August 27, 1776: New York, NY - In the early hours of the morning, George Washington, the American Commander-in-Chief, receives word that his forces stationed on Long Island have come under British attack. Washington hurries to cross over to Brooklyn from his residence in Manhattan to take command of his severely undersized and undertrained force.
While tensions between the British Empire and the American Colonies had boiled over into bloodshed at the battles of Lexington and Concord, it was the year-long Siege of Boston that gave hope to the colonists that driving out the British, an undertaking that would not come easy, was even possible.
By preventing the British from advancing beyond Boston, the militiamen and citizens all celebrated a triumphant victory on March 17th, when a large fleet of His Majesty’s Ships left Boston harbor and headed north to Nova Scotia.
Washington knew there was little cause for celebration, as the British Empire would return, and when they did so they would bring the full might of the empire on which the sun nevers with them. He anticipated their point of attack would be New York City; with its many waterways, harbors, and rivers. It would be the perfect staging ground for the naval superiority of the British, and nearly impossible for the Americans to defend without having command of the surrounding sea.
Over the next several months, Washington prepared as best he could for this coming invasion. Then in late June the sight of hundreds of British ships would grip the city with an unnerving sense of impending doom. Except for the many loyalists’ who sought to undermine the newly independent American’s with every chance they got.
Now Washington would face his greatest test as the stage was set for the largest land battle in the history of the continent to date, and the largest that would occur during the entirety of the Revolutionary War with over 40,000 men set to take their up arms.
General George Washington knew his odds of winning the battle were small, but his ultimate task was finding a way to not lose the war through resounding, and crippling defeat. The Americans will have their resolve tested through ferocious combat, and must find a way to keep their dream of independence alive in the face of overwhelming odds….
