigrate the genre, just to contrast it with what this new architects song is: more mature, not really in line with the current pop formula and lyrical themes, and definitely not something you can play beer pong to.

The reality is, for me, that every time I try to listen to that record I just can't stand the melody choices and how repetitive it gets. My issue wasn't with the style, it was with the song writing. I was very glad when Daybreaker came out, but it felt a little all over the place production wise. I think All the elements came together on LF,LT, following it.

Not mention how metaphorically the lyrics can take on different meanings depending on what’s going on in their lives. They are about writing from the heart and what they’re feeling which is what what writing music is about. The metal core scene became flooded with bands that took on pop trends rather then the true meaning. It’s not about writing what you think people want to hear because others bands work extremely hard to achieve it. That’s why so many bands sound the same. My true feeling is Architects will always have timeless music kinda like Pink Floyd with material that will always be relatable because it was written for themselves. What makes fans is because of that and it draws you in because it’s very personal. Write what you feel not what you think people want hear.

I love your breakdown of Architects, bud. I agree with the Botch/Norma Jean comparisons. It is uncanny. All I can say is just wait for it/them. Keep your ears (and eyes) peeled for some SERIOUS shit later on down the line. Seeing Adam Christianson play with A Textbook Tragedy back in the day at a local basement show made me realize how truly versatile a guitarist he is. He was casually playing jazz-fusion riffs over the odd-timed beats Nick Yacyshyn was frenetically laying down, and seemed strangely distant while he immaculately shredded those notes, as if they were nothing. NOTHING! It was a sight to behold, and one I'll NEVER forget. I'm glad that Bill Crook found success with Spiritbox, Nick Yacyshyn joined Sumac, and so on and so forth, etc. I wish those kooky Canucks the very best as they pursue their "zen". Thanks for hanging out with me on the front porch, dudes. And thanks for turning me on to Ion Dissonance. It's been an enjoyable experience throughout the years. 🤘😎

New single is great, but that turned into a pretty comprehensive summary of everything I missed in the 2010s! I basically got into Periphery around their second album, stuck with my tried and tested death/black/blackened death/prog metal and more straight up djent, got into my very favourite band ever (the Algorithm), and completely missed what was happening with heavy music aside from that stuff from like 2012 on until like late last year. I got into Architects fairly recently when Sam Carter did some guest vocals for the Final Fantasy XIV soundtrack, and really have your and Nik Nokturnal's streams/videos to thank for getting me hugely up to speed on what's been happening with heavy music while I wasn't paying as much attention. I got introduced to Architects in high school with the song These Colours Don’t Run. It was very clear from the lyrics they had something to say. I forgot about them until All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us came out. That record has so much raw emotion and power in it. The lyrics about trying to save the world while dying. Then Holy Hell came out. They evolved, best riff off the record is Mortal After All. The lyrics have call backs all the way through it to AOGHAU and Lost Together//Lost Forever. And they dive into trying to continue as a band without Tom. Then Those Who Wish To Exist comes out and it’s all about the issues we have on earth. They have always been voicing social issues without being condescending about it. Look at the lyrics to Discourse is Dead they take shots at both sides of the political spectrum and how it fucks up everything for everyone. I love these guys, I love their messages, I love that they keep playing music after losing Tom. I want them to keep going and going. I love the new direction and I’m excited for more. Sam Carter is a hell of a vocalist, Dan Searle is a monster on the drums. Josh Middleton writes some of the best riffs. Adam Christianson and Ali Dean add the perfect energy and do subtle things in the background to make their music better than everything else out there.

Hey Finn, I know you hate this style, but it would be cool to take a look back at the 2010-2011 djent explosion. Long before * everyone * was doing it, there was a series of albums that truly defined the meshuggah-core djent sound before Architects jumped on it and took it to the stratosphere. The albums that kickstarted the sound (I believe) go as follows: Periphery - Periphery TesseracT - One Monuments - Gnosis Animals As Leaders - Animals As Leaders Elitist - Caves Northlane - Discoveries Erra - Impulse Volumes - Via Born of Osiris - The Discovery Vildhjarta - måsstaden Uneven Structure - Februus If it weren’t for these records, the style wouldn’t have taken over modern metal in the way it did. In the couple years afterwards, we got seminal metalcore records like Lost Forever, Singularity, Wolves Within and Matriarch. After 2017, it definitely started to stagnate. Not like we don’t get good djentcore sometimes, obviously Spiritbox blew up for a reason, but all this Wage War, Hollow Front, Fit For A King and Polaris-core is certainly getting old. Many of the best bands of that initial era have long since moved on to create their own sound. Still, it’s worth looking over this early period because there’s some serious quality in there.

This song does it for me though, it has a great punk pace with the typical Architects intricacies. If this is what a next album will sond like, I have to say I am excited. They were always a band that made a bigger change on one album and then perfected it on the next one.

The Here and Now is a fantastic album, I've always loved it. Admittedly it's not as good as All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us, but really fucking catchy. I'm seeing Architects in two weeks from now in Cardiff. Can't wait.

@@GhostHack21 Cool, I've seen them twice before. Motorpoint a couple of years ago and went to that one at the Ally Pally. Awesome.

I believe that the sound and production/aesthetic that bands like Periphery and Architects formed is so specific that you can't say that you're influenced by them without making music that feels almost like a direct ripoff. Honestly, I'm tired of hearing Gojira, Architects and TesseracT in modern metal bands. Metalcore is falling into a niche. Not that it didn't back in the melodic metalcore AILD days or the mathcore days, but perhaps the fact that I feel indifferent about the Architects-core sound in the first place pisses me off about this situation more. Thank god bands like Loathe and Silent Planet actually do something with these influences

12:30 I just recently ran into this myself after getting omicron, like I survived something a lot of people died from. Granted I’m also 28 and in good health but still it’s a human experience. I had a similar “holy shit I’m gonna die” moment and it’s taken months after for me to become somewhat at peace with that. Living for everyday no matter what and not taking anything for granted anymore🤘🏼

Good take, agree about the respect thing. Even if not a fan of their particular sound at least it is indeed genuine

What makes something "butt rock"? I kind of get it, but not entirely.

I'm trying to figure this out too. There are bands that fit my understanding of it (FFDP, for instance), and other, er... "butt rock accusations" that leave me scratching my head a bit. In those cases, it seems to be like... melody? Too many cleans, not enough rarrs?

Architects never went butt rock, their last album is definitely more accessible hard rock/metal but still feels pretty distant from bands like Seether, Nickleback or Three Days Grace. Excellent band and without a doubt some of the best song writers in modern metal. I feel like Architects do such a great job displaying genuine emotion through their music and can often feel missing from a lot of modern metal.

Oh, throwing it out there. The Here And Now was a solid album for what it was but the reason they stopped that style and went back to more metalcore was because Sam said he felt as though the band lost its balls. So it is weird to see them go back into metalcore because they didn't care for the direction they were going and then later move back into more metal-rock. Still, it's their band. Let them do what they want.

Love your videos man and as a longtime Architects fan myself from the Ruin days this is a personal favourite. Great to show a couple of snippets of back catalogue - the here and now was a grower but it’s a great album. I agree on them being so authentic and way before Tom’s passing the feeling was always there which is why I think it hit the fan base so hard. Hollow Crown and Lost Forever my favourite albums, always passion, always ernest 🙌🏻

Something people continues against the change of Architects, but they have more and more and more new fans around the world, they are happy ,and they have more money in the bank. All the people have different tastes. END.

Some people say "the band Evolved." Others would say they changed into a more mainstream and broad, less signature sound. Its all perspective.
