After I saw the Batman in theatre’s. I sat outside the theatre and just rehashed what I had just scene. It’s more than a film it’s the complete experience. I love when a film has enough faith in itself and it’s audience, not to hold our hand. It’s one of the pinnacles of writing. “Show, don’t tell.” And as a writer myself. I respect when a movie goes through these lengths. To really understand it’s source material.
@FOURBEEZ

I completely agree. I love how nuanced and complex this movie is, in terms of both its characters and themes. You're right, most movies are just that, movies- but The Batman truly feels like an experience, it transcends what most movies will ever do. Thank you so much for such an awesome comment!!

I share your enthusiasm. On the other hand, I think there's something to be said for occasionally telling. My only gripe with the film is how silent the climax is. We can put together what's happening, but I felt like I wanted a little more narrative definition. It would have been nice for someone to spell out the danger of the power generator, what would happen if it connected with the water. I know what would happen, but sometimes, it's nice for characters to acknowledge what they understand. Two things were happening in the scene: 1) Batman was realizing that his campaign to punish Gotham had led to catastrophe, and he needed to save it. 2) his rescuing people was seen by Gotham. As it was, it was so wordless, I had to work out what Batman was responding to with the electricity. I would have liked to see people like Gordon and Bella Real clearly realize the peril before Batman swung in to stop it. It's a minor quibble, I know, but that's just my inner story editor thinking out loud.

Love how this movie basically shuts down the argument of "Snyder is trying to go for a more dark, brutal, and realistic Batman, so it's ok for Batfleck to kill people." Reeve's Batman possesses all these traits and he isn't a psycho murderer.
@FOURBEEZ
2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I was hesitant to bring this up, but I'm glad you've mentioned it. I never understood that argument, even if Snyder's reasons for altering the character were valid, he essentially created a new character that acts and feels nothing like Batman. I'm glad we got a live-action Batman from Reeves that is dark, brutal, and realistic, and yet still holds true to the character's roots :)
@matthewrocca4197
2 жыл бұрын
@@FOURBEEZ Well if we’re talking about staying true to the character’s roots, Snyder did that in spades since the earliest Detective Comics featured a Batman who kills criminals. Snyder took the character on a journey from that version of the character to the version we are more accustomed to by the end of BVS when he refuses to brand Luthor. I’d say both Reeves and Snyder captured the spirit of the character beautifully, just in different ways!

Totally agree! Aside from the “true crime” elements of the film, I think the plot line involving the Riddler’s social media is really what shocked and terrified me the most in terms of realism. I will never get tired of a video essay about THE BATMAN and, wow, this one does not disappoint. Your in-depth analysis and appreciation for this film managed to articulate so eloquently what I could not verbalize. I’ve been calling THE BATMAN a passion project but I think “confidence” is even more befitting. Everything about this film screams that: from Reeves’ compelling vision to the cast and crew’s contribution to executing said vision. I cannot, will not, pick a favorite part about THE BATMAN because to me this movie is perfect as a whole. Even though I am glad to hear that there will be a sequel, I must confess that I’d have been perfectly happy if it were a standalone. The pacing, the character development, the story, the production, the acting…..it has been a while since I left a movie theater feeling this satisfied. Lastly, your conclusion is thoughtful and poignant- any work that can bring this kind of introspection is worth our time. Glad to have come across this video and thank-you for all your effort in making and sharing it.

Nice work! I love your insights into this film. I hadn't made the connection with the subtle spur sound effect in his footsteps, but of course, my subconscious had. So when you pointed it out, I was like "THAT'S what was so familiar and evocative about that." We as Americans, and more importantly, as children of pop culture, are never too far from the cowboy myth. And as with everything else, this film toys with that myth, and then interrogates it with brutal honesty. I think something that pop culture is doing a lot now is demanding we re-evaluate our 20th century pop culture-influenced belief systems. This has the effect of polarizing audiences, entrenching those who don't want to question what they believe. This is why nostalgia is such a potent opiate in entertainment. People want the comfort of familiar pleasures. But as with any opiate, nostalgia offers diminishing returns. The same story over and over gets old, goes sour. The grim and gritty Batman has soured into a toxic, grandiose fantasy that violence itself is a force for good. I think that toxic take on Batman is exactly what this film was intended to challenge. But this brings me to your assertion that this is the definitive Batman. I share your enthusiasm for the film, but you have to take a few steps back. One reason Batman is so popular is that he has so many interpretations. This is the nature of the crowd-sourced fictional character, created story by story from thousands of different authors over decades. Everyone but the most die-hard fans dislikes most Batman stories, but has a select few that connected them to the character in a profound way. The character thrives on his variations as much as his definitions. So when you say "This is the definitive Batman," what you mean is that it's the version you personally have connected with the most. But be careful of that, because you don't want to become so attached to this very distinctive version that you're blind to the virtues of others, simply because they're different. This version of Batman was fantastic, but it's missing several elements some might consider definitive, or at least, iconic. For one, a Batman that's for adults only, to my mind, isn't definitive. And this version offers precious little thrilling adventure for kids. It's a very adult, dark, psychological thriller. For another, the very fact of the film's gritty realism precludes certain defining aspects of the character and his world. Batman's pulp origins plant him squarely in what I think of as a "weird science" world, where radioactive spiders can give you superpowers, the right (or wrong) chemical can turn you into a walking popsicle, or a goopy pile of face putty. Nolan's films had a lot of fun passing Batman's world off as the real one. This film sacrifices some of that. This Batman speaks of embodying the shadows of Gotham, but in the end, he's rarely more than a guy in bullet-proof armor and a cool mask. He doesn't use his costume to strike fear, to evoke something supernatural. That too is an iconic part of Batman that's missing here. It's a shame, because this is far and away the best Batman costume on screen. It's genuinely scary, while the latex bat suits with their molded muscles always struck me as grown men dressed as Batman toys. But I don't think this film has made a mistake. It has a particular point to make, with its particular version of Batman, and I wouldn't want it to be any other way. I just look forward to the next genuinely creative take on the character too.

I totally respect your opinion, and I'm happy you've shared it with me. I think you're right- for me, this movie checked off most, if not all of the boxes for what I consider to be Batman. This movie honestly doesn't really get any better the more I watched it. First time I dropped it because I was bored TF out of my mind and stopped by the time he meets Falcone and confronts Alfred about his father. At the second watch, I liked it more. But now........I just find it so mid. It's just a pastiche of things we've seen in Batman movies a BILLION times and that's why it bores me to death. Origin story of sorts and "super gritty and realistic" ? The overrated Nolan movies, particularly Begins. Villain has a vendetta against big Gotham names ? Mask of the Phantasm. Catwoman and Penguin ? Batman Returns, except Zoe Kravitz is as interesting as a wooden plank and the "modern audience" additions like her ambiguous relationship with her roommate/not-girlfriend or the "rich whyt peepo" rant made me roll my eyes, and while Colin Farrell is a cool actor, I'm so goddamn sick of this modern interpretation of the Penguin as a generic mobster with a funny accent. Gotham is LITTERED with mobsters they could have used and could have easily be interchangeable with this "Penguin" : Sal Valestra, Rupert Thorne, Roman Sionis before becoming Black Mask and so and so on People are heralding it because it's relatively trash free, but it doesn't do much do really earn it aside from the neo noir detective story aspect, which was admittedly the one good part about it. But on the whole, it just fails to grab me almost entirely.
