Many years ago, my first collecting interest were Barlows. I had about 300 of them and eventually sold the entire collection. My favorite was an appaloosa bone Barlow by Case but I would carry a single blade barlow because it was "easier in the pocket." Thanks for this video.

Fantastic video, i carry two barlows as my daily carry. A back pocket grand daddy barlow with white smooth bone handles for rough work, and a nicer boker stag single blade barlow as my front pocket knife for finer work. No one gets scared of traditional slip joints like they do of tactical knives.

ISLANDOUTDOORS1 I just found two in my grandfathers garage.....no idea the age, but I believe one is a standard size and the other is a Daddy? size. I have found so much old stuff.....tools, saws, etc.. but I am really impressed with the amount of things that still work after 30+ years.

I have the hardware store/gas station one too. Imperial Ireland like the clip point you showed first. Beasty fishing and camping knife that i actually used in self defense back in the 90’s on a nyc subway. Statute of limitations probably expired so I can now talk about it. Slicey slicey. Stays in my fishing kit. Cheap as f but good metals used and doesn’t have a spot of rust even tho i never oiled it. My edc is a handmade high carbon fix blade full tang handmade by my buddy Chris at Not Nice Knives. But the Barlow would make an excellent edc scalpel. Love it! I appreciate your video!

I always loved the Barlow knife. I bought a bunch of them from a flea market dealer and I used to give them to friend or guys who would do some work for me, air still have a bunch and started buying more recently.. I still have some Colonial with printed scrimmage an the handle but I also have some from China nice knives and 1 Pakistani knife. I don't have anymore Irish knives though.. I used to sell knives on e-mail bay but not for awhile. I still like the older manual opening knives best.

Great video, and fantastic discussion of the history of these knives. I remember having a few of these as a kid. It seemed like they were everywhere back then. They were available at the camp store at Camp Barstow, my boy scout summer camp in SC. I'm sure mine were all Imperial knives. I need to see if I can find one or two in good shape. Thanks for posting this.

Even the 'rough and ready' ones are pretty darned good. Remember, it is meant to be a working knife, not a 'safe queen.'
@jelkel25

@@southerncomfort7490 They were designed and made for different times. No good taking a flimsy thing with you to Boreal Canada or outback Australia. I have 2/3 older knives that have been put into very occasional use because the person who gave me the knife is no longer with us or I've had it so long I couldn't stand to lose it but no safe queen's.
@southerncomfort7490

@@jelkel25 Yes my friend but the Boreal in Canada and the Australian outback was conquered by men with a Barlow, Trapper, Muskrat or a Congress. True, they probably also had a fixed blade. Those who passed through the Cumberland Gap had what was called a 'Butcher's knife.' It resembled something similar to the MOD Survival knife of today. However, the vast majority of tasks were carried out with the aforementioned knives. These worked effectively for very active men well into the 20th century. President Lincoln, an outdoorsman who lived on the frontier, died with a Congress Knife in this pocket. In contrast, most of the knife purchasers today, armed with automatic knives, super steels and skull crusher pommels, never get further outdoors than the edge of the sofa. Action for them is finding enough 'AA' batteries to carry on their game of 'Call of Duty.' As they say in the Regiment: 'Light is Right'. As a certain James Bond was later to say "some times the old ways are the best."
