Second Lt. George S. Patton, accompanied by eight soldiers and two civilian guides, approaches San Miguelito Ranch on a foraging mission near Dublán, Mexico, in May 1916. He positions two carloads of soldiers and a guide at the southern wall around the hacienda and its two gates. He and the remaining two soldiers park their car northwest of the compound. As they make their way east along the low north wall, heading toward the big arch of the main gate, three horsemen dash out of the hacienda into the courtyard and head southeast, running right into the Americans stationed there. The Mexicans wheel around and charge toward Patton, but Patton shoots one rider and wounds another, who later dies at the hands of one of Patton’s guides. Patton shoots the third rider and kills him. The shoot-out gains international headlines, and Patton is dubbed the “Bandit Killer,” paving the way for him to accompany Gen. John “Black Jack” Pershing to Europe the next year in World War I. Patton made his mark in World War II as a general in North Africa, Sicily, and Europe. #wildwest #history #cowboy
