Even though I'm a bigger fan of Bruce Timm DCAU shows , I still appreciate The Batman for what it was and enjoyed it for how it reworked & tried out different/new things while still being faithful to the essence/spirit of the source material. But what I mostly enjoyed was the earlier seasons of the show & the dynamic of a rookie Batman with Detective Ethan & Yin. I wished they did more between these original characters because they really had something special & just like how BTAS success made Harley Quinn part of Batman's rogue gallery, I think both Ethan (before his transformation as CF) & Detective Yin as Batman allies in GPD could have become an interesting part of the Batman continuity. With them being the ones involved (with Commissioner Gordon assistance in later seasons) in changing GPD & removing the corruption from the inside because of Gotham's crime families influence. Like part of the reason Bruce became Batman was to help Gotham's people fight against the corruption that has taken hold of the city.

I miss this version of The Batman... i grew up with this version alongside Teen Titans that after one season of Teen Titans end, they play next season of The Batman. So when Robin appear in The Batman series, i was like "oh... this is Robin before he move to Jump City!" I like how they change the origin story for a lot of character, like how Batgirl came first before Robin, Joker having Prank as his sidekick before Harley Quinn and dont get me started on the rest of the villains... i also like how many original villain that this show make like D.A.V.E, Gearhead, Wrath and Srocth, etc... the story is amazing with how this show have The Laughing Joke and Joker use Bane's Venom to become buff, and so many amazing storyline in this show for each season...

It's worth mentioning part of the reason Ethan was made Clayface is because due to the Dark Knight Trilogy having the rights to certain villains, they weren't allowed to be used in the show, hence the reason we never see Scarecrow, Two-Face, or Ra's Al Ghul, thus they gave Ethan/Clayface a similar backstory to Two Face as a compromise. Joker was the one exception since it's basically impossible to do a batman show without the joker.

This show‘s penguin was like the original Flintheart Glomgold(the rebooted version of 2017 to be exact) -They both have a childish hatred towards another rich person( Bruce wayne and Scrooge mcduck) -They both are extremely comedic and fun to watch -They both see themself as the hero‘s greatest enemy, even though someone else has that title(The joker and Magica de spell) -And they both tried to take the hero down once and for all by forming a team of many of the hero‘s other villains( in team penguin and glomtales) I feel like the writers of ducktales took inspiration from the Batman’s penguin to make their glomgold.

I _loved_ this show. Hell, this version of Joker is still one of my favorites. I do agree with Vee Infuso that he should've stayed more distinct from the other Jokers, as his early design was honestly pretty great. My favorite moment from him still has to be from the Dracula movie, where he's dangling over the ledge, and when Batman tries to help him, he proceeds to lash out with his electric buzzer, then falls laughing... only to pause, look down at the water, and then at his still active buzzer, and then coming to the realization of how badly he just goofed before getting shocked. I also wish they didn't drop Yin from the show after she had just started warming up to Batman. Batgirl was nice, but I found myself engaged in Yin's character more.

2:54 Yeah the fights in this show were pretty epic, especially since they let both the Joker and Penguin be hyper competent fighters, though apparently the writers toned down their fighting abilities due to many people complaining that it didn't fit the characters, especially Joker to be a Kung Fu expert.
@nadrewod999

Eh, Joker's main schtick is that he's crazy and he wants to make the world laugh along with him, whether they want to or not. Give him a fighting style built around strange unpredictable movements and add in some gag weapons every now and then, and it's a fair interpretation of the character, while also being a good counter to Batman's cold methodical approach.

