I never used fate dice before. I had some the whole time in a dice tube. Thanks for posting this video.

Normally I'm not a math nerd, but in RPG's it is good to know your chances rolling a certain number. Especially in Fate where you are dealing with unusal dice. So to roll a certain number or higher in Fate your chances are: +4 = 1.3% +3 or greater = 6.2% +2 or greater = 18.5% +1 or greater = 38.5% +0 or greater = 61.7% -1 or greater = 81.4% -2 or greater = 93.7% -3 or greater = 98.6% -4 or greater = 100% So if players are confronted with a challenge to beat a number 2 higher than their skill, math alone tells them that the better start to invoke aspects or start creating advantages and free invocations beforehand as your chances to roll a +3 or better is 6.2%.. In Fate you really need to work with aspects, you can't just rely on having a lucky dice roll.

I am watching the videos in order and I wonder if you ever talk about the Gold, Silver and Bronze rules in FATE? I think they would be perfect topics for a brief discussion of "the Basics".

*2D9* As I type this, I am collecting the materials needed to convert two nine-sided dice into fate-compatible dice. The trick will be that each singular nine-sided dice wil have the results of two fate six-sided/three-sided dice in place of the numbers 1 through 9. Here are mine, before prepping. i.imgur.com/uYal62a.jpg You can order nine-sided dice from Shapeways here; www.shapeways.com/product/B36ZWW56B/d9-sphere-dice *D20 & Coinflip* Another way you could do this, which I will also do, is taking a blank 20-sided dice and a coin. For the blank 20-sided dice, write the following; "4" one time. "3" two times. "2" five times. "1" eight times. "0" four times (this is not a typo). Or leave blank. In conjunction, flip coin or a token with a plus and minus on each side to decide if the outcome is positive or negative. This method will give an imperfect simulation of rolling a 4dF. This way, rolling a +4 or -4 is twice as likely(from 1,23% to 2,5%), but the rest of the results are almost perfectly in line with fate dice. Not to mention that there's some tension to be had in knowing the result of one dice before the result of the other.

How do you handle opposed rolls where both the GM and the Players can spend Fate points to influence the result after rolling? It seems like the most logical thing to do is to just not reveal either result until both parties are satisfied with what they've got, but since both parties have to (Or should be doing it, at the least) declare their Fate point usage, this seems like it could easily lead to blind escalation where both sides "have" to spend their Fate points when they see their opponent doing it, just in case it puts them ahead. Appreciate any advice.

+Blink Penguin : I let it play out as normal, if the PCs want a roll that badly then they will spend fate points for it; as the GM I (as per the normal rules) have 1FP per player, per encounter so I only have a limited pool and I rarely use more than a single FP a roll so generally (for my group) I've got four rolls a scene where the NPCs will do a bit better, and some of these will simply be used to cancel out abysmal rolls.

+Red Dice Diaries I guess I'm used to systems where you know that you've failed before you choose to use the re-roll option (IKRPG, 40k)... I guess with Fate the dice roll makes less difference to the total. It's probably best to just let it all ride and have no one declare results until they're happy with what they've got. Thanks.

why do I keep rolling -4?!!
@RedDiceDiaries

+Nikolaj Lepka : I'm afraid that's a question I can't answer, but with a little invoking of your aspects and fate point expenditure you can either add to that result or risk a re-roll.

Red Dice Diaries I was just idly rolling my dice and I think I rolled -4 eight times, never rolled anything higher than +2... Am I cursed?
@RedDiceDiaries

Nikolaj Lepka: If you are then I suggest you embrace the curse and make liberal use of self-compels to gain yourself some fate points, helping to keep the story interesting and also somewhat balancing out the unfortunate dice rolls.

Thank you so much for doing these vids. This one is a bit muddled however. You titled this "the basics, rolling Fate dice". You sort of talked about the rolls, how to make cheap fudge dice, named, but didn't really discuss the four actions, you really didn't say what you think "the Basics" are etc. I would suggest revisiting this one and concentrate strictly on one thing. In the case of this video I'd recommend just fudge dice and rolling. You could talk about the probabilities for each result. How do make cheap dice, but leave the actions for another video. Maybe even discuss passive opposition and the probabilities of overcoming specific difficulties. You took less than 10 minutes to take a swipe at a lot of different topics and it ended up ending without anything to really "hang my hat on".

I got one question here if a player succeed with advantage mean the GM need to create a temporary aspect for that player?
@RedDiceDiaries
6 жыл бұрын
If a PC succeeds with style then they gain some advantage in addition to succeeding at whatever task they are undertaking, this could be represented by a temporary aspect or boost but doesn't necessarily have to be.
@sin9860

Red Dice Diaries Actually what is a boost? A temporary aspect that is free?
@RedDiceDiaries
6 жыл бұрын
Boosts are a transient aspect, you get them when trying to create an advantage but don't succeed well enough or as an added benefit to succeeding with style. You can invoke a boost for free, but once you do so the aspect goes away.
