This is the sound of a man going through extremely dark times. It's amazing Brian is still alive, and thank God for that. Don't know where I'd be if not for his music. I'm so happy he exists.

Quite possibly the most heartbreaking song I've ever heard. The fact that Brian made it out after everything is a testament to the human spirit.

@@JW-hn9ck You're thinking of "Oh Lord", however, you're partially right. This song was reworked into "It's Just A Matter of Time" from The Beach Boys (1985).

This is the sound of someone so deep in darkness. Lying to others but more importantly to himself about how separated from feeling good he actually is. Such tragedy

Well it is, had he had been truly fine you would never have heard this soul feeling song. I miss this group so much. But, we have to move on. That's life. To the younger generation who may stumble upon the Beach Boys music , Enjoy!

Listening to this song, especially when combined with the knowledge of the context of brian and dennis in '82 and these sessions, is one of the most heart-wrenching things I have ever experienced.

@@Cuauhtli021 Good question. The whole story of the beach boys and what they went through is very very complex and also very tragic, and I'm not gonna try to go through it all in this comment - but to go over the general gist of what I'm talking about regarding the cocaine sessions specifically, it's a very powerfully sad story because Brian and Dennis were both in a very bad place in life at this time, both having strong substance abuse issues and major life issues, and what makes that even more sad is the fact that Dennis died only a year after these sessions happened. Some more important context to this is that Brian, who was the main creative genius behind the most acclaimed beach boys albums, was making increasingly experimental music in 1966-1967, but its experimental nature was starting to become off-putting to his bandmates, which led to the tragic cancellation of a big beach boys album. Dennis was the only other member of the band who really appreciated and encouraged Brian's talent, which is exactly why the cocaine sessions happened in the first place - he was trying to get brian to make more music. The cocaine sessions represent brian and the one other beach boy who really had his back laying their souls on the line in music form once again, despite their very rough life situations and Dennis' impending death.

If you're asking why he never picked it back up, well, he probably didn't want to ever be reminded of where he was at this point in his life. But if you're asking about why he recorded it in such low quality, these sessions were conducted with a simple tape recorder and nothing more.