@@nadrewod999 completely agree! I can't understand why people where whining about it, it makes completely sense for joker to have experience in hand to hand combat, not only it fits the whole circus acrobat-clown thing but it's also a lot cooler to see Batman engaging in actual fights with his enemies, like seriously 😒 people expect a villain to just always hide behind a freaking gadget instead of having the balls to fight themselves?? This was my first introduction to Batman as a kid and was what got me into Batman growing up, even before I ever watched Batman The Animated Series or Batman: Brave and the Bold in my teen years. This show was my first introduction to Batman as a kid, and honestly, it's my favourite Batman show, and its hard to believe the show is already 20 years old. I absolutely LOVE the animation, art style and redesigns of the characters, especially Joker (one of my favourite takes on Joker), Batman, Batgirl, Robin, Mr Freeze, Firefly, Catwoman, Riddler, Killer Croc, Clayface, Man-Bat, etc... all of them had such cool, sleek and creative designs that truly made this show stand out as its own thing and that's one of the many reasons I love it so much. I really love this shows take on Batman as more laid back and mentally stable Batman that hasn't let the darkness completely overtake him as its such a refreshing change from the status quo. I also love Bruce and Alfred's relationship and how much Bruce grows as a character accepting Batgirl and adopting Robin and rheir dynamic together is truly fun to watch as this might be my favourite take on the Bat-Family in an adaptation as they all had great chemistry with each other.

Actually what you said about, Freeze may have been the intent at some point. Looking back at the flashback where he was in a car chase, you can see a photo strip of him and some woman most likely the series version of Nora. I can only assume the idea was dropped since it's never brought up in any episode featuring him.
@shivill2236
15 сағат бұрын
It was likely homage to the BTAS storyline; in the behind the scenes, they do explain their thought process behind their Mr. Freeze, and they describe it as "we didn't want to copy BTAS so we'll do our own thing," so it was more, so they wanted to be original.
@nightmarearcade2663
13 сағат бұрын
I can see it but personally I feel like the homage may have been a leftover from an early draft of the episode. Like I can understand them wanting to do an original version of the character but I can also see during the early days of production they were just gonna do another take on btas freeze before changing their minds. The photo strip being the last demands of that idea they didn't bother taking out. I agree with what you said but I just don't think they'd use the photo strip as a homage due to how much it implies in the show.

It just reaked of "To Sell Toys!" to fans, it didn't help that a lot of the character changes are questionable, like Joker seemingly slowly mutating into a hyena or Riddler looking like a heroin addict. Still the only thing I've actually seen of the show is the Vs. Vampire... Also I had enjoyed the penguin a bit more in this series and had enjoyed some of the one shot forgettable villains. Like Ragdoll. The main thing that really colored this series was it being made during the Bat Embargo. Essentially in an attempt to keep everything in order this show wasn't allowed to use characters or elements of the other Batman products. So no Robin until Teen Titans ended. No Batman movie villains. It did start to get lifted as that was why we had Gordon appear and we lost Batman's former police department ally. Still the restrictions and what they made from it was interesting.

Vampire I love this show, this was My Batman growing up, and I still love it rewatching it. It does great at separating itself from what came before and even did it's best to work around the Batman Embargo, or in simpler terms, certain characters weren't allowed to cross over in to other media revolving around the Batman. This show was coming out around the same time as the Dark Knight trilogy was starting so this shows wasn't allowed to use certain villains and characters, Two-Face, Ra's Al Ghul, Scarecrow, and even Jim Gordon wasn't introduced until the end of season 2 and the only character excluded from the embargo was Joker for obvious reasons, that lead way for Ethan filling the Harvey Dent void and to an extent Dracula filling in for Ra's, both were immortal beings that dive into the supernatural that act as a dark reflection for Batman and both even had similar hair styles, and the embargo is why we got Batgirl first before Robin since Teen Titans was still airing at the time

Actually the thing with Victor's backstory... it's actually very close to his ORIGINAL backstory. The Nora one from TAS was basicially invented in TAS. People loved it so much it became his defacto backstory from that point

My introduction to this show was through the Batman vs Dracula movie. While that film was way darker than anything in the show, I still loved how stylized the world of Gotham was, and I think Kevin Michael Richardson is a super underrated Joker. Might be my second favorite VA for the character behind Mark Hamill obviously.

