Your practice buddy may not be good managing his distance to the ball, but his forehand top spin stroke is a thing of beauty.

nice instruction as always but may I ask what is the best grip for drop shot? I can make drop shot only with my forehand using underspin and from right to left angles only plus need to change grip to continental. maybe I need to practice more to hit more targets.

Still use continental/chopper grip as per a slice shot. Tomas explains the difference with the stroke but that's the same.
@feeltennis

You should use continental grip. The wrist gets into an awkward position if you play a drop shot with a forehand grip. Of course, with massive amount of practice and good feel you can make some drop shots like that too. Otherwise we need to change the grip quickly from the forehand to the continental if you decide to play a drop shot.

Thanks for your videos Thomas, they are very useful, you could support us by making a video of how to run (technique, body and racket position) from the bottom of the court to drop shots?, I have a daughter who competes in the ITF circuit and it is a topic that we want her to improve,Thank you!

Keep the racket in front of you and just run, like you want to catch the ball with hand. You can do drills like that where you throw a short ball and have the player catch it with the hand. Then they will realize it's the most natural way to reach the ball without any instruction. Then in the same way run for the ball with the racket and then just push it deep. Of course the player must very quickly judge whether they will barely get to the ball and will have to push it or whether they will get there in time and be able to play a normal topspin stroke. In that case they just play the ball with a short backswing which will likely happen automatically.

@@weixiangwong2227 actually I found out that I'm already using the continental grip unintentionally when doing some slices on the court. But anyways, thanks mate.

@@najaryassine7850 No worries, as Tomaz highlighted above, if you are careful about the racquet face and weight transfer you should be good.
