I launched my 14 foot Sea King aluminum boat last week with a 25 Horse Merc after watching your video. I never launched in rough salt water, but I made sure to come prepared. I rode from the North to the South shore of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was about 4 in the afternoon so the waves and swells were rough and gigantic to what I’m used to. It was intimidating but lots of fun. The Merc 25 would send us flying but the waves told us no 😂. We were pretty much soaked afterwards not being able to find a clean way over the waves. Just wished there would be a fountain to rinse my motor.

I would say you were lucky after going on bay area waters for over 30 years I cannot understand why people don't understand the importance of wetsuits when the water temperature is 56 degrees if you go over you have at best 5 minutes before severe hypothermia sets in. Be smart get proper gear and protect yourself, sunscreen won't save your life but a wetsuit might.
@OffTheHookFishing

I would agree with you for the most part, but it will definitely take longer than 5 min - probably closer to a few hours. I, personally, have swam in colder water and both of us are experience swimmers. Appreciate the warning though!

@@OffTheHookFishing it's not the hypothermia so much, rather the "cold shock" you experience in about 5 minutes that will cloud your judgement. Regardless, besides a good wet suit, everyone should wear a good pad AND carry a VHF radio. And learn how to use it. If anyone gets in trouble, coast guard will be there in 10 minutes MAX, since Foet Baker is their backyard.

I launched my 18 ft klamath here and my truck got stuck in the gravel. So I wouldn’t recommend launching here with bigger boats
@magnetman007
2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. I launch my kayak here many times and have seen numerous cars get stuck in the gravel. Its deeper than you would guess since it is a free public ramp and one would expect it to be maintained but it is not the case. Use the paved launch if you're back up w/ a car. Someone should post a sign to keep cars off the gravel launch.

Porta bote sinks easily in heavy waves. It stay on top of water, but you might lose stuff and stay in water to get rescued.
@gofisherman2016

That was dangerous, You should put on a wet suit. If you fallen into the water, without wet suit you can only survive for 15-20 minutes, with a wet suit you can stay alive for 2 hours.

not actually true. Maybe just sitting there someone would last a 20 minutes, but swimming around, you got an easy 1-2 hours. The SF bay is about 59F, and I have seen lots of people swimming around in it.

Ricky my boy, yes i must admit a more apt title might be the bay's best boat ramp for small boats. I think any boat under 15' would be 100% fine here if you're ok getting your toes wet. Plus it's still free, has ample parking, and is one of the bay's most scenic launches. And do not underestimate the porta bote. I have been out in HMB, tomales, sf bay, bodega, and lake tahoe. Moreso, I have been out in 3 small craft advisories now and its not just because im an idiot. It is a real boat - more stable than any ocean kayak and quite frankly most other boats its size (12 foot). The only real risk here was taking a couple splashes. I think ive proven the seaworthiness of my the boat in a few videos now.

Does the outboard motor fit in your trunk? I am thinking about getting a portabote but I don't know how it will fit in my bmw.
@OffTheHookFishing
3 жыл бұрын
yep! I have the little 2hp from honda which is only about 30-40 lbs. I dont even need to put the back seats down. If you want to see how I store everything in the car, watch the first min of my first video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qW-VmpeXcWimgXY. I will try and make an overview of how i store and transport the boat in the future. If your car is like mine though, the seats don't fit very well with all my fishing gear, motor, and cooler, so I opted for a rooftop cargo bag (in desc). I do plan on upgrading to a larger motor eventually, but I predict most short-shaft outboards will fit fine in the trunk - just remember to put down a tarp so you dont get water everywhere. Hope you join the bmw+porta bote crew! might just be me right now, haha

How do you find the best times where the water is calmest ? Like is there a way to tell by looking at tide info
@OffTheHookFishing
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Marco! Im planning to make a quick video about this soon, but there is a ton of things you can look at to give you a better idea of how the water will be. For tides, typically a smaller change between high tide and low tide will be calmer, since there is less water that needs moved. I also look at the weather report and see if there are any small craft advisories and wind speed. Typically wind over 10 mph starts to get more rough, I try to avoid anything over 15 mph. An app called 'Windy' is super helpful. Arguably the most important aspect is going to be swell height and interval. Swell height is the height of the wave and the interval is how far apart they are in seconds. Lower swells and longer intervals are preferred. Every app I have used gives different swell heights for some reason, so just pick one and stick with it. Lastly, my secret weapon is live cams. There are a couple on KZitem that are essention for bay area fishing: Pacifica Pier and The Ritz Carlton at HMB. I also check out Sam's Chowder House and the Boardsports California San Mateo and Alameda picture cams. Nothing is better than live video! I hope this helps - ocean conditions in CA have not been great recently, so be safe!

How big were the swells and rough waters?
@OffTheHookFishing
3 жыл бұрын
The bay doesn't really get swells, more like chop. I'd say the rough water only had waves 1-2 feet high, but as you could probably tell, they were at 2-3 second intervals - making it really rough for small crafts.

You can't keep Dungeness crab in the bay, only outside the golden gate. You can target rock crab, but I didn't have crab traps at this point, so it wasn't an option. Thanks for watching!