This version might have my favorite design for Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, ManBat, and some others and I like the unconventional Joker in the straight jacket with the long floppy sleeves before they put him in the suit

Vampire! Seriously though, the movie was the first thing I saw for this adaptation and it made me realize I was missing out. I even used the movie to write my major essay in high school

Vampire. As for my opinion on Dracula's design from this DC Earth I suspect he was supposed to originally Ras Al Ghul based on his appearance if you gave him a darker complexion along with green clothing with gold accents see he the Demon's head.

Quips are every bit as valid as stoic silence. Both are about how, how much, and why you use them. Neither is inherently better or worse. And contrasting them can be delicious. Be it the chills when cracking jokes is replaced with a different cracking sound as our hero says not a word, the silent type getting worryingly chatty, or seeing two very different characters play off each other. Heck, one notable example within this show is in Robin's introduction. We can see Bats is getting more angry because of how close to home it hits. For me the thing with keeping Freeze villainous is the scale of danger he can bring with even a little prep time. Sure, Joker can be given time to pull off some heinous nonsense, but if you need an immediate city scale problem, there's only really 2 in the regular deck. Ivy and Freeze. So while BTAS Freeze has that human pathos, there is no contradiction in ethics for '03 Freeze to unleash his full power. He has no moral compass to interfere with freezing an entire city. With the Freeze who has humanity left to his cold heart, such actions make less sense. Further, it means you can't talk him down with how others suffering like his late love could yet be saved, or how many people will suffer his emotional pain if he presses the button. A bad man who became a monster doesn't care, providing a formidable foe. Personally, I think excluding Riddler is a disservice. Sure, the look is a bit much, but the writing, oh the writing! I've never seen a better written Riddler more convincing in both threat and intelligence. Heck, he only had like 3 spotlight episodes, but every time was golden. Sure, we enjoyed him fighting the original VAMPIRE. It has been done before and will be done again because it's just such a compelling high concept. But Nigma? All too often overlook or looked down on these days. An old staple of the Rogues' Gallery, and '03 put respect on his name and brain. VAMPIRE VAMPIRE VAMPIRE Well it took until the tail end of season 4 to introduce J'onn. So I didn't mind, and while Season 5 was definitely the crossover season, it felt fine and earned after 4 seasons focused on the bat family, and I would not have minded seeing these creators tackle Superman, since it felt like they properly got him and most of the other heroes... despite the lack of girls on the league. What I won't argue is that narratively, Yin was robbed. Heck, having a police side episode of Yin, cured Bennet and Gordon would have been great. And While her being shuffled offscreen did coincide with Batgirl, I'd argue it was more about Gordon since Bats didn't strictly need 2 points of contact with the police. But seeing her interact with Babs could have been fun. Which brings me to a point that you didn't cover, but I consider important. One of the allegations thrown at the feet of Batman as a character is child endangerment, and being a bad surrogate father. A claim that I feel this show refuted nicely. For starters, Batgirl is the first side kick, and that's her initiative that Bruce very much tried to shut down or keep away for her safety, but she wouldn't quit, so it was better to train her and bring her in the loop. Then when she's convinced him of the idea, and Greyson can't be kept in the dark about his adoptive father's after hours work, Bruce made sure his adopted son had the right training. And I would say I'm a diehard fan of the show. After getting through all of JL and JLU, this was my entry to Batman that was standalone.

Regarding the joker and what you said about the shows fighting, I really agree. I’ve had this long running joke that ra’s al ghul doesn’t know shit about fighting, because Batman is meant to be his greatest disciple and yet he has trouble with people like scarecrow, canonically a literal twig man, and joker, a guy who objectively would only have general street fight knowledge. Here they actively do show how he can be a challenge, first playing up the circus clown aspect and making his fighting style acrobatic as well as frantic/chaotic reflecting his mentality

Batman: The Animated Series is a masterpeace of animation and possibly the single best adaption of Batman ever made. The Batman is a fantastic animated series with great action and a lot of fun. There's room for both.
