Jesus!!! Brian really was a genius. And that's coming from a young black brother from the Westside of Detroit. Where you'd least expect to hear Beach Boy music. This is incredible. No other words.

@@jdingledine This brought tears to my eyes. Especially when I found out he was contemplating suicide, but instead of following through, he wrote this. He expressed I think how most of us feel. Small!!! I mean really small. It's a big world out there and it seems nobody gives a damn about our cries. No President, no governor, no mayor, no alderman. We're alone!!!

After the sudden death of my brother, my best friend, this composition saved me, too - from the madness of grief and premature endlessness. There is an ethereal quality about this mix, as if it was touched by greater glory and eternity. How did Brian Wilson accomplish it? How did he take all of our collective pain and sorrow and create the feeling of hope and comfort? He's a genius, blessed with a most brilliant gift and a loving, compassionate heart. Thank you Brian Wilson and Steve Desper. Thank you, too, Jaime Dingledine, for posting this. REPLY

I agree and am sorry for your loss, which sounds meaningless I know, but that is what is expected to be said. That aside, I feel exactly what you felt here. I heard this song live in 2004, performed with the same emotion and passion. Take care.

"I lost myself in the balance of darkness that stretched beyond the breaking waves to the other side of the earth. The ocean was so incredibly vast, the universe was so large, and suddenly I saw myself in proportion to that........ The next day I began writing "' 'Til I Die ", perhaps the most personal song I ever wrote for The Beach Boys... In doing so, I wanted to re-create the swell of emotions that I'd felt at the beach the previous night." - Brian Wilson

i had a sudden death of a brother also. Trust me, I took it hard.I was lost for quite a while. He was in the music industry, God bless him, I wasnt ready, he wasnt ready. I am very sorry for your loss.I am reading this 2 years later but it will always be a part of your history (and mine) . This song makes me feel like there is a chance for me to start over after so long, Brian is a good person and a genius and some people never realize how much they help others. I wish I could use my genius, we all have some. God bless you I hope you find your heart filled with love

As great as the album version is, I love this remix. Those keyboards at the beginning are killer, followed by the organ. Really sets the mood even more so than the official version.

This mix was done by the great Steve Desper-long time engineer for the BB's. It was done during the recording phase of the Surf's Up album and I think Desper was just playing around a little to come up with something different. Most mixes on youtube are just versions of this one. I disagree that it's a really bad mix-I find it quite powerful. Cheers.

@@bent2 I think Aaron may be referring to the legendary 'Til I Die demo, which supposedly has more verses. It is on a Warner Bros. in-house CD set with proposed bonus tracks for the Warner Bros. BB album CD re-releases many years ago, and a copy was found at a San Fernando Valley record store a few years ago. Only a few people have heard the set (I'm not one of them) and it had many other gems on it that the BB archivists had not even known about. An extended "Slip On Through" , "Old Movie" (early version of Cuddle Up) and more. The person who found it discussed it on a BB message board but didn't want to share the tracks for fear of legal repercussions, understandable.

Liking my timing/your timing? For some reason I've been revisiting the BBs for the last week or so. Been in the mood to listen to this song for a few days; my own albums aren't organized after a move. Anyway, to finally hear it - and this version - is very nice. I'd also like to comment, for those who feel this mix's magic, that I get a similar feeling from a lot of mid-period Fleetwood Mac (between Peter Green & Buckingham/Nicks), along with the band Spirit. Thanks!
