Having done extensive research on that fight while living in Mt many years ago, it was an overwhelming sorry that I felt for those soldiers , some very young and some well decorated in war efforts who sadly lost their lives. The men and horses were exhausted from no rest for one thing . Custer was told “Don’t be greedy” he ignored his scouts, and Custer had been reprimanded earlier. Such a disastrous fight.

I agree. Looking at the past through modern eyes, not necessarily modern science, but modern standards or values or lifespans and conveniences (communications, transportation, medicine, automation, etc.) or modern ideas is ignorant.

That was a good talk Garrett. I did not know about your channel. I'm glad I found it. You are so right about not judging history through today's standards. If our children were taught history properly, I believe they could see it in a different perspective. But our kids would be lucky to be taught history in the first place. Be well friend. This Georgia boy would be proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with you Missouri boys.

I was visiting the battle field about 2005. Wonderful museum. Beautiful area. My deepest thoughts were walking the site and noticed the different spots where pockets of 2,3 and more soldiers fell. Especially sad was that several markers stood indicating that a individual soldier died alone. It was their time in life and our history. Right or wrong it happened
@louisavondart9178
10 ай бұрын
Poignant they may be but many of those markers are not where the men fell. That has been proven by battlefield archaeology but the markers were never moved to where the actual bones and artifacts were later found.

Custer and his troopers didn't make US Indian policy, they executed it. Their own feelings on that policy were immaterial, they had a job to do or they would have been Court-Martialed. Custer may have been impetuous and glory seeking, but he didn't ride into the LBH to commit suicide. And he didn't have good Intelligence on numbers of Warriors when this campaign started, the actual numbers were 3-4 times what the Military Intelligence estimated. Terrain was a big factor in Custer's loss and the Warriors win, ravines and coulees allowed the latter to close with Troopers while being at less risk to gunfire-negating the range advantage of the Springfield Trapdoor carbines. Interestingly enough, the 7th Cavalry had used Spencer Repeating Rifles in earlier engagements-but leadership determined on the open plains the longer range of the Springfields would be a big advantage-wrong assumption.

You mean The loser being the US Cavalry-- The stories of heroism, and fighting gallantly to the last man were never confirmed, and then there is Libby Custer's account--- All, or most of the accounts by the Sioux, and Cheyenne are still disregarded as untrue, or not factual, to this very day---

Where was general crook from one fort or the other fort general coming from the south ? They were not on the greasy grass .
@michaelayers3998

Custer was a day early in his attack, in violation of his orders. His “reasoning” was that he feared the Indians would escape the trap of the three converging columns. But in Custer’s defense (sort of), Crook had been attacked at the Rosebud (south of the LBH) and had retreated, so that the largest of the three columns was off the board and no immediate threat to the Indians-which made them less likely to flee Custer than they might otherwise have been. Crook was amazingly negligent in not attempting to inform the other two columns of his actions-but heaven only knows whether it would have deterred Custer from being so aggressive. The Gibbon/Terry column coming from the west arrived in the area on June 26, the day after the battle (per the agreed-upon plan). If he’d have waited until he could coordinate with them, the outcome could’ve been different.

Yes true and leaving Gatlin guns for they slow him down . He always won . Custer luck on the enemy had never seen bravery as this Man carried . Crook didn't have it that week . Benteen Reno & yes Grant were against him . He had just brought evidence in federal court against Grants historical crooked corrupt administration . Did Grant get any of this corrupt money . Evidently not . He sold his memiours to provide for his family at when he died . Election year . Audie was a Man's Man . His family caring military medals as Medal of Honor . Purple Heart . Custer family had many empty seats at the table June 26th . Cowardice never . Brazen to the teeth . I never will hear my self put down Custer name as Patton or Grant . You have a great post indeed sir . And I'm hoping I do get a chance to meet you one day soon over a good meal . Which is highly likely . I like showing up at the Greasy Grass often . I've only one National Park left to see and in opposite direction to Maine . Got within just miles and was called to work .

The Indians coming off the reservation I'm told we're dressed like towns people long brought up in debates and court system . Didn't know if they were enemy or not in crosshairs . Water was high that year . Grass was tall . It's late June in Montana . Peak of summer . Indians had better guns . And were getting very proficient at use . The Fort Fetterman wagon fight gave them many bullets . And Bravado to carry the day . Custer was doing exactly as he had done on the Washita in Kansas . Same tactic. His orders were very much to his discretion . And Sherman had always had his back . Told Abby Custer the Battle and Civil War was won mostly to her husband's taking many a field . 11 horses shot out from under him .

Now, I'm no expert on this matter. But have watched & listened! I think to sum this up it would be fair to say this; - The military did not have the proper intelligence as to thier enemies true strength or their abilities to "attack". - Custer was successful with traditional white man's warfare but not with "unconventional" warfare. Big mistake. Vietnam springs to mind here! - Custer "split" his force. He undermined his collective "strength". This action alone was the 7th's demise. Out gunned! Out arrowed! Out numbered! - The final nail in their coffins was that "hill". Exposed with no cover & to make matters worse the Indian's were able to approach the "scattered" force at a very close range before it was to "late"! Remember, the bodies were mainly "scattered" not bunched together like in the movies. This action was a running skirmish! Imagine a lone trooper standing in tall praire grass with Indians attacking him from 360 degrees! Impossible position to defend. 😱 This is war. No good guys. No bad guys. A "clash" of "culture's". But really, what a great "story"!!!!!!
@thomasfoss9963
5 ай бұрын
For not being an "expert" on this battle as many claim, you summed it up quite well!!!!! It was these reasons combined, thru a series of events, that led to the 7th's demise--- All of those factors were choices that Custer made that day--- I might add, it was also Custer's ego, and bravado that also played a large role-- He was hailed as a hero "Back East", in the papers, etc, and I feel he wanted to maintain that image in his quest for glory that led to his order's to attack the tribes, and to, "Whip those renegades"--- He was warned by his Crow scouts how large the villages were, and he either failed to recognize that, or completely ignored that fact----

It’s hard to imagine the fear those troopers felt as they realized help was not coming, their ammo was running out and they could see their comrades being butchered without mercy when they attempted to surrender…

However, Nobody actually knows if any of the men attempted to surrender-- That is pure conjecture, with no basis of facts--- People have been taught a skewed history for generations now that they fought gallantly to the last man-----
