I am a German/Bavarian decent, I have feelings for the HMS Hood sinking. Just 3 survived out of 1,315 brave men in under 10 minutes of battle. Then it was the notorious Bismarck turn to go to the bottom of the sea. Out of 2,200 ➕ men hundreds of brave Germans were captured by the British Navy.

+Steven Baer. Those 1,312 who perished with the _Hood_ very probably died within a few minutes when the ship exploded. No more could be rescued, not by the British or the Germans. It was tragic, but at least the _Hood_ and the _Bismarck_ fought a clean, honest fight.

Because KM Bismarck sank the Hood. H.M.S. Hood was world famous. She carried the flag of the empire on several world tours. People all over the world remembered walking her decks as visitors. When the Bismarck broke into the Atlantic, she was already well know, simply because of the risk she posed. Her epic fight with the Hood and Prince of Wales, and the stunning destruction of the Hood, made Bismarck as famous as the Hood. One cannot utter the name of one without thinking of the other.

KreigsMarine2 My dad was in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He spent two years on a destroyer in the Atlantic and two years on a PT Boat in the Pacific. He had a love for the Gras Spee. I probably didn't spell that right. I think he respected Langsdorff for saving his men and also British sailors because although the Admiral was damaged it could have done a lot of damage to the British ships. The red sea line really made the pocket battle ship. I have a friend his grandfather was a survivor of the Bismarck. He spent the rest of the war in a British Prison camp. He said the Brown Shirts cane to his parents house and said he was at fighting age. People have to understand most of the men didn't have a choice. Brown Shirts had the guns.

Unfortunately our dad wanted to put them together but never got around to it. Eventually they 'disappeared' somehow. That's what happens when you have an older brother that is such a neat freak. No mention of the cruiser Suffolk which trailed Bismarck through the night after she sank Hood. Prince Of Wales still had civilian engineers on board, having never fired a shot in anger, nor was the crew fully trained. Finally, Rodney was critically low on fuel, & ordered the cruiser Dorsetshire to finish off Bismarck with torpedoes, to which she was vulnerable with light under water armour. Rodney ran out of fuel before reaching port, & had to be towed in by destroyers. Bismarcks total crew casualties were similar to Hoods losses.

Germany defied the Washington treaty building Bismarck& Tirpitz, plus the so called pocket battle cruisers (ie Graf Spee) to far bigger tonnages than allowed. This is why Bismarck & Tirpitz were bigger & better than any other battleships at the time.Tirpitz was an even greater tonnage than Bismark.Hood was not a battle ship, but a battle cruiser, with thin decks for speed to sink enemy light cruisers marauding British shipping, & should not have even faced Bismarck, but the RN. had no choice.

Ok, time for you to learn a bit more. Each of the 3 Battlecruiser lost at Jutland was caused by rounds entering turrets and exploding causing flashback. The fact that propellant was where it should not have been did not help, but there were flaws in the turret supply as well which allowed the flash down the hoists. Also the quality of turret armour was at question.....

The music when she sinks is "Ich hatte ein kamarade", a song of paratroopers and SS infantry, not Kriegsmarine. Not realy a good choice. This song is now a classic of paratroopers "J'avais un camarade". It has lost the SS sens after the war when a lot of german no nazis soldiers were enlisted in the Foreign Legion in Indo and others units. If I remember, like most of military songs, music is from the 18 ème century and the text evolves with time. Except of course "Le Boudin", which is an hymn. The fact soldiers sing is a way to give the rythm of walking, because now we have no music band when we walk. Except me, the others prefered I shut up. Why ??? 😘

regarding main aim of a battlecruiser, Armoured cruisers were only one of its prey. The actual specified aim of a battlecruiser was the ability to fire on cruisers from beyond the range of said cruiser. At the Falklands, there was no scouting or having to find. The Admiralty knew that Spee would have to visit the Islands and sent their fastest units. The fact that Spee turned up the morning after Sturdee arrived showed how close it was. Any unit other than a fast BC would not ...cont

The early battlecrusier was a disaster waiting to happen, invincible was designed as a answer to the japanese Tsukuba and Ikoma and the italians Regina Elena class. The british invincible was designed from the outset to have the speed of a cruiser and the fire power of a capital ship, but the design had far too little protection especially on the decks and around magazines, which is the scarifice you have to make, considering the amount of displacement in machinery to get the ship up to 26kts .

The mightiest battleship afloat was located by a Catalina patrol plane, and then disabled and rendered a sitting duck, by a bloody biplane! @@corrigenda70 Shot by 14 inch guns from the Prince of Wales damaged the Bismarck in two the bow which damaged fuel tanks and in an auxiliary boiler room (the shell hit the water and then hit the Bismarck under the water line below its armor belt). The first hit limited Bismarck's operating range as it lost fuel. The second caused flooding that took two boilers out of commision - reducing Bismarck's speed. @ Max Wagner Sorry for the delay in responding but I have just seen the clip and your reply. The Catalinas used to trace Bismarck were not American but RAF Coastal Command aircraft. On 26 May 1941 at 0345 aircraft Z (Flying Officer Dennis Briggs) from 209 Squadron Costal Command took off from Loch Erne. Briggs reached his assigned search area at 0945 and began to fly a crossover search pattern. Around 1000 Briggs climbed out of his seat and co-pilot (US Navy Ensign Leonard B. ‘Tuck’ Smith) took over the controls. At 1010, Smith saw something. It was eight miles away off to port and at the very limit of his visibility. Briggs reported his encounter with Bismarck: ‘One battleship bearing 240° five miles, course 150°, my position 49° 33’ north, 21° 47’ west. Time of origin, 1030/26.’ A second Catalina, aircraft M of 240 Squadron (US Navy Lieutenant (j.g.) J. E. Johnson) joined him and both aircraft tried in vain to locate the battleship. The US Navy personnel were on training assignment with the RAF for the new (to the RAF) Catalinas. So it was a good effort all round.

Carriers have a strong class Illastries 114mm booking a flight deck and hangar, but it had to be cut for the air group of up to 36 aircraft, while the Ark Royal had 72 aircraft.
