This is lovely. Carl can, of course, make anything sound spectacular..... as a Stephen Stills fan, I can honestly say I LOVE THIS VERSION. I wish they’d kept it in their repertoire.

I am watching “The Beach Boys: An American Band” on Amazon Prime, and this cut came on, evidently from a show in England. I had no idea BB did covers, but there you go. I couldn’t figure out the tune from the video, but I could hear Stills singing it, so I tracked it down. Great tune…I wish the BB audio video had been better, but, a snapshot in time.

Around 1968 the Beach Boys were (according to others youtubers who attended) touring as the headliner with The Buffalo Springfield and the Strawberry Alarm Clock who performed before the Beach Boys. According to one youtuber who attended, the Beach Boys spoke to the audience about their admiration of the Buffalo Springfield (who, according to the person present, had been booed by the audience during their performance!).

I remember seeing this clip on a Beach Boys doc, and always wondered what this song was, because it was the most beautiful post-Pet Sounds song I'd ever heard! At first, I thought it was called "Georgia No"--sort of akin to "Caroline No", and then I did some research and discovered it was actually a Buffalo Springfield song called "Rock And Roll Woman". Anyway, Carl's vocal far surpasses Stephen Stills

Both of those questions are actually quite tricky to honestly answer. I have no idea how one would find out who tailored his clothing or where he bought his clothes or here the inspiration for his dancing came from, which is fair enough: For instance, if I was asked, I honestly wouldn't be able to remember where I first got my own dancing style from. I think most people wouldn't know, unless they have deliberately learnt about a specific style of dance and gone to lessons or even a dance school. It's probably a combination of the various influences that we all get as we learn about movement and what makes us individually comfortable with our physical expressions of joy (which is what dancing is, I reckon) :-)

there is no way they only played it a couple times - it sounds way too polished on stage (especially compared to a lot of what they were playing in '68) - I wonder if Carl ever tinkered around with doing a cover in the studio....
this must be 1969 - if they played it live in 1968 ... I was hoping it would be in the big dump of live shows they released ...or maybe they don't have a complete version of this either?
@NOWtheband
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's from 1968. I think the "Beach Boys On Tour: 1968" only covers the concerts that were multi-track recorded and perhaps this particular concert was only recorded via film audio methods (which aren't as good quality as multi-track methods) or maybe the audio recording has since been lost and all that is left is the film audio which wouldn't be as good or or maybe they couldn't get the rights to release it from Stephen Stills or the Buffalo Springfield management or label or perhaps, as you wrote, there's no complete version available. Otherwise, yes I think they would have included it in The Beach Boys On Tour: 1968 album. :-)

You're right. He really was a good looking man. The youngest of the Beach Boys, he exuded the youthful themes in their music. But two years later, he grew a beard which he would have for the rest of his life. It made him look older and more solemn. Yes, I know it was his choice, not mine. Yes, I get it. Just saying I just liked the appearance he had pre beard.

It's fairly well documented that Dennis sadly had a pretty substantial drug/alcohol problem for many years prior to his accidental death by drowning...probably seriously affected his meter - he was a good drummer but putting all that crap in your body can definitely affect thought processes/motor skills....such a bummer to lose him so young...
@russallert

Dennis was a good drummer (and I've played drums for 44 years, so I think I know which ones are good) - maybe he wasn't Hal Blaine, but then nobody else is either. He was self-taught and had an unconventional ambidextrous style of playing, so like anyone else he had his strengths and weaknesses. But he was an overall musical person like his brothers, sang both lead and harmony vocals, wrote songs and played keyboards as well as drums. Check out live clips of The Beach Boys on Ready Steady Go from 1964 - Dennis was pretty solid.

Dennis was ultimately a better keyboardist than drummer... and evolved into the group's second best songwriter. Too bad they chose to put a lot of inferior tunes on their '70s albums over his.
